Kevin has come to his senses? Has he realized how heartless he just was? I hesitated, unsure whether I should give him another chance.
Me: 'Tonight?'
Kevin: 'Yeah. I’ve been thinking about everything. I was wrong.'
I was a bit hesitant, but if Kevin really asked me out and was going to apologize, I probably should go.
But I didn't expect that he sent another message, saying, ‘Just… wear that white dress you used to wear when we first met? You looked so happy then. I want to remember us like that.’
Part of me screamed not to go. But another voice—the one that had clung to Kevin’s every kind word over the last months—whispered that maybe, just maybe, he meant it this time.
Maybe he finally saw me.
I wasn't ready to give up on the person I once thought would fight the world for me.
A few minutes later, I stood in front of the mirror, fingers hovering over the white colored dress Kevin asked me to wear. It was the same one that I used to wear when they first met, three years ago. Kevin had always said it was that “soft moonlight” look that made him fall for her at first sight. Then Ginny moved in and started buying the same dresses.
I glanced at her reflection in the mirror. It was the same white dress but now it felt like a poor imitation. For a few minutes, I was confused on whether to go, or to ignore but despite the fact that I called off the marriage, I just couldn't let go of my feelings, I had loved Kevin for three whole years, so I decided to meet him.
By 6:00 PM, I was already standing in the middle of the park, pacing slowly near the old fountain where we always met. The sky was beginning to dim, and the evening air had turned sharp.
I checked my phone—no messages.
At 6:10, I gave in and called Kevin. Once. Twice. Three times. No answer. Each ring that went to voicemail only deepened the pit in my stomach. I stared at the screen, hoping it would light up with his name. It didn’t.
Time dragged.
7:00. 8:00.The street lamps buzzed to life one by one. My fingers were numb from the cold, but I stayed.
Finally, at 8:58, my phone rang. His name appeared on the screen. I didn’t even wait for him to speak.
“Why are you late again, Kevin?” I snapped, my voice tight with anger. “Do you even care I’ve been out here for nearly three hours?”
“You really do stand out in that white dress, Rhea.” Kevin chuckled on the other end.
I frowned, confused by what he said, “What do you mean?”
“Ginny’s been getting followed by some creep lately, he hacked into her phone and asked her to meet him at where you were standing tonight so take Ginny's place for tonight, this is a way that you can repay her for what she has done for you.” His voice was so cruel.
My breath caught in my throat. “What?”“What?!” I whispered, blinking against the sting in my eyes as the chilly night air suddenly felt ten degrees colder.
Kevin’s voice was maddeningly casual. “You’re always so jumpy. Nothing’s going to happen, just… stay where you are. It’s important.”
“Important for who?” I snapped.
“For Ginny,” he replied, almost bored. “Someone’s been bothering her. Just pretend to be her for a while. We’ll be watching nearby.”
“You… you sent me here as bait?” My voice trembled, my fists curling tightly at my sides, “Because Ginny didn’t want to deal with a stalker? Because you didn’t want her to?”
“She’s delicate, Rhea. You know that.” He sighed, as if he were the one inconvenienced, “She’s already under so much pressure with the engagement and the family. Can’t you just do this one thing without turning it into some pity party?”
“You told me to wear this dress.” I said, my voice low with horror, realization dawning, “You planned this. You made me wear the same thing she would’ve worn… so he’d think I was her.”
Kevin was silent for a beat. Then, “You're overthinking it again.”
“No.” I whispered, “No, I’m finally thinking clearly.”
I looked around the empty park. The flickering streetlamp above me buzzed ominously, shadows stretching across the pavement like claws. A couple passed by, whispering and giggling, oblivious. But other than that, it was just me.
“You really hate me that much, don’t you?” I asked, “You were never going to come tonight. You didn’t want to talk. You just wanted me to take Ginny’s place one last time, like I’ve been doing my whole life. You don't even care if I live or die?”
“I don’t hate you.” Kevin said coolly, “I just don’t have time for someone who makes everything about themselves. This was Ginny’s problem, and you’re supposed to be family, right? Or does that only work when it benefits you? Don't be dramatic Rhea and just do as I said, I would be willing to forgive you for everything you did in the past and we can start anew.”
My hands trembled so violently that I nearly dropped the phone. For a second, I couldn’t speak. Then…
“Go to hell, Kevin.” hung up and shoved the phone deep into my coat pocket, swallowing the lump in my throat.
My legs felt like jelly, my pulse thudding in my ears. I turned around and started walking toward the park exit, hugging myself tightly as the cold wind blew against my damp cheeks. Just a few more steps and I’d be free of this nightmare.
But then…
Crunch.
The soft sound of a footstep on gravel. I froze. Slowly turned my head but not stopping my walk.
Crunch. Crunch. Crunch.
My breath hitched. The steps were matching mine, just a second behind.
I picked up my pace and so did the person behind me. My heart slammed against my ribs as I broke into a run. The sound of feet pounding the ground grew louder behind me.
Panic exploded in my chest. I cut sharply across the path, shoes slipping on damp grass, “Help!” I tried to scream, but my voice cracked in my throat.
I didn’t even see the raised root.
My foot caught, and I fell. Hard. Pain exploded in my knees and palms as I hit the dirt. I scrambled to push myself up, but a hand shoved me back down.
“W…Wait! Stop!” I shrieked, thrashing wildly.
A weight pressed down on me, someone straddling my back.
“Thought you could run, you little slut?” the voice snarled into my ear. It was rough, furious, unhinged, “You thought you could seduce him and get away with it?”
I screamed, kicking, clawing at the ground, trying to throw him off. Then, the first stab landed in my abdomen. I gasped, the air rushing from my lungs.
Pain shot through me like lightning. I heard the fabric of my dress tear, once white and soft, now soaked in blood.
The man above me growled, his breath reeking of cigarettes and alcohol, “You filthy bitch! Trying to seduce Ginny’s boyfriend?! She told me what you were doing. How you were playing innocent, pretending to be the victim. So she sent me here to help her deal with you!”
“W… What?” He knew Ginny? She was the one who sent him? My thoughts spiraled. None of it made sense, yet somehow it all did. Ginny knew that this would happen… She had sent this man to kill me. Why? Why did she hate me this much?!
Another stab tore through my side, and I screamed. My nails scraped across the ground, searching for anything, to hold onto.
But all I found was blood.
My blood.
And then the night sky lit up.
At first, I thought it was a hallucination—blood loss, maybe. But no. It was real.
Hundreds of drones soared overhead and they formed letters that glowed in the sky,
“HAPPY BIRTHDAY GINNY, MY PRINCESS. FROM KEVIN.”
I couldn’t breathe. Not because it hurt, but from how utterly, monstrously theatrical this betrayal was...
Kevin, I hate you.
Rhea's Pov“When you say, ‘rival the Montaigne’, what exactly do you mean by that?” I questioned.“Oh.” Carmen let out a small laugh, “I mean it literally. You might not know this, but my background is not little at all. I come from a long line of people who are related to the president of Imperial City.”“Huh?!” I gasped, then promptly covered my mouth with my hands. I didn't mean to interrupt but I was too shocked not to, “I… I'm sorry I…”“No, it's fine. Not a lot of people know this since I haven't appeared in public for a long time. I'm sure people think that the Heiress of the Valerius Family has disappeared entirely.” Carmen finished with a knowing smirk. My heart hammered against my ribs. “V… Valarius? Wait,” I stammered, my voice barely a whisper, “The… the heiress you’re talking about. Is it… is it you?” I had to clutch the edge of the sleek, expensive desk to keep from pitching forward. My legs felt like rubber, and the blood had rushed from my face.Carmen’s smirk widened
Rhea's Pov Should I tell her? Should I not? Currently, I need all the help I can get. “If you don't want to say…” “No. It's fine. It's not going to be hidden for long anyways. Actually, we had an accident and we were all taken to the hospital. Neveah, Laziel and I are fine, same with my husband, Alaric. However, he lost his memories, he can't remember anything about me, or the children. I don't know the extent of his memory loss but I know that it's pretty bad.” I explained, pinching myself to keep the tears from spilling again. “If it was only the memory loss, I would have found a way but… Isabelle Montaigne, a woman who is in love with him and also his secretary has claimed that she is his fiancée and I am a stalker who wants to claim a relationship with him. No matter what I say, Alaric doesn't believe me. I want to believe so badly that Alaric wouldn't do anything to hurt me but at this point, I'm not even sure.” Carmen’s eyes widened, and she gasped softly, pressing a hand t
Rhea's Pov I pulled Neveah closer, my eyes on the woman in front of me. Now that I was dry and feeling warm, I was able to observe everything about her much more clearly. This woman was someone I'd never seen before. I had no idea who she was and yet, she was able to recognise me so quickly. Under the rain, she called my name in a soft way that made me want to talk to her about every single thing I have faced in both my lifetimes. Since I already remembered everything that I forgot after my coma, it wasn't hard to recount it. The only question I had was why this woman was treating us so kindly and what her agenda is. Is she with Isabelle? Did Isabelle send her to get rid of me completely?“Are you comfortable?” The woman suddenly questioned, her voice breaking me out of my thoughts. “Ah? Yes, yes thank you.” I responded with a slight stammer. After I finished crying, she suddenly invited us to her home. I wanted to refuse since I barely knew her but at this point, beggars couldn't
Alaric's Pov “I hope you don't regret it.” The woman's voice kept on echoing in my head, it was the only thing I could hear. Even after she left, for some reason, I could still smell her scent, her tears, her anger. She hadn't broken down and cried, but she cried. The tears that gathered at the corner of her eyes but refused to fall because of her will made me even more confused. Did she really know me? Or was it as Isabelle said? “Alaric.” Isabelle called out my name and I turned around to meet her eyes. Instantly I noticed that it was different from the eyes of that woman. So much different. “Are you okay? You…” “You don't need to concern yourself with me.” I cut her off, my voice coming out cold and flat. I couldn't help it. The scene that had just played out was swirling in my mind, and I needed space to process it.Isabelle flinched, but she quickly masked it, “Alaric, I understand you're confused. But please, don't believe her lies. She’s trying to manipulate you because o
Rhea's Pov A short, humourless sound escaped my throat, “An hour,” I murmured, shaking my head, "Well, Isabelle really is leaving us no choice, is she? She doesn't waste any time." I pushed myself to my feet, the cold, hard floor now feeling like a welcome mat to a new, terrifying reality. “Tell Miss Montaigne I’m happy to oblige.” I said, walking towards the nurse and taking the pathetic brown bag from her hand, “We’ll be gone. She can have the room.” The nurse blinked, clearly shocked, “You… you’re leaving?” She stammered. I managed a faint, chilling smile, “Oh, yes. I’m leaving. We're you expecting me to throw a tantrum and cry about not wanting to leave? Oh, don't worry. I'm not crazy nor stupid enough to do that. So you don't have to worry about calling security, we'll leave on our own.” I gestured towards the small remote she held in her hand. I didn't know what it was for but clearly, it had to do with if we refused to leave. I turned back to Laziel and Neveah, hol
Rhea's Pov The swing door of Alaric’s room closed behind me with a soft, final thud, a mark that clearly defined the end of an arc. But I didn't cry. My smile, which I had plastered on my face for Isabelle’s benefit, felt stretched tight over a scream I refused to let out. I strode back down the white, sterile corridor, my bare feet silent on the ground. The desperate energy from before was gone, replaced by a cold kind of calm. Although Alaric’s temporary insanity was Isabelle’s opportunity, it wasn't the end of anything. I pushed open the door to Neveah's and Laziel's ward. Laziel was a coiled spring of anxiety, pacing the small space near the window, his hands running frantically through his dark hair. Neveah was seated on the edge of the other bed, smaller and quieter than usual, her gaze fixed on the floor. The moment I entered, Laziel spun around, his eyes wide with frantic hope, "Rhea! Thank goodness. How is he? Did you see him? Is he okay?" He rushed out. I walked to the f
