CHAPTER 5: THE THRESHOLD

The heavy iron gates of the Vance estate moved with a silent, heavy precision as they swung open.

I sat in the passenger seat of James’s black Maybach, watching the rain blur the streetlights outside. Less than forty-eight hours ago, I had walked down this very driveway in a cab, my heart shattered into pieces and my suit soaked through with cold water. Now, I was riding back through those same gates, sitting right beside the man who owned every inch of the land.

James didn't say a word as the car glided up the long, winding drive. His scent—smoked cedar and dark tangerine—filled the leather interior, completely grounding the nervous edge in my stomach.

The car stopped before the main stairs. The driver hurried around to open my door, holding a large black umbrella over my head as I stepped out onto the wet gravel.

I looked up at the stone manor. Warm light glowed from every window, making it look inviting, but I knew better. Inside was a nest of vipers. Matthew was in there. Tyla was in there too, living in the guest quarters I used to manage.

"Anxious?" James’s deep voice rumbled behind me.

I fixed my cuffs, straightened my back, and kept my head high. "No. I'm ready."

I felt his broad hand rest against the small of my back—not pushing me, just guiding me forward. His palm radiated heat through my coat, a quiet, reassuring weight.

We walked up the wide stone steps together. The double mahogany doors were pulled open by the head butler, a silver-haired Beta who bowed deeply the second he recognized James.

"Good evening, Mr. Vance," the butler said respectfully. Then his gaze shifted over to me, his eyes widening in subtle shock. "Mr. Soren? We were told—"

"Soren is staying in the master suite with me from now on, Marcus," James cut in, his tone smooth, cold, and final. "Bring his luggage upstairs immediately and have the kitchen prepare dinner for two."

"Of course, sir. Right away," Marcus stammered, bowing again before hurrying down the hall.

We stepped into the main foyer. High ceilings and marble floors echoed with every step we took. I looked up at the grand spiral staircase, remembering the exact moment I had walked down those steps two nights ago after catching Matthew and Tyla together.

Before we could reach the stairs, a furious, disheveled voice echoed from the upper landing.

"Uncle James?! What the hell is going on?!"

I stopped.

Matthew came hurrying down the marble stairs, his dark hair messy and his silk shirt unbuttoned at the throat. A chaotic, sour wave of vanilla scent flared up around him. He looked ragged, dark circles lingering under his eyes from the fallout of his ruined engagement party.

"Marcus said you brought—" Matthew froze mid-step, five stairs from the bottom. His eyes widened in disbelief as he looked at me standing beside his uncle. His jaw dropped.

"Soren?" Matthew gasped, his voice cracking. He took the remaining steps two at a time, heading straight toward us. "Where the hell have you been?! Do you have any idea what happened after you ran off on Saturday?! My mother was humiliated! The elders were asking questions! Where were you?!"

He reached out a hand, intending to grab my wrist.

Before his fingers could even touch my sleeve, James stepped smoothly into his path. The movement was effortless, like a shadow shifting across the floor. James stood between us, his broad shoulders completely blocking Matthew from my sight.

"Watch your tone, Matthew," James said, his voice dropping into a low growl that vibrated through the high walls of the foyer.

Matthew flinched, taking an instinctive step back, but his eyes were bloodshot, full of frantic pride and wild frustration. "Uncle... what is he doing here? Why are you bringing my fiancé into your house?"

"He isn't your fiancé anymore, Matthew," I said, stepping out from behind James’s shoulder to look him dead in the eye.

Matthew’s gaze snapped to mine, filled with confused anger. "Soren, don't do this! I know you're upset about... about whatever you think you saw. But we can talk in private. You belong with me!"

"I left my engagement ring on the console table outside your bedroom door, Matthew," I said, my voice smooth, clear, and quiet. "Along with the watch I spent six months tracking down for you. Did you find them... or was Tyla still wearing your sheets when you noticed?"

Matthew’s face drained of color. "You... you were..."

"I heard every word," I said softly. "Plain rain. Boring. Lifeless. That's what you called me, isn't it?"

"Soren, shut up! It wasn't like that!" Matthew snapped, his control completely breaking.

The humiliation, the pressure of the pack elders, and the sight of me standing beside his uncle pushed him past the brink. Driven by blind Alpha rage, Matthew's sweet vanilla pheromones suddenly twisted into a sharp, poisonous reek. His posture flared, his eyes flashing amber as he pushed past James, raising a hand to grab me by the throat and force me to my knees.

"You're mine! You don't get to walk away from me!" Matthew roared, hurling his full Alpha aura straight at me to force my instinct to submit.

The wave of hostile pheromones hit like a physical punch, but before I could even brace myself, the entire room went pitch black with pressure.

An absolute, terrifying wave of smoked cedar and bitter dark tangerine erupted from James, hitting the foyer like a localized hurricane. The air density instantly spiked, suffocating and lethal.

Matthew’s aggressive aura wasn't just blocked—it was utterly crushed into non-existence within a split second.

"Ah—ghk!" Matthew gasped, his advance cut short in mid-stride.

James didn't even raise a hand. He simply turned his head, his silver eyes flashing with a predatory, lethal Prime Alpha glow as he released a fraction of his true dominance.

The raw pheromone pressure hit Matthew like an invisible sledgehammer to the chest. The floor tiles rattled beneath our boots. Matthew choked, his knees buckling outward as the sheer force of James's scent compressed the air in his lungs.

"U-Uncle... please..." Matthew gasped, clutching his throat, his face flushing crimson, then deathly pale as he collapsed onto both knees right onto the cold marble floor.

He was trembling violently, sweating through his shirt, completely pinned to the ground under the unbearable weight of James's pheromone suppression. He couldn't raise his head; he couldn't even draw a proper breath. His vanilla scent was utterly choked out, replaced entirely by the dominant, suffocating smell of burnt cedar and orange peel.

"You dare raise a hand in front of me?" James said, his voice dropping to a terrifying frequency that vibrated straight through the floorboards and made the crystal chandelier above us hum. "You dare flex your pathetic aura against my partner?"

Matthew whimpered, pressed flat against the stone, his fingers clutching at the marble floor just to keep from blacking out under the pressure.

"James," I whispered softly, touching his forearm.

The moment my fingers made contact with his coat, the suffocating pressure eased just enough for Matthew to gasp in a lungful of ragged air, coughing hysterically on the floor.

James slowly reached into his coat pocket, pulled out the signed corporate contract, and tossed it onto the floor right in front of Matthew's trembling face.

"Soren’s family estate is under my personal protection now," James stated, looking down at his kneeling nephew with icy disdain. "The bailout contract has been executed. Furthermore, Soren has accepted my proposal."

Matthew stared at the paper through tear-filled eyes, gasping for breath. "Your... your proposal?"

James took my left hand in his and gently slid a heavy, dark platinum band onto my ring finger. The metal settled cool against my skin, and as it locked into place, James allowed a warm, protective trail of cedar scent to wrap around me, marking me clearly as off-limits to the entire world.

Matthew looked at the ring, then at my face, a broken groan escaping his chest as the reality crushed what was left of his pride.

"You threw him away, Matthew," James said, his silver eyes cold and unbothered. "And in this family, when you attempt to strike what is mine, you learn your place real fast."

A soft gasp echoed from the top of the stairs.

We all looked up.

Tyla was standing near the landing, wrapped in one of Matthew’s oversized silk robes, clutching the railing in absolute terror as he witnessed Matthew begging for air on the floor.

I looked up at my half-brother and gave him a calm, polite smile—the exact same empty smile I used to reserve for high-society banquets.

"Good evening, Tyla," I called up quietly, my voice carrying effortlessly through the silenced hall. "Don't get up on my account. You and Matthew are free to stay in the west wing... as long as you remember whose house this is now."

Arthur's hands were perfectly still."Matthew," I said. "It has to be Matthew.""His lawyers have had him since yesterday," James said. "But he could have passed it along before that. Or Tyla could have.""Either of them would have wanted this," Arthur agreed. He took the tablet back gently.I read the article over James's shoulder anyway. CHAPTER 20: Matthew paced behind his desk like a caged animal. His phone buzzed against the floor, and he scooped it up and pressed it to his ear. "Where are you? What happened?" he demanded. "Did you get anything? "He knows, Matthew! He knows everything!" Tyla's voice cracked with terror over the line. "James caught me, and now they're saying Soren is carrying his baby. We're finished! James is going to destroy us! The phone slipped from Matthew's fingers and clattered onto the desk. His face drained of color. Every careful plan he had built was coming apart. Early the next morning, the counter-attack began. The boardroom of Mercer Holdings was glass-walled and silent, the board members stiff in their leather chairs. James walked in first, his presence filling the room. I walked beside him in a sharp, tailored suit, my head held high, one hand resting briefly at my stomach before I let it fall. Arthur followed and laid a copy of the audit files in front of every board

CHAPTER 19: Tyla was still choking on the rug when James called for security. "Get him out of here," James said, his voice low and cold as guards flooded into the library. "If he ever sets foot on this estate again, or if any of you let him through those gates, your employment ends before you hit the ground. Tell him this from me: not even Matthew will be able to save him." Two guards hauled Tyla off the floor by his arms. He was weeping now, too terrified to fight. I listened to his cries echo down the corridor until the front doors swallowed them. The crushing weight of James's aura slowly lifted as the library door clicked shut. I stood frozen near the bookshelf, my hands still hovering over my stomach, my bare neck burning where the patch had been ripped away. Light rain and smoked cedar still hung thick in the air between us. James turned toward me. The rage in his silver eyes melted away, replaced by something raw and tender that I wasn't ready to look at. He took a slow

Tyla hissed, his voice trembling with venom. "You stole my place. You ruined everything!"I kept my distance, a thick manila folder of audit documents pressed to my chest, my face cold and guarded.
