Elizabeth’s mouth opened as she turned around—and froze.

Nathan.

Her ex-husband stood just a few feet away, dressed in his usual designer smugness. A gold watch clung to his wrist, and his shirt looked freshly pressed, like he was coming from a lunch meeting where he probably bragged about ruining someone else’s life.

Her stomach churned.

He was the last person she expected to see in this place—at a fun fair, of all things. But then again, monsters always had a way of showing up when you least wanted them to.

“Elizabeth?” he said with a slight laugh, like she was some ghost he hadn’t expected to see. “Well, I’ll be damned.”

She didn’t say anything. Her hand clenched tighter around the pink teddy bear in her arms. Her throat went dry.

“I thought you were dead,” Nathan said, looking her up and down like she was dirt beneath his shoes. “Seriously. You vanished into thin air. What, living under a bridge now? Dumpster diving for teddies?”

Elizabeth took a shaky breath and straightened her

  • CAGED IN HIS OBSESSION    Chapter 45

Liam’s head snapped toward the hallway the moment the sound echoed again—metallic and sharp, like the cocking of a weapon.Elizabeth froze where she stood, her fingers gripping the edge of the bed tightly, heart pounding in her chest. Liam’s blood-soaked form tensed, eyes narrowing as he turned to her.“Stay here,” he said, his voice low and cold, and before she could respond, he was out of the room. The hallway was quiet.Too quiet. He moved swiftly, the dripping of rain outside almost drowning the creak of the floor beneath his feet. The mansion was supposed to be impenetrable. He had men stationed outside. Traps. Layers of security. But somehow… someone was here.He followed the faint noise, his bare feet silent against the wood. As he turned the corner toward the west wing, he saw it—a figure standing in the shadows. A woman. She stepped into the dim light of the hall, a pistol trained steadily in his direction.“Took you long enough,” she said, her voice smooth, laced with venom.

Rain poured outside like the sky itself was grieving. A low rumble of thunder echoed in the distance as Elizabeth lay curled under the sheets, her cheek pressed against the soft pillow. She wasn’t truly asleep. Not deeply. Her thoughts wouldn’t let her.Nathan’s voice kept echoing in her head.“You were nothing without me.”“No man wants a broken woman.”“I kicked you out like trash, and you stayed gone. That’s what you were—garbage.”Each sentence twisted like a blade in her stomach, reigniting old pain she thought had dulled. Her heart ached, her chest rising and falling too quickly, until exhaustion threatened to knock her out for real.Then—Click.The soft sound of the bedroom door opening cut through her thoughts like lightning. Her eyes snapped open. The room was dim, lit only by the gray-blue tint of moonlight spilling in through the curtains. Her gaze moved toward the door—and froze. There he was.Liam.Soaked.Drenched.His white shirt clung to his body, translucent from rai

Liam’s povHer scent was everywhere. Sweet, warm, and infuriatingly addictive. It clung to my skin, curled around my thoughts, and slipped beneath my defenses like silk—irresistible. I stood at the edge of the bed, watching her chest rise and fall softly as she looked up at me with wide, cautious eyes.My fingers itched to touch her again.“Trying to run from me again, hmm?” I asked, my voice low and teasing, the corner of my mouth twitching into a smirk. She didn’t answer. Her bare legs curled slightly under her, still tucked beneath the blanket like she was unsure whether to bolt or stay. God, the way she looked at me—like I was dangerous, but maybe, just maybe, she liked the thrill of being close anyway.I leaned down, slow and deliberate, placing my hands on either side of her, trapping her there. Her breath hitched, and I felt the faintest tremble through the bed as I whispered, “You think you can hide from me in the covers, sweetheart?”Her lips parted, but nothing came out. Jus

Elizabeth’s povThe second Liam’s door closed behind us with a soft click, I knew I was in trouble. Not the kind of trouble that came with yelling or violence—no, this was worse. It was the kind where your heart beats too loud, your breath catches, and you’re not entirely sure if you want to run or melt into the floor. He carried me effortlessly, like I weighed nothing at all. His eyes never left mine, dark and glinting with something dangerous—something amused. He dropped me gently onto the bed, but the mattress barely dipped before he hovered over me, arms caging me in. “You really thought that would stop me?” he asked, voice low, almost amused. My throat tightened. “I didn’t—”“You didn’t?” He mocked my words, head tilting slightly. “Then what was that, hmm?” He brushed his thumb across my lips, the same ones I’d dared to press against his not long ago in a desperate attempt to stop him from going after Nathan. “You kissed me, Elizabeth. You kissed me to distract me… or maybe somet

Elizabeth sat on a bench tucked behind a quiet stall, the lights of the fair still blinking in the distance. She had wandered off in a daze after Nathan left, trying to compose herself, but the weight of his words was too much. They echoed over and over again in her mind like cruel music she couldn’t silence.“You’re nothing without me.”“Should’ve known you’d end up with another lunatic.”“Just like your stupid father—always trusting the wrong people.”Her fingers clenched the hem of her dress tightly as hot tears streamed down her face. Her shoulders shook with every breath, every inhale sharp like glass. The world around her felt distant, unreal, like she was trapped in a dream she couldn’t wake from. She had survived so much, but Nathan’s sudden reappearance pulled her back into the same place he’d left her—broken, humiliated, discarded. Her lips trembled as she whispered, “Why did I deserve this? Why me?” Her voice cracked. “I didn’t ask for any of this…”The betrayal, the loss o
