“Ma’am, we advise you to take Mrs. Scott home and take care of her as long as she lives. The treatment isn’t working on her anymore. She is getting weaker with every day. We’re sorry, but we did our best.” Doctor’s words shattered all my hopes.
Tears brimmed in my eyes but I held them back. I had been hearing the same negative response from them for last three years.
“Can I see her now?” I asked him trying to sound normal.
“Sure, she is resting now.” Doctor said.
With a heavy heart, I left doctor’s office and made my way to my mother’s ward. She had been hospitalized for two weeks. It was becoming hard for me to take care of her and her business.
After paying a visit to my mother, I made my way back home. My eyes blankly stared at my phone’s screen. I received no calls or messages from my husband. Another day was about to end but I didn’t expect him to forget my birthday.
It had been like this for past few months. We saw each other less and less. Work is our excuse to avoid coming across each other. He mostly goes on work trips but the rumors follow him like a phantom and eventually reach to my ears.
He meets Vivienne Fisher. They had been spotted together often and deep down I knew that they weren’t just mere rumours but a harsh reality gradually crawling its way to me.
When I reached at our home which feels haunted, I saw a red car parked outside which caught my attention. It wasn’t ours.
“Whose car is this?” I asked the watchmen.
“Ma’am, Mr. Hamilton is home with a friend. The car is hers.” One of them replied and my ears perked up.
My heart felt the same uneasiness but I ignored it and made my way inside. I smelled his expensive perfume lingering in the air.
He was home after three weeks.
My mood turned sour and blood ran cold when I saw Vivienne sitting on the sofa with a drink. Her eyes met mine and they darkened.
“What are you doing here, Miss Fisher?” I asked her straight, there was no tenderness in my tone for her.
“I don’t think I need your permission to come here. Don’t forget your place, Olivia. I am Stephan’s best friend and I can come here whenever I wish.” She answered with malice in her words.
Our enmity was never hidden from Stephan or anyone.
“But this is not only his house, it’s mine too and I want you gone right now.” I emphasized on my last two words.
“Olivia, I think this is very rude to insult guests.” Stephan’s deep voice forced me to divert my gaze from Vivienne to him.
He was staring at me without any warmth. There was only coldness and it all began when she re-entered in his life.
“Welcome back home, Stephan. I didn’t know that you were coming back today.” I ignored his earlier remark.
“My trip was cut short because Vivienne’s father fell sick. He is admitted in the hospital and it was too late for Vivienne to go to her condo so I invited her to stay here for the night.” He replied.
My heart clenched. He returned after three weeks for his best friend’s father. He never asked me about my mother and how I was taking care of her.
“I am going to my room.” I said and looked away to hide my tears. I walked past him and with quick strands, I made my way to my room.
I had been enduring his coldness for almost a year. I married him for the last wish of his grandfather but Stephan thought I was behind his money and status. It was the reason that he never revealed our marital status to the world.
I thought with passing time, he’d change and see my efforts and my love to save our marriage even though it was just a compromise for him but I realized that I wasted two years of my life for nothing.
“I can’t do this anymore.” I murmured to myself and wiped my tears.
I grabbed my old apartment’s keys and stormed my way out of my room. There was no way that I’d stay in the same house as Vivienne.
“Where do you think you are going at this hour, Olivia?” Stephan asked me with a raised brow.
“I will be staying at my house for tonight. I have an early meeting and I have to prepare for the presentation. I need a quiet place to focus.” I answered in the same flat tone.
His brows twitched.
“No one is bothering you here, Olivia and it’s past ten. Your house is on the other end of the city.” He reasoned. He was right but he couldn’t see my pain.
“It’s alright, I can manage like I always do. Good night. Please, take rest. It must be a long journey for you and Miss Fisher. I won’t bother you more.” I said and walked past him.
My tears finally spilled as I drove out of there.
Once I reached at my old house, I broke down and cursed the day when I agreed to marry a cold-hearted man like Stephan Hamilton.
I cried until there was no tears left but the voidness was the same, deep and painful. I took a shower and about to retire to my room when the doorbell rang.
It was around midnight and my heart hammered against my chest. Who would come at this time and how did someone know that I was there?
With an alerted senses, I opened the door and found Stephan standing at the door. He was in the same clothes.
“What are you doing here at this time?” I asked him because it was totally unexpected.
He ignored my question and walked inside. I followed him. He turned around to face me.
“Why did you leave our house like an impulsive teenager?” He asked me. There was annoyance in his tone.
“I didn’t want to be an intruder when you have your friend staying at the house. She doesn’t like me and the feelings are mutual from my side.” I gave him an honest answer.
“She doesn’t hate you, it’s your impulsiveness which causes problem between you and her.” He said.
He still believed that I was insecure of his sincere friend.
“You can go back home now, Stephan. It’s quite late.” I said looking away.
There was awkward silence between us for a moment.
He forwarded a gift box to me.
“Happy birthday, Olivia.”
I was shocked because for the first time in two years, he brought a gift for me and wished me.
[ Stephan ]I stared down the window of my office. People were lost in their own race, some rushing to work, some just walking, couples, old people and families. They didn’t have time to look around. In the crowd of people, I felt alone.I had this void in my heart ever since I woke up in a hospital room. My family was there, my friends were present but I felt a part of me missing, a certain someone. I tried to find the reason of this constant restlessness but only despair followed. But today I saw a woman and for the first time, the ache stopped. She was a total stranger but I felt an invisible but deep pulls towards her. Since then, I couldn’t take my mind off her.Who was she?Did I know her from my past that was erased from my memory?A knock on the door put a pause on my conflicting thoughts.“Come in.” I said in my cold tone.I wasn’t in a mood to host anyone so I canceled all the lined up meetings.“Sir, Mr. Brandon is here to see you.” My secretory, Shane informed me.“Send hi
[ Olivia ]I turned around and came face to face with the person who was responsible for all my pain and emotional scars.Vivienne Fisher stood there with pride, smirking at me triumphantly.“Do you know her, Liv?” Ethan asked me.Vivienne’s eyes shifted from me to him and I knew something was going on inside her wicked brain.“Yes, Mr. Walter. I am an old friend of Miss Scott. I didn’t expect to meet her here.” Vivienne answered before me.The word ‘friend’ from her mouth felt like sharp needles piercing through my heart.“Alright, Olivia, you never mentioned anyone from your old life.” Ethan said. He didn’t sound pleased because he thought people in my past life had made me go through hardships.“She wasn’t an important person, so I didn’t think it was necessary to ever talk about her.” I answered him quickly, recovering from my shock to meet all my past ghosts in a single day.“Okay, then let’s go. It’s quite late, and we are all tired.” He said opening the car’s door for me.“Mr.
[ Olivia ]“Stephan, she is an old friend of mine. She happened to attend this bidding as well.” Tiffany’s words forced me out of my trance. He was still looking at me intensely, his pupils flickering but what he said, it made my head spun.“Okay, if you want to talk for a while, I’ll be waiting for you in the car.” He said finally shifting his gaze from me and I felt like someone stabbed my heart brutally. He was still the same man, cold and distant towards me.“The bidding isn’t over yet, Stephan. How can we leave before we see what others are proposing?” Tiffany asked him.“I have presented my ideas, Tiff and I am sure we’re going to get this deal. Vivienne will be here with the team to analyse the rest of the meeting. I am getting late for an important meeting.” He said.Vivienne’s name made my blood run cold. So, I wasn’t wrong all these years, that woman succeeded in her motives. She was in his life.“You can go if you’re getting late for the meeting. I’ll stay here for a while.
[ Olivia ]I couldn’t sit comfortably for the longest twenty minutes as I watched Stephan presenting his ideas, his attention focused on his work. He was radiating confidence like before. He wasn’t changed a bit. Instead, he looked more ruthless when it comes to business.“Liv, are you alright?” Ethan’s worried voice forced me to snap out of my trance. How could I tell him that the man who was on the stage was none other than my ex-husband whom Ethan and my friends hated for leaving me and Emma. There was no way I could reveal about my past because I vowed to leave it behind.“No, I am fine.” I shook my head and tried to act normal because in the dim light of the hall, Stephan couldn’t see me and there was no way I’d come into his sight. There’d be lot on stake and I didn’t want him to find out about the biggest secret I had hidden from him, our daughter. If he comes to know about Emma, he’ll try to take her from me.“The Hamilton Corp. is dedicated to fulfil the dreams of thousands o
[ Olivia ]Two years later…“Thank you, Mrs. Bobby for again agreeing to look after Emma.” I said with gratitude to the elderly neighbor, who happily proposed her help to look after my precious girl, who was throwing her arms at me to pick her up.“Oh, it’s not a problem, dear. I love this little girl who fills my day with happiness and I love to take care of her.” The old woman waved her hand and picked Emma from her stroller.“If I don’t have to go for an outdoor meeting, I would have taken her with me. I don’t know how long it will take for me to return. Please, call me if you need anything.” I said.“Sure, you can go without a worry. Emma is a quiet girl as long as her tummy is full.” She said and I kissed my baby’s head. She smiled widely at me and my heart skipped again. She had the same eyes as her father even if she resembles me.“Mumma is gonna miss you, Emmy. Be a good girl to Grandma.” I kissed her chubby cheeks and it made her giggle even more.“Mum..Mumma.” She said in he
[ Olivia ]It’s been two weeks since I cut all my ties with Stephan and stayed hidden until I figure out my next step which was unclear since he had been searching me everywhere. I didn’t stay with my friend June because it’d be the first place he might come to look for me.I was staying in a motel. I switched off my phone and deleted my social media accounts so he couldn’t trace me. I was broken beyond repair by his indifference. He had no feelings for me, not even an ounce of sympathy for me whereas I wasted my two years in making his life beautiful. I performed all my duties as a wife but he thought I did everything for his money.I was busy dwelling on my next step when my burner other phone rang and it flashed June’s number. I quickly received it.“Hello, June?”“Olivia, there’s something I think you should know.” I heard her saying in a low voice. My heart hammered against my rib cage.“June, what is it? You are scaring me.” I said impatiently.“I think you can come out of your
