CHAPTER 10:

The atmosphere inside the High Council chamber of the Vance estate was thick with centuries of pack authority and corporate power. Long mahogany tables sat arranged in a sweeping arc, occupied by senior elders, elite board members, and corporate attorneys.

I stood beside James at the head table, wearing a dark, double-breasted charcoal suit. Underneath the tailored fabric, my hand briefly rested over my stomach—a quiet, protective reflex I was catching myself doing more frequently now. Beneath my collar, the scent-blocking patch pressed snugly against my skin, neutralizing any trace of the pregnancy pheromones.

James stood beside me, his broad shoulders squared and his sharp silver-gray eyes scanning the room. His comforting scent of smoked cedar and dark tangerine formed an unshakeable shield against the hostile gazes surrounding us.

Across the hall sat Victor Vance—James’s older brother—and Matthew. Matthew’s sweet vanilla scent was rank with anxious anticipation. A few rows behind them sat my stepbrother, Tyla, keeping a modest pose, though his eyes gleamed with spite.

Victor rose from his chair, raising a hand to command the room.

"Elders of the High Council," Victor announced, his practiced voice echoing off the vaulted ceiling. "We convene today to address a severe breach in our family’s corporate stewardship. My son, Matthew, brings forward an urgent motion to freeze and revoke the pending transfer of the Mercer land titles."

"On what grounds, Victor?" the senior council elder asked, leaning forward over his gilded spectacles.

Victor cast a sharp, condescending glance directly at me. "On the grounds that Soren Mercer is an unbonded outsider. He entered this estate under the guise of a temporary corporate retainer, yet he is utilizing Vance capital to clear his family's debts. Allowing core assets to be signed over to an unbonded Omega with no blood ties to our line is a violation of pack governance."

Matthew stepped up beside his father, throwing his shoulders back. "The original land agreement contains a dormant clause, Elders. Without a verified financial clearance, Soren’s claim is legally void. We request an immediate freeze on all transfers and his removal from corporate counsel."

Hushed murmurs broke out across the long table. Several elders nodded along with Victor’s appeal to tradition.

I didn't flinch. I pulled a thin leather portfolio from my briefcase, stepped up to the central podium, and tapped the digital display interface.

"If the Council permits," I said, my voice ringing clear and steady across the silent hall. "I would like to address the matter of 'financial clearance' and the Mercer estate debts."

Victor sneered quietly. Matthew folded his arms with a smug grin. They expected me to panic or hide behind James.

"Go ahead, Mr. Mercer," the senior elder permitted.

I brought up a series of detailed financial ledgers on the Council’s central projection monitors.

"For months, Victor and Matthew Vance have claimed the Mercer estate fell into ruin due to poor internal management," I stated, my tone smooth as glass. "However, a comprehensive forensic corporate audit conducted over the last forty-eight hours reveals a completely different reality."

Matthew’s smug expression faltered.

"These are transaction records from Vance Logistics, directly managed by Matthew Vance," I continued, highlighting a series of red-flagged bank transfers. "Over two million pounds were systematically siphoned out of the Mercer development fund prior to our broken engagement. Matthew didn't inherit a failing estate—he intentionally drained its capital, created an artificial default, and attempted to force my family into bankruptcy so he could seize the land himself."

Gasps erupted around the table. The elders stared at the red figures on the monitors, then snapped their heads toward Matthew, whose face drained of color.

"That's a lie! Those documents are fabricated!" Matthew shouted, slamming his palm onto the table.

"Every transaction is cross-verified by three independent financial auditing firms and certified by the Banking Regulatory Board," I replied smoothly, closing my portfolio with a sharp, decisive snap. "It isn't a default, Elders. It's corporate embezzlement and fraud committed by Matthew Vance against my family."

Victor turned on his son, eyes blazing with fury, but before he could spin the narrative, a heavy, suffocating pressure dropped over the entire chamber.

James stepped forward.

The air in the room plummeted. James’s smoked cedar and dark tangerine scent flared with terrifying Prime Alpha authority, crashing over the high tables like a physical wave. Several younger Alphas in the gallery visibly stiffened, struggling under the weight of his command.

"That is enough," James’s voice boomed—low, resonant, and absolute.

He walked to the podium, placing his hand firmly over my shoulder—a clear, protective declaration that silenced every voice in the room.

"Soren Mercer is not an outsider," James stated, sweeping his icy gaze across the Council. "He holds full power of attorney over the Mercer holdings, and his position is backed directly by my authority as Head of this House."

James locked eyes with Victor and Matthew. "The land transfer is approved, effective immediately. As for the two million pounds stolen from the Mercer accounts... Matthew will forfeit his corporate bonuses and executive dividends until every cent is repaid."

Victor opened his mouth to object, but under the immovable weight of James’s Prime Alpha presence, he swallowed his words and slowly sat back down.

The senior elder cleared his throat, knocking his gavel against the wooden block. "The Council recognizes the validity of the audit. The Mercer land transfer stands ratified. Assembly adjourned."

As the hall cleared out, Matthew and Victor exited through the side doors in bitter silence, with Tyla following closely behind.

I let out a quiet breath, feeling the tension drain from my frame.

James turned to me, his overwhelming aura vanishing completely, replaced by a warm, approving look in his eyes. He reached out, his hand resting gently against the side of my neck—dangerously close to where my scent patch was hidden.

"You were brilliant in there, Soren," James murmured, his voice soft and full of genuine pride. "You completely dismantled them."

"We dismantled them," I corrected softly.

James let out a low chuckle, pulling me slightly closer by the waist. As he did, his head dipped down near my collarbone, his nose catching the subtle air around my neck. He lingered there for a second, his dark brows knitting together in quiet curiosity.

"You know..." James whispered, his warm breath tickling my skin, "even with your scent patch on, every time you take a victory... your scent feels just a little sweeter. Like a sudden, crisp light rain after a storm."

My heart did a sudden, frantic flip against my ribs. I kept my face perfectly calm, resting my hand flat against his chest to maintain a safe distance.

"That's just the feeling of winning, James," I replied smoothly.

He smiled, pressing a soft kiss to my temple, completely oblivious to the tiny secret resting safely behind my suit jacket—a silent truth that would change everything when the time was right.

CHAPTER 22: The numbers came in at market open.I was in James's study when Arthur turned the monitor toward us. A red line ran down the screen like a cut. Vance Enterprises had lost twenty percent in the first hour."It's the story," Arthur said. "Analysts are calling it a governance risk. They think the CEO was deceived by his own husband.""Deceived," James repeated flatly."That's the word on three financial channels."James didn't look at the screen again. He looked at me. "It will recover.""Will it?" I asked."Markets forget." He said it with great calm but his fingers pressed white against the edge of the desk.By noon the loss had grown to twenty-six percent. The board called an emergency meeting and James left for it with his jaw set. He kissed my forehead at the door. I stood in the quiet study afterward and listened to the car pull away.I turned on the television in the sitting room and muted it but the ticker kept crawling beneath the anchors. CHAPTER 21: The headline hit before breakfast.Arthur stood in the dining hall doorway holding a tablet out in both hands. "Sir, you need to see this. Both of you."James took it first. I watched his jaw tighten as he read.MERCER HEIR'S CONTRACT MARRIAGE EXPOSED. WAS THE VANCE HEIR A BUSINESS DEAL?Below it was a scan of our contract with my signature at the bottom, small and neat."Where did they get this?" James asked quietly."The tabloid says an anonymous source," Arthur said. "It came in at five this morning. By six it was everywhere."Everyone in the room looked unsteady. Arthur's hands were perfectly still."Matthew," I said. "It has to be Matthew.""His lawyers have had him since yesterday," James said. "But he could have passed it along before that. Or Tyla could have.""Either of them would have wanted this," Arthur agreed. He took the tablet back gently.I read the article over James's shoulder anyway. It spoke of a cash-strapped Mercer and a billionaire uncle and a marri

CHAPTER 20: Matthew paced behind his desk like a caged animal. His phone buzzed against the floor, and he scooped it up and pressed it to his ear. "Where are you? What happened?" he demanded. "Did you get anything? "He knows, Matthew! He knows everything!" Tyla's voice cracked with terror over the line. "James caught me, and now they're saying Soren is carrying his baby. We're finished! James is going to destroy us! The phone slipped from Matthew's fingers and clattered onto the desk. His face drained of color. Every careful plan he had built was coming apart. Early the next morning, the counter-attack began. The boardroom of Mercer Holdings was glass-walled and silent, the board members stiff in their leather chairs. James walked in first, his presence filling the room. I walked beside him in a sharp, tailored suit, my head held high, one hand resting briefly at my stomach before I let it fall. Arthur followed and laid a copy of the audit files in front of every board

CHAPTER 19: Tyla was still choking on the rug when James called for security. "Get him out of here," James said, his voice low and cold as guards flooded into the library. "If he ever sets foot on this estate again, or if any of you let him through those gates, your employment ends before you hit the ground. Tell him this from me: not even Matthew will be able to save him." Two guards hauled Tyla off the floor by his arms. He was weeping now, too terrified to fight. I listened to his cries echo down the corridor until the front doors swallowed them. The crushing weight of James's aura slowly lifted as the library door clicked shut. I stood frozen near the bookshelf, my hands still hovering over my stomach, my bare neck burning where the patch had been ripped away. Light rain and smoked cedar still hung thick in the air between us. James turned toward me. The rage in his silver eyes melted away, replaced by something raw and tender that I wasn't ready to look at. He took a slow

CHAPTER 18: I found Tyla standing by the tall velvet curtains of the estate library, and my stomach dropped. His clothes were disheveled, his hair wild, his face twisted with a desperate, feverish fury. Somehow he had slipped past the estate's perimeter security. After Matthew's warning to back off, he had clearly stopped listening to anyone."You think you're so clever, don't you, Soren?" Tyla hissed, his voice trembling with venom. "You stole my place. You ruined everything!"I kept my distance, a thick manila folder of audit documents pressed to my chest, my face cold and guarded. "Get out, Tyla. You're trespassing, and if James finds you here—""I don't care about James!" His eyes flashed with wild jealousy. "You took everything that should have been mine!"Before I could move, he lunged, his hands clawing for my collar. His fingers caught the edge of the scent-blocking patch behind my neck, and he tore it from my skin. CHAPTER 17: Holding the sleek silver key fob in my palm, I looked up into James's earnest silver eyes. Every cold, clever line I usually kept ready had vanished. I couldn't find a single reason to refuse him."Thank you, James," I whispered, clutching the key. "I'll... I'll drive it."A quiet breath of relief escaped him. He gave me a small nod and left my bedroom so I could rest. The following morning, I took the matte-gray BMW out for its first spin. The engine purred, and for the first time in months, driving felt liberating rather than terrifying. I parked right outside Charles's cozy bakery, and the scent of fresh bread met me at the door.Charles glanced out the kitchen window, and his eyes went wide at the luxurious car parked out front."Well, well," he grinned, setting down a tray of croissants. "Look who arrived in style! Let me guess, James bought you that beauty?"I sat on a high stool at the counter, twirling the keys around my finger. "He did. He was so worried about ye
