No one breathed. Kael pushed me behind him without a word, his hand still locked around my wrist like he thought I might bolt, and honestly, some part of me wanted to. Rowan had already pulled a knife from beneath his jacket, the blade catching the thin light bleeding through a window near the ceiling, the only source of illumination left in the room.

Another knock.

"Kael," Silas called, almost bored now, like he had all the time in the world.  "Don't make this difficult."

"You have ten seconds to leave," Kael said, and Silas only laughed from the other side of the door, low and amused

"You know I never listen."

The first hit shook the metal door hard enough to rattle the hinges, and I stumbled back a step despite myself, my shoulder colliding with a supply cabinet. The second hit was worse, the overhead shelves trembling until a tray of surgical tools crashed to the floor, scalpels and forceps scattering across the concrete with a sound like breaking glass.

"Is he trying to break in?" I asked, pulse hammering so hard I could feel it in my throat.

"No," Rowan said, without turning around, his whole body angled toward the door like a coiled spring, and a third hit landed. "He already has."

Before I understood what he meant, glass exploded behind us, the tiny window  near the ceiling bursting inward in a shower of glittering shards, and a dark shape slipped through before they even hit the ground. Then another. Then a third, all of them moving with a speed that no human body should have been capable of.

"Wolves!" Rowan shouted, and everything happened at once, the room dissolving into motion too fast to track.

One came straight at me, teeth bared but Kael moved faster than I could follow, faster than seemed possible for someone his size, catching the attacker by the throat  mid-lunge and slamming him into the wall hard enough to crack the concrete behind him. Another lunged for Rowan, who met him halfway, the flash of a blade catching what little light there was, and the attacker hit the ground with a cry that echoed off the walls.

I backed toward the supply cabinet, heart in my throat, understanding for the first time that this wasn't a fight club anymore, this wasn't stitches and bruised knuckles and men who'd taken a hit too hard. This was an attack, and I was standing in the middle of it with nothing but a scalpel and a metal tray between me and whatever these men wanted.

A fourth man was already climbing through the shattered window, eyes locking on me the second his boots hit the floor.

"There she is."

I grabbed the first thing my hand found, a metal tray still slick with Marcus's blood from earlier, and swung it into the side of his face with everything I had. He staggered, more startled than hurt, blinking at me like he couldn't quite believe what had just happened.

"Seriously?" he muttered, rubbing his jaw.

"I was aiming for your nose," I snapped, reaching behind me for the scalpel on the counter, my fingers closing around the handle with a steadiness that surprised even me. "If you come any closer, I'll use this. I've done stitches all night. I know exactly where to cut, and I know exactly how much it'll hurt".

His smile faltered for half a second, but he rushed me anyway, and I slashed without thinking, muscle memory taking over where fear should have paralyzed me. The blade catching his forearm, and he hissed and stumbled back, blood welling dark against his skin, and for one strange, suspended second I just stared at my own hand, stunned that I'd actually cut him, that I'd actually fought back instead of freezing.

"Mira!" Kael shouted from across the room, and I barely had time to answer before another attacker crashed into him, sending them both into a rack of shelves that toppled with a deafening crash.

"I'm fine!" I yelled back, and it was mostly true.

The clinic had turned to complete chaos, broken glass and blood and growling filling every corner of the room, and then, all at once, every wolf in it went perfectly still, like someone had hit pause on the entire fight.

A scent bloomed in the air, sweet, almost like jasmine after rain, cutting clean through the copper and sweat, and the attackers' eyes went wide with something closer to shock than anger, something closer to fear.

"No," one of them whispered, backing toward the broken window. "It can't be."

"Her scent," another breathed, and Kael's expression changed instantly, all the fury draining out of his face and leaving something else behind. For the first time since I'd met him, he looked afraid.

"Rowan," he said quietly, not taking his eyes  "We're leaving."

"What about"

"Now."

The attackers retreated all at once, not because they were losing, not because Kael and Rowan had beaten them back, but because something had shifted in the room, something bigger than the fight itself , and the man I'd cut looked back at me one final time before he vanished through the shattered window.

"She isn't what we were told."

Then they were gone, and the clinic fell silent, and I looked down to find blood on my hands, dark and sticky, some of it not mine.

"What just happened?" I asked, voice smaller than I wanted it to be and Kael didn't answer right away, just crossed the room, took my hand, and studied the shallow cut across my palm where the glass had nicked me. A single drop of blood hit the concrete, and the moment it did, his eyes lifted slowly to mine.

"Damn."

"What?"

He didn't answer, just looked toward the shattered window, jaw tightening. "We're too late."

My stomach sank. "Too late for what?"

He met my eyes, and the fear in them was worse than anything Silas had said all night.

"They've seen enough."

  • CAGED BY THE LYON   Chapter 76: What the Architect Offered

The fighting stopped shortly after that, the remaining masked attackers hesitating, uncertain, until Kael called out across the warehouse, voice carrying authority despite the exhaustion evident in every line of him."Stand down," he said. "All of you. Nobody here wants to keep hurting people who were manipulated into this fight."Slowly, one by one, the attackers lowered their weapons, pulling off masks to reveal faces young and frightened, nothing like the disciplined, professional threat their coordinated assault had initially suggested. Silas moved among them carefully, checking for injuries, his own fury from moments ago giving way to something more complicated, recognition, maybe, of exactly how easily fear and manipulation could turn desperate people toward violence they never actually wanted. We gathered the young attackers in a cleared section of the warehouse once the immediate danger had passed, treating injuries, offering water, trying to piece together exactly what had ha

  • CAGED BY THE LYON   Chapter 75: The Attack on the Settlement

We made the drive back to Chicago in record time, exhaustion from the trial shoved aside by fresh, urgent adrenaline, and Rowan kept Miriam on speakerphone the entire way, gathering what details he could through the static and chaos evident in her voice."It's the warehouse district," she said, breathless, clearly moving fast even as she spoke. "The formal signing ceremony for the settlement, the one meant to make the territorial agreement official and binding under the new transitional authority. Someone attacked mid-ceremony, before the ink was even fully dry.""Who," Kael demanded, voice tight with fresh fury despite his exhaustion."We don't know yet," Miriam said. "Masked, organized, considerably more disciplined than the coalition's amateur posturing. Elena's injured. Silas is currently trying to hold the line with whatever forces he has on hand, but they're outnumbered.""We're twenty minutes out," Rowan said, already pushing the truck faster along the darkened highway."Make i

  • CAGED BY THE LYON   Chapter 74: Exactly Enough

I didn't let myself think. Thinking, hesitating, weighing every careful option the way I had during the first two challenges, that was a luxury the creature's advancing footsteps didn't allow.I moved, strength surging through me with fierce, focused clarity, and closed the distance to the creature before it could reach Kael, who strained uselessly against the silver threads, pain etched deep into his face as the restraints continued drawing from whatever strength he had left to give. The creature turned toward me, massive and wrong, something cobbled together from fragments of the same old magic that had warped the Conclave's previous leader into the thing I'd killed on that dark road weeks ago, except this one moved with a deliberate, trained precision that told me Vesper had built it specifically to be dangerous rather than simply monstrous.I didn't hesitate. I struck fast, hard, aiming for exactly the kind of decisive, immediate damage the situation actually required, no more for

  • CAGED BY THE LYON   Chapter 73: Before the Last Test

Three days passed in tense, uncertain quiet, the entire founding grounds holding its breath for a final challenge that refused to announce itself."She's taking longer than the first two times," Rowan observed, still favoring a faint bruise along his wrist from the restraints, though otherwise fully recovered from the ordeal in the cavern. "That has to mean something.""Or it means nothing at all, and she's simply enjoying making us wait," Elena said, exhaustion evident in her voice despite the careful optimism everyone had been trying to maintain since the second challenge's unexpected resolution.I spent most of those three days in quiet, deliberate preparation, though preparation for a test I didn't fully understand felt more like exercise in managing my own fear than anything concretely useful. Kael stayed close through all of it, steady and present in a way that both comforted me and terrified me in equal measure, given everything the Keeper had warned about the third challenge's

  • CAGED BY THE LYON   Chapter 72: No Clean Answer

The second challenge came two days later, in the middle of the afternoon, with exactly as little warning as Vesper had promised. We were in the ancient hall, going over what little the damaged text offered about judgment-based trials, when the silver light flared through the hidden passage without any preamble at all, and the Keeper's expression went rigid with immediate alarm."Now," she said. "It's happening now."We rushed down into the cavern, and what waited there stole the breath from my lungs entirely. Two figures stood bound at opposite ends of the space, and it took only a moment of horrified recognition before I understood exactly who Vesper had chosen. On one side, gagged and restrained, stood one of the newly awakened wolves I'd personally helped stabilize during the response effort, a young man named Theo who'd shifted for the first time in a grocery store parking lot, terrified and alone until our team had reached him.On the other side, in the same condition, stood Rowa

  • CAGED BY THE LYON   Chapter 71: No Warning at All

We sent the formal notification that evening, Elena drafting the language carefully with the Keeper's guidance, invoking the renegotiation clause exactly as the old treaty required. There was no immediate response, no confirmation, nothing beyond the strange, unsettling certainty that somewhere, Vesper now knew exactly what we'd chosen."How long do these things usually take to actually begin," I asked, pacing the length of the ancient hall despite the exhaustion dragging at every part of me."There's no usual," the Keeper admitted. "I've read about exactly one prior invocation in my entire lifetime, and that failure happened generations before I was born."We tried to rest that night, though sleep came in fragments for most of us, tension humming beneath every quiet moment. Kael held me close in the same corner of the ancient hall where we'd rested before, his heartbeat steady beneath my ear despite the uncertainty pressing down on both of us."Whatever the first challenge actually i
