AMELIA
Do you know how it feels to have your life grind to a halt right before your eyes? That was exactly how I felt after coming back from a long shift at the diner to meet my Fiancé balls deep inside a strange woman.
“Fuck me, Nathan!” The unmistakable shrill voice echoed through the entire hallway.
I stood outside the door, frozen for what felt like an eternity. My heart pounded erratically in my chest, and I forced my breathing to calm. But even as I forced myself to breathe, my body refused to cooperate.
Was this some kind of dream?
My bag clattered to the floor as I pushed the door open. There—on the same bed we had shared for the past five years—was Nathan, my Fiancé, thrusting into a blonde lady like a madman. My position at the door made me see everything: the way his cock slid into her, the way her head was tilted back while she moaned like a slut, and Nathan’s back turned to me.
What was worse? They didn’t even acknowledge me. Nathan never touched me like this, so loving and intense. Never. He was always so quick to cum and push me to the side like some used toy.
My heart almost gave out. Hot tears streamed down my cheeks.
“Nathan!” I screamed at the top of my voice, and he finally turned.
His dark eyes were murderous as he glared at me. “Amelia, why are you screaming down the house?” He turned around and continued thrusting, grunting louder than before. “At least, let me fucking finish!”
I gasped, the shock making me stumble back. My legs hurt from my shift at the diner, but I didn’t even mind anymore. My feet were rooted to the floor while I watched him climax. When he finished, he kissed the stranger softly, then pulled out of her and grabbed the towel by the bed.
“Nathan…” The tears wouldn’t stop falling. “I do everything you ask. I pay the rent, stock up on groceries and—“
He led the strange lady to the bathroom, stopping at the entrance to look at me. “I have a new and better place, Amelia. I’ve packed already and will be leaving after I’m done here. You’re useless to me. I’m tired of staying with a wolfless Omega who can’t even get a decent job.”
My fist flew to my mouth as I turned around and ran out of the room. When I got outside, I realized that my car keys were in my bag that I dropped, so I went back for it. They were both in the bathroom now, and I could hear the giggles and soft kissing.
By the time I got behind the wheel of my barely-functioning car, the tears erupted. Nathan had always said that he loved me like that, despite me not having a wolf. He… he loved me, or so I thought.
I used to work in one of the best hospitals here in Fairmont, but after refusing a sexual advance from my boss, I was framed and fired. By the time I took my resume around all the other hospitals in the city, I realized that my name had been blacklisted. I couldn’t practice as a nurse or physical therapist anywhere.
That was the main reason I ended up doing long shifts at the diner. And now… my whole world was crumbling.
I drove aimlessly through the streets, wiping my eyes repeatedly to clear my vision. More than twice, I almost had an accident. Eventually, I pulled up by the roadside and called Maya. When I started to work at the diner some years back, we instantly clicked and soon became best friends.
“Maya,” I croaked. “Are you still on your shift?”
I could almost picture the frown on her face. “Yes, I am. Are you crying? What’s wrong, Amelia?”
“Nathan,” I sobbed loudly. “I met him fucking another girl. He…” I swallowed thickly, trying to calm myself. “He said he can’t be with an Omega with no wolf. Maya… he called me useless.”
On the other end, Maya gasped. “Good goddess! Amelia, come down here immediately. Just leave that house for now.”
“I’m coming already.”
I wiped my eyes and pressed hard on the accelerator. The moment I got out of the car, I went straight to the back where I knew Amelia would be. She welcomed me into her arms immediately, patting my back softly.
“Shh, it’s okay. I’ve always known that he was no good. You’re not useless, Amelia.”
I stayed in her arms until my arms stopped trembling. Then I pulled back and wiped my eyes.
“He said he’s packing out,” I whispered, sniffing hard. “He said he’s leaving the house.”
Maya’s hazel eyes blazed. “He better leave! You don't need him at all.”
I managed a small laugh, but it sounded bitter. “I didn’t even know what to say or do. I called you after driving out of the house. I guess I’ll work your night shift with you.”
“You need to just relax for a while. You shouldn’t work now.”
I was still in my uniform. I hadn’t taken it off before what happened, so it was only fair that I continued with work.
“I don’t think I can sit still, Maya. I feel like I need to be on my feet to get my mind off this evening.”
“I understand, Amelia. But—” She motioned to the small bed behind her. “—maybe you should lie there and rest for a while. Let me serve some customers.” As she turned to go, she suddenly looked back. “Did you apply for the physical therapist position for the Dark Wolves?”
I almost sighed. Maya always did this thing where she pushed me to apply for vacant positions around Fairmont, and every time I did, I got a negative result.
Just last week, I applied for a nursing home caregiver position after they announced a shortage of staff. Despite that, I was rejected. Before that, it was a nutritionist position in an under-fifteen soccer club.
My skills covered basic nursing, physical therapy, and a vast knowledge of nutrition—which should have landed me the job—but even that didn’t help.
The last one was the vacant physical therapist position for the Dark Wolves, one of the best hockey teams in Fairmont. There was no fucking way I would even land something like that. Not in a million years.
When Maya had told me to apply after seeing it on her phone, I knew that it was a lost cause. But I had applied anyway.
“Hello?”
I blinked back to the present, sighing heavily. “Yes, Maya, I applied.”
“Good. Give me some minutes to attend to these dickheads. I’ll be back.”
I settled on the bed, thinking of closing my eyes for a moment, when my phone suddenly began to ring. I dragged it out of my pocket, my heart hammering in my chest as I thought of Nathan.
Did he want to apologize?
But when I looked at the screen, it was a strange number. I picked anyway.
“Hello, is this Amelia Rhodes?”
I sat up frowning. “Yes, this is Amelia.”
“Oh, good. You’ve been selected as the new physical therapist of the Dark Wolves.”
AMELIABefore I could argue, he opened the driver’s door wide and gestured for me to get in. Oh. Relief actually flooded through my chest, but I didn’t let it settle.“Why are you staring at me like that?” he grinned. “Don’t you want to test the car? I promise you, your mind is about to be blown!”I swear to the goddess, just seeing him this merry and carefree was so welcoming compared to how Austin had treated me, but then, this man had crashed into me and then almost got me killed. He wasn’t any better than Austin, if you think about it.Without saying a word, I slid into the car. Then he walked around to the passenger’s side and settled into the seat as though he’d been invited.I stared at him. “You’re very comfortable making decisions for other people.”“I prefer to think of myself as helpful.”“That’s not exactly the word I’d use.”His eyes sparkled. “Relax, Amelia.” He brightened. “Now, before you start the engine, let me explain what we did. Your suspension was practically cr
AMELIAAustin Hayes was an asshole.A handsome, infuriating, insufferable asshole.I leaned back against the taxi seat, watching Fairmont pass by through the window as I replayed my first official day at the Dark Wolves headquarters. The city was alive with its usual evening rush, and normally, I would have enjoyed the view. Today, however, I was too busy thinking about my new job.One would think that getting hired by the very Alpha who had personally selected me for the position would make things easier. Instead, Austin had looked at me as though my presence offended him. What an Alpha! Was he that difficult with everyone, or was he deliberately trying to test my patience? Well, he could try all he wanted. I had enough patience for him.I needed this job, and I wasn’t about to let one arrogant hockey captain ruin it for me.Nathan hadn’t called or sent a message since he left. Not that I wanted him to. I was perfectly happy never hearing from him again. He could take his cheating, h
AUSTINAmelia… right? What exactly was it with her barging into rooms like she owned the place? My frown deepened as I stared into her eyes. She had a quiet kind of gaze that made it difficult to look away, something between brown and the color of sunset. Her hair was a dark-brown color, silky, and falling lusciously behind her.I couldn’t pretend that she wasn’t beautiful, but even that wasn’t enough to make me ignore that she was somehow always fucking barging into places. To the goddess, the main reason I picked her was simply because of her beauty. I’d taken one look at the list and immediately felt that she would be perfect for the role. Yes, she was very experienced, but her face had stood out to me.My fingers around her waist twitched. We were frozen in that position for what felt like an eternity, and just thinking about someone walking past us like this made me feel like letting her go.Her eyes, which had been wide in panic, slowly calmed, moving over my bare chest before s
AMELIAI was already pushing the door of the taxi open even before it completely stopped. It was almost midnight.I’d signed that contract immediately like my life depended on it. Well, it did. Since it was quite late, Victoria tried to make me stay the night after showing me to my room, but I had politely refused.I’d left an injured man in my house after getting pursued around the city by unknown gunmen. My car was covered in blood out front. Nathan had moved all his things out. And I’d landed a job I couldn’t have imagined getting even in a million years.Mind you, all these happened in one night. Talk about the goddess working overtime.I stopped in front of my car and looked in through the shattered side glass. What a mess. I quietly made my way to the front porch and opened the door carefully. Oh.What was his name again? Rowan? Ru—No, Roman… if I could clearly remember. He was still on the floor in the exact spot I left him, sleeping soundly. The bandages weren’t stained, and t
AMELIA“And who the fuck are you?”At once, unpleasant and offensive pheromones permeated the room. Oh, straight to the point and very harsh. I moved my gaze to his face. His eyes were like warning icy daggers shooting straight at me.“Hi,” I managed. I instantly regretted it. The charge in the air tripled, almost bringing me to my knees. His eyes narrowed dangerously. “I asked who the fuck you are.”I opened my mouth to speak but the door behind me suddenly opened. I took one look at Victoria and almost collapsed to my knees in relief. Thank the goddess!“I knew you would get lost,” she chuckled, then moved her gaze to Austin. “I can see that you are already meeting the captain. This is Austin—““Who the fuck is this?” he growled, pointing at me with one hand, while the other was balled at his side.“The physical therapist you picked, Austin.” Victoria rolled her eyes. “I know you’re such a grumpy grandpa, but look closely, and take back your pheromones now.”He did look closer, and
AMELIAI am losing my mind.I repeated the words in my head until it was all I could hear. If I wasn’t out of my goddamn mind, I wouldn’t have brought this strange man to my home. The same man who had just dragged me into his hell.It was no coincidence that this was happening today of all days, today that I was supposed to be somewhere that could change my entire life.I assisted him up the front porch even though he didn’t need it, and as soon as he got inside, he collapsed on the floor, gasping for air.He should be healing, but then, he had mentioned something about poisoned bullets. Whoever was after him wanted him dead.I rushed for an emergency kit in the bedroom, and before I got back to him, he had managed to take off his shirt. His body was a beautiful artwork of ink, blood, and bullet holes. How the hell was he still alive?“I left Sonya back there,” he muttered, breathing fast. His eyes roamed around the sitting room lifelessly, making me realize that he would soon pass ou
