The evening air in the glass conservatory was thick with damp stone and the heavy, sweet scent of night-blooming jasmine.

James was holding a small, quiet gathering in the garden pavilion for a few senior pack elders and high-level investors. I had stepped out into the crisp air with a silver tray of refreshments, wanting to make sure everything was in order and keep an eye on how the family associates carried themselves.

As I walked toward the low marble seating area, conversations tapered off. Several heads turned, eyes trailing over my soft silk shirt, unbuttoned collar, and quiet posture.

Ivan, a notorious property tycoon and long-time business associate of James, leaned back into his leather chair, slowly swirling amber liquor in his crystal glass. A lazy, condescending smirk touched his lips.

"Well, look at this, James," Ivan drawled, his gaze sliding over me with mild amusement. "Who's the pretty little Omega? Serving drinks out in your private garden? Is this your new toy while Matthew is out of the picture?"

The temperature in the pavilion plummeted instantly.

Before Ivan could even raise his glass to his mouth, James’s heavy scent of smoked cedar and dark tangerine spiked with violent, suffocating pressure. James set his glass down on the marble table with a sharp, heavy clack that froze everyone in their seats.

"Watch your mouth, Ivan," James said, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying rumble that made the ice in the buckets rattle. "Soren is not a toy. He is my partner, and you will address him with respect in my home."

Ivan’s face went pale, the smug look draining out of his eyes as he swallowed hard under the raw weight of James's Prime Alpha aura.

James turned to me, the harsh edge in his silver eyes melting away in an instant. He reached out, taking my wrist gently, and pulled me down to sit beside him on the deep leather sofa—completely surrounding me with his warmth.

"You don't need to serve anyone here, Soren," James murmured close to my ear, his hand settling comfortably over my waist. "Just sit with me."

He picked up a small crystal glass filled with a high-grade, aged whiskey and offered it to me, trying to help me relax after a long, tense day. "Here. Take a sip."

Not wanting to make a scene in front of his guests, I took the glass and drank a generous gulp.

What James didn't know was that I rarely ever touched hard alcohol. The heavy whiskey hit my empty stomach like a hot spark. Within ten minutes, my head was swimming in a sweet, foggy haze. A deep flush spread across my cheeks, and my body began running unnaturally hot.

The sheer exhaustion from the past few days, mixed with the sudden shock of alcohol, completely threw my system off balance—triggering a sudden, unexpected heat cycle right there in the open air.

The sharp, clean scent of rain and ozone began leaking from my scent glands in hot, frantic waves.

James’s head snapped toward me instantly. He caught it before anyone else could—the unmistakable, intoxicating scent of an Omega going into heat.

"Excuse us," James growled toward the table, standing up in a single fluid motion. Before the elders could even register what was happening, James scooped me up into his arms, using his broad frame to block me completely from their sight, and carried me swiftly out of the garden into the quiet hallways of the house.

The Corridor & Master Suite

As we reached the secluded corridor near the master suite, my vision was blurring at the edges, my skin feeling like it was on fire against the cool night draft.

"James..." I whimpered, burying my face straight into the crook of his neck, my fingers desperately clutching the lapels of his suit jacket. "It burns..."

I pressed feverish, disorganized kisses along his jawline, biting softly at his collar, completely overtaken by the sudden spike of fever and whiskey.

James let out a low, ragged groan. He pinned me gently against the wall, his large hands locking around my hips. His veins stood out against his neck, his silver eyes dark with an intense Prime Alpha urge to take what was right in front of him.

"Soren, look at me," James rasped, his voice trembling as he forced himself to pull his face back. Sweat beaded along his temple as he fought against his own deepest instincts. "You're tipsy, and the drink triggered your heat. I am not doing this with you right now."

"I want you!" Hot, frustrated tears spilled down my flushed cheeks as I tried to pull his head back down. "Why are you pushing me away?!"

"Because I want you so badly it's driving me insane!" James snapped softly, his voice raw and unscripted. He cupped both sides of my burning face, his large hands shaking against my skin. "I’ve wanted you from the second you walked into my life! But I am not taking advantage of you when your head is clouded by whiskey and a sudden fever. I want your heart, Soren. I want you to look at me with clear eyes when you give yourself to me—not because a drink forced your hand!"

The words hit me through the heat like a cold splash of water. The fierce, absolute sincerity in his voice shattered every lingering doubt Matthew had ever built in me.

Without saying another word, James lifted me back into his arms and carried me into the master bedroom. He laid me down on the wide bed, pulled the soft duvet over my shoulders, and turned the air cooling system on high.

When he turned around to grab a cool cloth, I reached out from under the blanket and caught his wrist. "Don't go... please stay."

James let out a long, shuddering breath. He kicked off his shoes and slid onto the bed beside me, pulling me over the blanket flush against his warm chest. He wrapped his arms around me tight, resting his chin on top of my head, letting his heavy, grounding cedar scent blanket the room until the worst of my fever shakes began to quiet down.

"I'm right here," James murmured softly into my hair, his lips pressing a lingering kiss to my forehead while his heart pounded heavily against my cheek. "I'm not going anywhere. Just rest."

Wrapped in the arms of an Alpha who cared enough to protect me even from my own body, my breathing finally evened out, the wild fever settling into a safe, quiet warmth.

CHAPTER 22: The numbers came in at market open.I was in James's study when Arthur turned the monitor toward us. A red line ran down the screen like a cut. Vance Enterprises had lost twenty percent in the first hour."It's the story," Arthur said. "Analysts are calling it a governance risk. They think the CEO was deceived by his own husband.""Deceived," James repeated flatly."That's the word on three financial channels."James didn't look at the screen again. He looked at me. "It will recover.""Will it?" I asked."Markets forget." He said it with great calm but his fingers pressed white against the edge of the desk.By noon the loss had grown to twenty-six percent. The board called an emergency meeting and James left for it with his jaw set. He kissed my forehead at the door. I stood in the quiet study afterward and listened to the car pull away.I turned on the television in the sitting room and muted it but the ticker kept crawling beneath the anchors. CHAPTER 21: The headline hit before breakfast.Arthur stood in the dining hall doorway holding a tablet out in both hands. "Sir, you need to see this. Both of you."James took it first. I watched his jaw tighten as he read.MERCER HEIR'S CONTRACT MARRIAGE EXPOSED. WAS THE VANCE HEIR A BUSINESS DEAL?Below it was a scan of our contract with my signature at the bottom, small and neat."Where did they get this?" James asked quietly."The tabloid says an anonymous source," Arthur said. "It came in at five this morning. By six it was everywhere."Everyone in the room looked unsteady. Arthur's hands were perfectly still."Matthew," I said. "It has to be Matthew.""His lawyers have had him since yesterday," James said. "But he could have passed it along before that. Or Tyla could have.""Either of them would have wanted this," Arthur agreed. He took the tablet back gently.I read the article over James's shoulder anyway. It spoke of a cash-strapped Mercer and a billionaire uncle and a marri

CHAPTER 20: Matthew paced behind his desk like a caged animal. His phone buzzed against the floor, and he scooped it up and pressed it to his ear. "Where are you? What happened?" he demanded. "Did you get anything? "He knows, Matthew! He knows everything!" Tyla's voice cracked with terror over the line. "James caught me, and now they're saying Soren is carrying his baby. We're finished! James is going to destroy us! The phone slipped from Matthew's fingers and clattered onto the desk. His face drained of color. Every careful plan he had built was coming apart. Early the next morning, the counter-attack began. The boardroom of Mercer Holdings was glass-walled and silent, the board members stiff in their leather chairs. James walked in first, his presence filling the room. I walked beside him in a sharp, tailored suit, my head held high, one hand resting briefly at my stomach before I let it fall. Arthur followed and laid a copy of the audit files in front of every board

CHAPTER 19: Tyla was still choking on the rug when James called for security. "Get him out of here," James said, his voice low and cold as guards flooded into the library. "If he ever sets foot on this estate again, or if any of you let him through those gates, your employment ends before you hit the ground. Tell him this from me: not even Matthew will be able to save him." Two guards hauled Tyla off the floor by his arms. He was weeping now, too terrified to fight. I listened to his cries echo down the corridor until the front doors swallowed them. The crushing weight of James's aura slowly lifted as the library door clicked shut. I stood frozen near the bookshelf, my hands still hovering over my stomach, my bare neck burning where the patch had been ripped away. Light rain and smoked cedar still hung thick in the air between us. James turned toward me. The rage in his silver eyes melted away, replaced by something raw and tender that I wasn't ready to look at. He took a slow

CHAPTER 18: I found Tyla standing by the tall velvet curtains of the estate library, and my stomach dropped. His clothes were disheveled, his hair wild, his face twisted with a desperate, feverish fury. Somehow he had slipped past the estate's perimeter security. After Matthew's warning to back off, he had clearly stopped listening to anyone."You think you're so clever, don't you, Soren?" Tyla hissed, his voice trembling with venom. "You stole my place. You ruined everything!"I kept my distance, a thick manila folder of audit documents pressed to my chest, my face cold and guarded. "Get out, Tyla. You're trespassing, and if James finds you here—""I don't care about James!" His eyes flashed with wild jealousy. "You took everything that should have been mine!"Before I could move, he lunged, his hands clawing for my collar. His fingers caught the edge of the scent-blocking patch behind my neck, and he tore it from my skin. CHAPTER 17: Holding the sleek silver key fob in my palm, I looked up into James's earnest silver eyes. Every cold, clever line I usually kept ready had vanished. I couldn't find a single reason to refuse him."Thank you, James," I whispered, clutching the key. "I'll... I'll drive it."A quiet breath of relief escaped him. He gave me a small nod and left my bedroom so I could rest. The following morning, I took the matte-gray BMW out for its first spin. The engine purred, and for the first time in months, driving felt liberating rather than terrifying. I parked right outside Charles's cozy bakery, and the scent of fresh bread met me at the door.Charles glanced out the kitchen window, and his eyes went wide at the luxurious car parked out front."Well, well," he grinned, setting down a tray of croissants. "Look who arrived in style! Let me guess, James bought you that beauty?"I sat on a high stool at the counter, twirling the keys around my finger. "He did. He was so worried about ye
