Lyra's POV
“Didn't my son inform you already?”
Then her gaze roamed on me like I'm a piece of trash. “He's getting married to a responsible woman, a woman of calibre and class, a woman of standards.”
“And obviously,” then she pulled my chin up. “You're not that woman, you're nothing but a pauper and you don't have a place in this house anymore!” her tone carries a finality that's hard for me to come to terms with.
My body began to vibrate and my heart shook at those poisonous words. Is she suddenly blind? Why's she not asking the reason why my belly is low? Or is it what I'm thinking? Was it her plan too? Numerous questions oozed through my mind.
“Come in,” was the next words I heard, as to who she was expecting was what I couldn't predict. That shithead is getting married to that whore he's cheating on me with, even when we're not yet properly divorced.
“Where's the lawyer? I thought he was the one to come with it,” my mother in law added, making nervous prickles run down my spine. This is not a joke after all.
As I rotated my head to glance at the person she's referring to, the burning sensation in my lung increased and the rage piling up in me exploded instantly. I didn't know how my hand got to her face and I landed the hottest slap on it.
“What the fuck! How dare you lay your filthy hands on my son's secretary!” She yelled at me nonchalantly, without a care in the world about my reasons.
“What the hell did you put in the wine you sent down to me?!” She was quiet, but the guilt on her face was suffocating me.
“Get your freaking stinking hands off her!” My mother in law said, and pushed me away from the bitch.
“What is she talking about?” She asked her.
“I don't know what she's talking about ma'am, I only followed an instruction I was given by my boss,” she responded, but her reply conflicted with the guilt she was wearing on her face.
For a moment, I thought I was getting some strength, but I was wrong. Fresh tears gathered in my eyes when I pondered on the fact that I might be attacking an innocent soul. Maybe, she has no hand in it just like she proclaims.
But anyone who did this, should wait for me, because he or she will pay with their life. Who the hell is that homewrecker? I know she knows something about this.
My mother in law took a critical look at me, then her mouth fell open for a while, the surprise on her face was unexplainable. “What…what happened to the pregnancy?” The first time she spoke in a low tone since I arrived there. She doesn't stay with us often, just for visits and I could remember she wasn't here yesterday.
I didn't think she deserves any explanation from me at all. She doesn't! I pulled the documents from the secretary's hand, because I knew that was the divorce papers.
When I caught a glimpse of the document with Caleb's signature already glaring at me, my chest tightened and I blinked at my mother-in -law's face as she fiddled with her phone. I knew she was calling her son.
I parted my lips to speak but my voice betrayed me and the teardrop I was holding suddenly poured down. “Sign it, you deserve better!” It was as if someone spoke those words into my ears.
Out of nowhere, I gathered all the strength in me and scribbled my signature boldly on the documents.
“Oh my goodness! I should have known you're nothing but a whore! You have been cheating on my son all these years.”
Wait a minute, is that what Caleb told her? It clearly insinuates that he's aware that I lost my baby.
“That baby was a bastard. What's the point of bleeding because you lost it? It's supposed to be good news,” she added.
My hands clenched into a fist as my teary eyes fell on her face. I can't remember telling him about this. How on earth did he know?
“Is that all you have to say after your first grandchild has been allegedly murdered just like that?” My voice cracked and my body vibrated.
“That bastard can't be my grandchild,” she replied nonchalantly.
I felt like the ground should open up and swallow me as her words hit me like poison.
“And we have proof, Lyra. Your evil plans have been shattered, go back to the street where you belong!” she added.
“What!” I yelled, as my eyes choked with tears. So they all have a hand in this? How? The remaining tears streamed down my face.
Then I took a few devastating strolls towards her, “You killed my baby intentionally, huh? You all,” I blinked my eyes trying so hard not to lose it all.
“Trust me, it's not over yet!” My breath quickened all of a sudden.
“I don't know what you're talking about Lyra. Your bastard child wasn't meant to see this world after all,” she said, with a brief laugh.
What a fuck! I tried to utter another word but it was as if there was a lump in my throat.
Suddenly, we heard the sound of the door bell. Well, at that moment, I didn't want to spend another second there any longer.
When I swung the door open, there were three police officers at the door. And the next thing I heard was, “Miss Lyra, you're under arrest! And you must go to the station with us now!”
My eyes opened wide in shock as I couldn't think straight anymore, “what?! For what reasons? I mean…,” my throat became dry immediately.
I gasped in disbelief as one of them took out handcuffs. My entire body started trembling and shaking. “I'm innocent of whatever accusations they might have labeled on me, officers!” I yelled loudly, expecting someone to show up but no one did.
“You will prove yourself when we get there,” he said, and handcuffed me without blinking an eyelid.
“Mrs Sawyer! Mrs Sawyer!” I shouted, my mother in law's name, or rather my ex-mother in law's name, but all to no avail.
As I was dragged to the gate, I was shocked to the core, when the doctor who offered to bring me home was not gone yet.
“What's her offense? And why is she being treated like a thief?” At that second, my breath was caught up in my throat and my body seemed to shrink.
“She's more than a thief, Sir,” one of them replied nonchalantly, making cold shivers run down my spine.
“What the hell do you mean by that!” I asked in a shaky and broken tone.
Meanwhile, my mind mimicked the officer's words when the van took off and tears trickled down my face while my teeth chattered.
It's been almost four freaking years since I was released from prison when I was allegedly accused of murdering my own father. As my mind raced, I didn't know how fresh tears flowed down on my face again.
I was already made aware that if they discover anything fishy about the evidence used against me, I will be kept behind bars for the second time.
I mean, I know no one will ever believe I'm innocent and all the evidence used against me was fake.
Obviously not, because of the circumstances surrounding the demise of my father.
Even the blind could detect how empty and broken I am now, probably that's the reason for this unannounced arrest.
Lyra's POV “You should be thanking your stars that I added ‘Miss’ to your fucking name because you don't even deserve it!”Then I eyed her up and down covetously. “Ooh! What were you thinking? You think you have had your way; come on, wake up, Selina and stop dreaming!”I drew back my head from her and I broke into a great peal of laughter that echoed in the entire corridor.Gary might have waited for me all this while and tired by now but I have to put this useless woman in her place before anything else.“I…how dare you Lyra?! What the hell are you even talking about? You know absolutely nothing about that the crap you're spilling and I'm not in for your silly games here!” Her voice cracked, and the guilt in her eyes were so evident that even the blink could notice. As her voice faded, I brought my hand up to stifle the giggle that had risen in my throat, but I felt it was impossible, and I broke into another loud laugh.I folded my arms and my eyes swept over her just staring at h
Lyra's POV “What!” I screamed, and my ears were as though I was just dreaming about his words as they seemed too scary to be true.“I understand that look, and it's hard to even believe it, and as it stands now, even though I need a presenter, he doesn't know I'm out of prison and doesn't watch the news. That's one thing about him that I'm so much aware of,” he managed to say and I still stared at him wordless. Then I tiptoed back to my seat and my eyes couldn't leave his face. It was as though I was anxiously searching his face to figure out his thoughts, which was obviously impossible. The moment I landed on my chair, he reached for my hand and murmured some words on his lips as we stared at each other without a word for a while.“I understand how badly you feel and so shattered down to earth. How the people you love most turn out to be more than enemies, and the only thing they can think of as a payment for your sacrifices towards them is pain, hurt and betrayal!”“It's so heartbr
Lyra's POV My eyes widened in astonishment, and I was amazed at the thrill his words gave me. I raised my eyelids, and my eyes met his glaring ones as the shock ran through me.“Yeah, I know you're confused, Lyra, but I'm the same person you knew back in the prison house,” he spoke as he nodded his head.“Really?!” I covered my mouth as I was barely able to control my grasp of surprise. As I voiced that, he nodded his head and stretched his hand towards my tensed ones, which were lying on my desk.“I don't know my real name, and I guess that caused the confusion, right? You don't have to worry about anything, Lyra, I'm with you on this mission, and there's nothing for you to be bothered about,” he revealed.“I know it has been hard for you all this while, and take my word if I tell you that you will get the justice you deserve,” he continued, and my eyes swept all over him.I cleared his throat, and he loosened his tie a bit as I relaxed on the swivel chair. “A lot is going through y
Lyra's POV I pulled the phone from my ears instantly and my eyes widened in astonishment. I stood there, blank and shaken.I parted my lips, but my voice broke miserably, and I was too surprised to accept his handshake. His hand remained in the air as he searched anxiously on my face as though he was trying to read what I had in mind.Is he really Tate Shark? Or am I hallucinating?I surveyed his face and the same fragments of images clouded my mind. There's nothing that seems to make me doubt what's going on in my mind.“You…you are? Tate Shark?” My voice cracked and I released my handbag to Sandra.“He was here for a while now ma'am,” she said as she stretched her hand for the bag.He nodded eagerly with a brief smile on his lips. “Yeah Miss Jenkins, it's a pleasure to be here,” his husky voice made my body tremble all of a sudden.I only stared speechless, as though I was deaf or dumb, and I couldn't help but wonder how this man who was released from prison was a news presenter.W
Lyra's POV Her eyes moved upwards to stare at my glaring ones and she surveyed me keenly. They were a pool of pity in them but behind that, the only thing I perceived was that evil old lady who stood against me in court years ago without a fucking care about anything.“I want to make it right now and stand by you through everything. I…,” she paused and stole a look at my red face.“I know I disappointed you Lyra. But I want to be the shoulder that you would lean on now on your hard days and the one that you will rejoice with on your happy days. I…,” she muttered under her breath and her voice was broken all of a sudden.I pulled the handbag from her cursed hands and my eyes flickered over her. “It's good you know that you disappointed me, and for your information, Mrs Jenkins. I don't know, you don't even deserve to be referred to as that.”“Guess what? It's too late for that now. A shoulder for me to lean on? Really?” I stood still as I tried to fight back the tears that had threate
Lyra's POV “You…but Marc,” she stammered and her eyes frantically went back and forth on us.“Yeah, I didn't tell her about it because I wanted to surprise the both of you,” Marc replied eagerly and upon all indications, they had been in touch with each other.“Miss Jenkins, I thought it wise to schedule a meeting with you and grandma. Since you returned you have not asked about her and know why. But…”I dropped my handbag on the couch near her and I interrupted him vehemently. “Who the hell gave you that advice? Wait…oh God!” My voice cracked and I ran my hand through my long hair.“What even makes you think that I want to see this? This one? She's not my grandma anymore and will never be!” My voice was almost cold.I swallowed the lump that rose in my throat, and I stared at them with my eyes full of fury while she lowered her gaze to the floor. She picked up her support crutch, and tried to sit upright. I couldn't imagine that just in less than five years of being away she's now t
