CHAPTER 6: THE MASTER SUITE

The heavy oak doors of the master suite shut with a quiet, solid thud, sealing us off from the rest of the mansion and the lingering, sour stench of Matthew’s panicked defeat.

The suite was expansive, lined with floor-to-ceiling windows that looked out over the rain-slicked gardens of the estate. High ceilings, exposed dark timber, and a king-sized bed wrapped in deep charcoal linens dominated the space. Unlike the polished marble of the foyer, this room was saturated with James. The scent of smoked cedar and bitter dark tangerine was so dense here it felt warm, almost tangible against my skin.

I stood near the foot of the bed, my leather suitcase resting beside my boots. I kept my hands in the pockets of my white suit jacket, my thumb tracing the smooth, heavy edge of the dark platinum band resting on my left hand.

"You can take the jacket off," James said, stepping into the room behind me.

He unbuttoned his coat, slid it off his broad shoulders, and hung it over the back of an armchair. Next came his tie, which he loosened with a slow, deliberate flex of his fingers, undoing the top collar button of his shirt. Without the full armor of his suit, his frame was even more imposing—broad chest, sharp jawline, and silver eyes that tracked every rise and fall of my breath.

"I'm fine," I replied, keeping my posture straight.

James walked over to the dark wood sideboard, poured two fingers of amber whiskey into a short glass, and took a slow sip. "You didn't flinch down there," he observed, his voice low and gravelly. "Not when Matthew lunged, and certainly not when your half-brother watched from the stairs."

"I spent three years playing the quiet, submissive Omega because I thought that's what was expected of me," I said, meeting his gaze across the warm light of the room. "I'm done hiding."

"Good," James said softly. He set the glass down and turned to face me fully. "Because in this house, you don't bow to anyone. Not to Matthew, not to your father, and certainly not to the pack council."

He crossed the room with slow, deliberate steps, stopping just close enough that I could feel the heat radiating off his body. He didn't touch me, but his silver eyes dropped to my throat, where the cream silk shirt remained buttoned tightly.

"The scent-blocker is wearing off," James murmured, a spark igniting in his eyes. "I can smell the rain under the collar."

My pulse hit my ribs harder, a sudden spike of heat pooling in my chest. The instinct to step back—to guard myself against being overwhelmed—warred with the grounding, possessive stability of his presence.

"We need to establish ground rules, James," I said, keeping my voice steady. "This is a contract. A partnership to tear down the people who tried to destroy me."

James tilted his head, a dangerous smirk touching his lips. "Is that all this is to you, Soren? Just ink on a page?"

"It has to start there," I said, looking straight up into his eyes. "I just walked out on a man I spent three years building a life with. I won't be a trophy, and I won't be controlled."

The silence in the room stretched thin, heavy with the electric tension between us. Then James reached out, his long fingers catching the collar of my white jacket and sliding it off my shoulders in one smooth, unhurried motion. He didn't force it; he simply took the weight off me and set it aside.

"I don't need a trophy, little storm," James whispered, leaning down until his dark tangerine scent brushed my cheek. "And I don't control my equals. But make no mistake—you signed my contract, you wear my ring, and you share my quarters. Whatever ignited between us on Saturday night doesn't vanish just because we put official signatures on an agreement."

He gestured toward the far side of the room, where a frosted glass door revealed a massive bathroom with a stone soaking tub and fresh linens.

"Take a warm shower," James said gently, his low Alpha tone carrying a natural authority that sent a quiet shiver down my spine. "Wash off the rain and the city. When you come out, we sit down and map out exactly how we strip Matthew of his corporate succession rights at the board meeting on Thursday."

I looked at him for a long moment, feeling the cold wall around my chest give way just a fraction under his steady, unyielding focus.

"Thursday," I agreed softly.

I turned and walked toward the bathroom, but as my hand touched the frosted handle, I paused and looked back over my shoulder. James was still standing by the chair, watching me with those sharp silver eyes, his thumb resting over the lapel where my jacket lay.

"And James?" I added smoothly.

"Yeah?"

"Don't call me 'little storm' when Matthew is within earshot," I said, a faint, sharp glint returning to my eyes. "Save that for when the doors are closed."

A low, genuine laugh pulled from James’s chest—a sound so rich it seemed to settle the air in the room.

"Understood, partner," he murmured.

I closed the door behind me, leaned back against the cool glass, and finally let out the long breath I had been holding all evening. For the first time in years, I wasn't running or bowing down. I was standing right where I chose to be.

CHAPTER 22: The numbers came in at market open.I was in James's study when Arthur turned the monitor toward us. A red line ran down the screen like a cut. Vance Enterprises had lost twenty percent in the first hour."It's the story," Arthur said. "Analysts are calling it a governance risk. They think the CEO was deceived by his own husband.""Deceived," James repeated flatly."That's the word on three financial channels."James didn't look at the screen again. He looked at me. "It will recover.""Will it?" I asked."Markets forget." He said it with great calm but his fingers pressed white against the edge of the desk.By noon the loss had grown to twenty-six percent. The board called an emergency meeting and James left for it with his jaw set. He kissed my forehead at the door. I stood in the quiet study afterward and listened to the car pull away.I turned on the television in the sitting room and muted it but the ticker kept crawling beneath the anchors. CHAPTER 21: The headline hit before breakfast.Arthur stood in the dining hall doorway holding a tablet out in both hands. "Sir, you need to see this. Both of you."James took it first. I watched his jaw tighten as he read.MERCER HEIR'S CONTRACT MARRIAGE EXPOSED. WAS THE VANCE HEIR A BUSINESS DEAL?Below it was a scan of our contract with my signature at the bottom, small and neat."Where did they get this?" James asked quietly."The tabloid says an anonymous source," Arthur said. "It came in at five this morning. By six it was everywhere."Everyone in the room looked unsteady. Arthur's hands were perfectly still."Matthew," I said. "It has to be Matthew.""His lawyers have had him since yesterday," James said. "But he could have passed it along before that. Or Tyla could have.""Either of them would have wanted this," Arthur agreed. He took the tablet back gently.I read the article over James's shoulder anyway. It spoke of a cash-strapped Mercer and a billionaire uncle and a marri

CHAPTER 20: Matthew paced behind his desk like a caged animal. His phone buzzed against the floor, and he scooped it up and pressed it to his ear. "Where are you? What happened?" he demanded. "Did you get anything? "He knows, Matthew! He knows everything!" Tyla's voice cracked with terror over the line. "James caught me, and now they're saying Soren is carrying his baby. We're finished! James is going to destroy us! The phone slipped from Matthew's fingers and clattered onto the desk. His face drained of color. Every careful plan he had built was coming apart. Early the next morning, the counter-attack began. The boardroom of Mercer Holdings was glass-walled and silent, the board members stiff in their leather chairs. James walked in first, his presence filling the room. I walked beside him in a sharp, tailored suit, my head held high, one hand resting briefly at my stomach before I let it fall. Arthur followed and laid a copy of the audit files in front of every board

CHAPTER 19: Tyla was still choking on the rug when James called for security. "Get him out of here," James said, his voice low and cold as guards flooded into the library. "If he ever sets foot on this estate again, or if any of you let him through those gates, your employment ends before you hit the ground. Tell him this from me: not even Matthew will be able to save him." Two guards hauled Tyla off the floor by his arms. He was weeping now, too terrified to fight. I listened to his cries echo down the corridor until the front doors swallowed them. The crushing weight of James's aura slowly lifted as the library door clicked shut. I stood frozen near the bookshelf, my hands still hovering over my stomach, my bare neck burning where the patch had been ripped away. Light rain and smoked cedar still hung thick in the air between us. James turned toward me. The rage in his silver eyes melted away, replaced by something raw and tender that I wasn't ready to look at. He took a slow

CHAPTER 18: I found Tyla standing by the tall velvet curtains of the estate library, and my stomach dropped. His clothes were disheveled, his hair wild, his face twisted with a desperate, feverish fury. Somehow he had slipped past the estate's perimeter security. After Matthew's warning to back off, he had clearly stopped listening to anyone."You think you're so clever, don't you, Soren?" Tyla hissed, his voice trembling with venom. "You stole my place. You ruined everything!"I kept my distance, a thick manila folder of audit documents pressed to my chest, my face cold and guarded. "Get out, Tyla. You're trespassing, and if James finds you here—""I don't care about James!" His eyes flashed with wild jealousy. "You took everything that should have been mine!"Before I could move, he lunged, his hands clawing for my collar. His fingers caught the edge of the scent-blocking patch behind my neck, and he tore it from my skin. CHAPTER 17: Holding the sleek silver key fob in my palm, I looked up into James's earnest silver eyes. Every cold, clever line I usually kept ready had vanished. I couldn't find a single reason to refuse him."Thank you, James," I whispered, clutching the key. "I'll... I'll drive it."A quiet breath of relief escaped him. He gave me a small nod and left my bedroom so I could rest. The following morning, I took the matte-gray BMW out for its first spin. The engine purred, and for the first time in months, driving felt liberating rather than terrifying. I parked right outside Charles's cozy bakery, and the scent of fresh bread met me at the door.Charles glanced out the kitchen window, and his eyes went wide at the luxurious car parked out front."Well, well," he grinned, setting down a tray of croissants. "Look who arrived in style! Let me guess, James bought you that beauty?"I sat on a high stool at the counter, twirling the keys around my finger. "He did. He was so worried about ye
