Two years later…
( Damien )
“Damien, I am nervous. I don’t know what will be the result. Your mother isn’t pleased with me. I don’t know how will she react if the reports aren’t positive.”
My wife’s nervous voice put a pause on my thoughts and I grimly looked up at her. She was playing with the hem of her dress.
“Let’s meet the doctor first, Ava. We should not think negative all the time.” I said to her to boost her moral but inwardly, I was also losing my hopes.
It’s been two years since Madeline left me. She blessed me to have a happy family, kids that we couldn’t have together but the fate seems to punish me for leaving Madeline. The fate cursed my second wife’s womb. After so many failed attempts, she’s still barren. My mother’s impatience and her taunts are increasing day by day.
We reached at the private hospital. We had to keep her treatment a secret so our family won’t come into any rumours. My family dislikes being dragged into scandals after my divorce with Madeline and my second marriage within three months under my parents’ constant pressure.
“Mr. Rosewood, Mrs. Ava’s reports have arrived and I examined them thoroughly. I am sorry to tell you this but your wife can’t conceive either naturally or through IVF. Her body isn’t responding to any latest medical technologies.” The doctor broke the news which both I and Ava were dreading.
I closed my eyes and let her words sink into my mind. This was heartbreaking for me but I have to accept the decision of my fate. Ava broke down. It was more tragic for her. I feel bad for my wife because I can’t even love her. Our marriage is purely based on the agreement between us. I just patted her back. I can’t express my feelings to another woman after Madeline.
“Ava, calm down. It is true that you can’t conceive a baby but you both still can have your own baby through another process.” The doctor said and we both looked at her with confusion though I knew what was she going to suggest.
“Are you suggesting us to….” I paused because she nodded her head positively.
“Yes, I am talking about surrogacy. I can give you a list of suitable candidates if you want to proceed with the process. I know your family has been pressuring you. Mrs. Rosewood called me multiple times since morning to know the test results.” The doctor said.
I was again thrown into predicament. My mother is a woman who gets what she wants at any cost and her only motive in life is to see her heir.
“Damien, I am ready for this. I don’t want your mother to throw me out of your life just like your first wife. I won’t be able to do that. Please, just say ‘yes’ to this procedure. At least, we’ll have our child.” Ava said while crying. I could see fear more than pain.
There was no emotional connection between us. She just wanted to fulfil the conditions of the agreement my mother forced her to sign before our marriage. I didn’t stop her because there was no way I could marry Rachel.
I couldn’t find myself to picture Rachel as my wife.
“Let’s discuss it with our family first, Ava. I don’t want any complications in my life later. I am tired of dealing with this shit again and again.” I said in exhausted tone because my family’s expectations won’t allow me to live peacefully even for a moment. The last time I was actually happy when I fell in love with Madeline and we had created many beautiful memories together.
*******************
“What? Have you lost your mind?” My mother yelled as I predicted when we told her about doctor’s advice. Her angry demeanour frightened Ava who started crying hysterically.
“Mother, calm down. You are scaring her.” I tried to convince my mother.
“Damien, how can you think about this? I can’t accept a child born from another woman who isn’t your wife. When I requested you to marry Rachel, you refused because that witch filled your ears. See the outcome of your stubbornness, this wild grass is also useless.” My mother looked at Ava disdainfully.
“Mother, it’s not her fault. Do not blame her for something which isn’t in her control. If you want us to have an heir, then we’re going to take help of a surrogate or just forget about it. I want peace and stability in my life.” I said in a bit stern tone which left my mother flabbergasted.
“Lydia, listen to our son. He married twice but there is still no heir to this family. If you keep behaving like a oppressor, I believe our family will break away and it is not good for our reputation.” My father spoke for the first time in the argument and I felt relieved because even mother can’t go against his decision.
“David, are you serious? What will the society say if they find out that the daughter-in-law of our family failed to provide us with an heir. Our son isn’t a father yet.” My mother, who could lose the fight, said.
My father turned to face me, “Damien, your mother is right. It disappoints me how you married women from families who aren’t to our level but we respected your decision. We are again ready to accept your decision if you want to go with this process but keep it very private. Make sure that the woman who will carry your child, will never come into light, sign a non-disclosure agreement with her. Most importantly, her identity, her background must be cleaned.” My father, who himself had a child out of wedlock advised me but I kept silent because it would be the end of my miserable life.
“Alright, I’ll meet you within two weeks with the good news.” I said triumphantly.
A wrong decision still hurts me. I always live with the guilt and anger that I could have talked to Madeline and asked her why did she betray me. Perhaps, we could be together. If having a child through this was in my fate, I could have a child wi
th the woman I loved.
Or perhaps I still love her.
[ Damien ]“Mr. Rosewood, congratulations. The procedure of transferring of the embryo is successful. The surrogate mother is healthy. Do you want to meet her as well?” The doctor asked us.I wasn’t bothered much. The surrogate was picked by the doctor and my wife Ava. I had very busy in my work lately. I was in London when Ava selected the right candidate according to the reports. Today’s the day when the doctor called us to confirm the success of failure of the procedure.“Yes, doctor. I have met her but I want my husband to meet our surrogate as well. After all, she is going to give us the biggest good news of our life.” Ava said with a wide smile.“Thank you, doctor. Yes, today, I want to meet her. She must be a woman of good health and with clean background.” I said leaning back on the chair.“Don’t worry, Mr. Rosewood. We value our patients and your family is the most important family in the city. Of course, I have picked the best candidates and only proceeded when your wife gav
[ Madeline ]The flabbergasted faces of my ex-husband and in-laws gave me the uttermost satisfaction that I had been waiting to see since I existed from their lives two years ago.“Damien, if you won’t throw this lying b*tch from here right now, I swear I am going to do something horrible today.” Lydia Rosewood turned red in anger, she looked ready to kill me but I wasn’t afraid of her anymore, I knew she won’t hurt a single hair on my body.“I think you should take care of your daughter-in-law first, Madam Rosewood. She needs medical attention.” I said glancing over the fainted woman whom Damien laid on the sofa. I felt a dull ache in my heart to see how quickly he moved on in his life and married another woman because he desperately wanted a child. All the love, promises and sweet words were plain lies that he fed me.“Mr. Rosewood, I can confirm with the doctor if you and your mother is having a hard time to believe me.” I said, putting extra efforts in the over acting.Damien’s fa
[ Madeline ]“What? Have you lost your mind, Maddie?” My friend Ellie yelled at me as soon as I told her everything I had done in last few months.“Yes, I am pregnant.” I nodded my head and sipped my juice comfortably with a satisfied heart.“You’re pregnant and may I know who is the father and when did you get hooked? Oh My God! Why am I hearing this now?” Ellie ran her fingers through her hairs.“I didn’t tell you because then you would stop me from doing this, Ellie.” I said and played with my ring.“Maddie, why do I have a feeling that you did something crazy. Tell me, how did you get pregnant if you’re really pregnant.” Ellie asked me. She found it hard to believe me.“Damien is the father.” I said with bitterness. She spilled her coke and looked at me with wide eyes.“What did you just say?” She exclaimed.“You heard me right. My ex-husband is the father of my baby.” I told her the secret I had been keeping from everyone.“Maddie, tell me that you’re joking because it doesn’t ma
[ Madeline ]“You can not live here in my house.”I flinched at the intensity of the woman’s scream and the crashing sound following. I saw a flower vase laying on the floor in thousand pieces and a fuming Ava Wilson in front of me.“Excuse me, Mrs. Rosewood. I am not here on my own will. Your husband and in-laws want me to stay under the same roof so your incapability to have a child won’t get a wind.” I taunted her. I might sound like a total bitch but she’s a greedy woman who didn’t hesitate to sign the agreement behind her husband’s back.“Lier! I didn’t know you were his ex-wife or I’d never signed the agreement.” She lost her control.“Yet, you did, Mrs. Rosewood. It was your desperation that led you to trust on some papers without meeting the woman who was going to carry your child.” I reminded her with a cocky smile. Her face turned red in embarrassment. Her tears made me feel guilty but I couldn’t fall weak. I can’t trust these rich people again.“Ma’am, where should I put Mi
[ Madeline ]“What are you doing here? I told the maids to take your dinner in your room. Only family members and wanted guests dine with us on this table.” Ava said under gritted teeth when I entered in the dining room.Damien was already present there. It was quite awkward for me as well. Ava was sitting on his left side while I used to sit on his right side. I found the chair empty.“I can eat in my room but I don’t want to. I am going to live here for next few months and if you can’t bear my sight, that’s your problem. You know how harmful is the stress for the unborn babies? Oh sorry, how can you understand? You aren’t pregnant.” I gave her the taste of her own medicine and this time he looked up.His cold eyes didn’t give any reflection of his thoughts.“Damien, are you listening her words? She is taunting me.” Ava made a crying face and I smiled looking in the other direction.“Let her dine with us, Ava. She is right. If she’s going to stay with us. We can’t put restrictions on
[ Madeline ]My heartbeats rose when I looked into those beautiful eyes for the first time in years, they are same, beautiful and mystic. I could hear the rhythm of our heartbeats.“You’re still the same clumsy woman. You would have fallen and hurt yourself and the baby.” He said pulling me out of my illusion. So, the concern was only for the baby. He doesn’t want his heir to be hurt. Rage fuelled me again and I balanced myself on my feet again. I masked my vulnerable emotions by a cold face.“It was you who bumped into me, Mr. Rosewood. I am not clumsy. Life has given me fair share of ups and down that I don’t afraid of falling because I know I have to heal myself. People around me can only give me endless pain.” I said as harshly as I could. My words made his face twitch but I was already on my way to my room because the longer I stay in his vicinity, the weaker my resolution will become.“You can not always blame others for your problems, Madeline when you are the one responsible f
[ Madeline ]“I am sorry, Ma’am but you’re not allowed to meet Mr. Rosewood without an appointment.” The receptionist on the ground floor of Rosewood’s ‘Grand Plazza Groups of Hotels’ looked at me with a haughty look and continued typing over the computer.I sighed and took a deep breath to control my anger. Years passed and nothing has changed in last two years. He still hires haughty and arrogant people to work for him.“I am here to join the office as the new assistant of the head of marketing and strategy department, Mrs. Vance. Now, give me the pass to enter in the building or if still have any doubt call your dearest boss and ask him about Miss Madeline Smith.” I slammed my hands on her desk and my dominant side made her gulp.“You are creating a scene here, Miss Smith. I want you to leave now before I call security to throw you out of here.” She threatened me.I rolled my eyes and dialled Damien’s number. I put the phone on speaker.“What do you want now?” He asked in a flat to
[ Madeline ]“What! A surrogate!”Jason’s exclaim made both I and Damien flinch. Damien shot me a glare. I broke a rule of our agreement.“Guys, what’s going on? Why are you standing like a statue? Please, explain me.” Jason looked between us.“Jason, it must not leak to anyone from you. Do you understand?” Damien spoke, he seemed to struggle with words and I was enjoying his situation.“Come on, Damien. I am your best friend and when I share our secret with a third person.” Jason sounded offended.“This is something which can’t be spread, so I am requesting you to keep it to yourself.” Damien said and sighed deeply, “When I and Ava failed to conceive a baby naturally, we chose the option of surrogacy. I don’t know how but she ended up becoming the surrogate.” Damien told him signalling at me.“Holy Goodness! This is like a scene from a daily soap. Your ex-wife is back in your life as your surrogate. The woman you abandoned because she couldn’t give you a child, is actually pregnant w
[ Damien ]“Damien…” Madeline ran into my arms as soon as I stepped into the house. I immediately found my solace and hugged her even tighter.“I was scared. I begged the police to allow me to see you but they didn’t listen to my pleads.” She broke down into tears and my heart clenched seeing her like that.“I am back home, Maddie. Please, don’t cry. You are my strength. I need your support the most right now. Please, stay strong for me.” I said stroking her back. She broke the hug and looked at me with red swollen eyes, it was evident that she had been crying ever since she heard the news.“I can assure you that I will fight till the end. I haven’t killed her and I need to find the culprit who took someone’s life just to seek revenge on me.” I assured her wiping her tears. “I believe you, Damien, you can’t kill anyone but whoever killed Ava, they must be really dangerous people.” She said.“Nothing will happen to us. I am going to find them very soon, Maddie. Please, don’t stress yo
[ Damien ]My mind stopped working. I didn’t know what was happening around me. I was summoned to come to the police station, they interrogated me for hours, asking me same question again and again. I had no idea what was going on.Ava was killed and the blame fell on me that I wanted to remove her from my way. Her family was persistent to prove it. The killer left no evidence but they found my hair at the crime spot and I didn’t know what were they trying to prove.I just sat there silently, my mind went to all the directions and imagined the worst outcomes. I had no alibi. Who was backing a low life coward like Ava’s father? Most importantly, my heart was scared for Madeline. Did she already know? What will happen to her if I go to jail. My own family is her enemy.I rubbed my face while gazing at my shoes.“Mr. Rosewood, you can leave as for now. Your bail is approved. I must say that you have the best lawyers in your pocket but I am also not someone whom you can buy with money. Ma
[ Darius ]“Please, stop. You are tickling me.” Madeline giggled when I dropped feathery kisses on her open cleavage.“Why? Don’t you like when I kiss you here, like this?” I kissed her throat and made my way down to her valley, her back arched with the slow pleasure I was giving her.“Damien, you’ll be late. Just go, the court opens at ten and it’s already eight. You can’t be irresponsible.” She reminded me for the fifth time since we woke up.“You are a mood spoiler. Yes, the court opens at ten but our case will be discussed at eleven thirty. You know I am not the only man who wants divorce from an unhappy marriage.” I said rolling beside her but locked her in my arms.“Hey, don’t say that it’s offending because I am also a woman and in most of the cases, men are at wrong.” She glared me.“Ouch, I am sorry. I didn’t mean to target the women but those who are toxic.” I apologised and kissed her nose.“You’re such a sweet talker but we can’t stay in bed like this. Come on, let me get
[ Madeline ]“I am nervous, Damien.” I said, my body broke into sweat as soon as the driver pulled the brakes in the parking lot of the clinic.I was at the doctor for a routine checkup. I haven’t consulted her after my incident but now, I wanted to ensure that my babies are fine and we are also there to find out the gender of our babies which made sweat even more.“Don’t be nervous. We’ll get to know today what we’re having. Personally, I want girls, a replica of their mother, beautiful and smart.” He said grabbing my hand and kissed my palm.“I bet your mother won’t wish for that.” I laughed and we made our way inside the clinic.“I don’t care what others want, Maddie. For me, you and our babies are my first and foremost priority regardless of their gender.” He said and it touched my heart because most of the men wish for a boy. There were no other patients so we were directly led to the doctor’s office.“How are you doing, Madeline?” Doctor asked me as she gestured us to sit.“Doct
[ Madeline ]“Madeline, it’s already very late. Please, take some rest. Damien must be caught in some important work otherwise he would be home by this time.” Nancy tried to tell me for the umpteenth time but my anxiety was growing with passing hours.“How can I sit at ease, Nancy? He left with Ava as soon as we come home. It’s already ten and he hasn’t responded to my calls and texts. I don’t know what is happening between them or where has he taken her.” I shared my concern with her while tapping his feet on the floor. She gave me a helpless look and decided to wait with me as other house staff already retired to their homes. Nancy stays with us in the mansion.“Did he say something or you observed something unusual before they left without informing me?” I asked her and she looked away. I knew she knew something which she wasn’t telling me because hemigh“Damien asked me and other maids to pack Ava’s stuffs and it’s already sent back to her home.” She told me and I was shocked.“He
[ Damien ]“What are you saying, son? You want to divorce my daughter? What happened? Did she do something to upset you?” Ava’s father asked when he recovered from the shock that my news delivered to them.“Yes, she tried to kill my babies.” I said, there was no point of saving her because her family will again use her as a pawn to trap another family. I have investigated their background and I found they are in debt and it will be easier for me to get rid off such greedy family.“What?” My mother’s face turned red because her heirs are the only valuable tressure for her.“Mother, I can explain you. Trust me, I didn’t wan-” She couldn’t finish her sentence as my mother slapped her hard across her cheek.“How dare you to hurt my grandkids. Have you forgotten your place?” Mother yelled at her menacingly.I stepped between them to stop more violence because I wanted to sort the matter peacefully and also want to close the chapter there.“Mom, we can also talk in a civil way. There is no
[ Damien ]I don’t know how to thank the Almighty who gave me everything back which was taken away from me. I still feel like it’s a dream or a miracle.A miracle precisely. When Madeline revealed that she is pregnant with our babies, not Ava and mine surrogate twins, my happiness had no bounds. After a really long time, I realized what true happiness means. It was a surreal experience that I never want to forget. It gave me another reason to fight for my love and my happiness. Finally, my dream of having a family with the woman I love will be fulfilled.Madeline got discharged the next day but the doctor advised her strict bed rest for a week and I’ll make sure she follows all the precautions because I don’t want to take another chance.“Welcome home.” Nancy exclaimed with a wide smile and ran to Madeline first whom I was holding for support even though she denied but I didn’t listen.“Nancy, how are you?” Madeline asked her as they shared a hug.“I am good but this house felt empty
[ Madeline ]When I tried to open my eyes, I felt like my body was hit by a truck and my head was heavy. The last time I recalled, I was at the Ramirez’ party, dancing with Damien and then his wife came. We argued and she pushed me.My heartbeats increased and a known fear gripped me. My breathing became uneven as I remembered feeling a sharp pain in my abdomen before passing out.My babies!“Hey, calm down, you are fine.” I heard Damien’s soft voice and I looked at my right side with blurry vision. His face came into my view and I saw a relieved smile on his face.I removed my oxygen mask and laboured my breath before asking him about my babies, “How..how..are the babies?” I looked at him dreadfully.“They are fine because their mother is a fighter. She will protect them at any cost.” He said gently stroking my hairs.I closed my eyes and thanked the God. I didn’t know when the last time I felt this much happier after knowing that my babies weren’t hurt. I would have died if somethin
[ Darius ]“Please, save our baby.”These words kept ringing into my ears as I anxiously tapped my feet on the tiled floor of the hospital corridor, continuously praying the Almighty to keep my babies and Madeline out of danger but her words pushed me in a web of confusion. Why did she refer the babied as ‘our’ babies? They are my babies, it’s true but they’re not blood related to her. The more I recall her words, the more I was desperate to seek my answers. Only Madeline can answer me.“Damien, she’ll be fine. You have to keep faith.” Giselle, who insisted to come to the hospital with me saying she is a local and she knows the place better than anyone else. Miguel also provided security and privacy for us so the news won’t leak in the public.I requested him to handle the guests who witnessed the whole scene. I don’t want this news to reach to my city and to my family or my enemies.Half an hour later, the team of doctors who were treating her, came out. I rushed to them. My heartbea
