I walked into the throne room knowing one of them was about to die by my words.

The air felt heavy with perfume and fear. Nobles stood in neat rows pretending loyalty while their eyes darted like rats. Selene sat near the side, smiling that soft fake smile of hers. Kairos sat on the high seat, dark and still, watching everything. I kept my steps light, my face soft, the perfect young queen who still blushed at attention.

A lord named Theron stepped forward first. He always did. He bowed too low and spoke too smooth.

“My emperor, my queen, the harvest reports from the western lands show… unexpected losses. I fear the people grow restless under the new changes.”

I tilted my head. “Unexpected losses, Lord Theron? Or carefully planned ones?”

His smile froze. “I… do not understand, my queen.”

“You understand perfectly.” I kept my voice gentle, almost kind. “Three nights ago you met with two of Selene’s servants near the old wine cellars. You spoke of moving grain stores so the western villages would starve just enough to blame the new queen. You said my presence weakened the empire. Did I hear that wrong?”

Silence slammed into the room.

Theron’s face drained of color. “Who told you such lies?”

Kairos’s voice cut through the quiet like a blade. “Answer her.”

Theron stammered. “My emperor, these are dangerous accusations. The queen is young. Perhaps she misunderstood court talk.”

I stepped closer. “I misunderstood nothing. You called me a pretty alliance piece that would not last the year. You said once the people turned hungry, Kairos would set me aside. You even named the day you planned to start the rumors. Shall I repeat the exact words?”

Selene’s smile never moved, but her fingers tightened on her dress.

Kairos rose slowly. “Theron. Is this true?”

The lord dropped to his knees. “My emperor, I only… I only wished to protect the throne. The queen is untested. The people—”

“The people will eat because I say so,” Kairos growled. “And my queen is not untested. She just proved she hears more than any of you. Guards. Take him.”

Two soldiers dragged Theron away while he still begged. The court stayed frozen. I kept my face calm even though my heart hammered. One more small thread cut. One more step away from the death I once suffered.

Kairos looked at me across the room. His eyes were dark and burning. “Court is dismissed. Everyone out. Now.”

They scattered like birds. Selene left last, her gaze sliding over me with quiet poison.

When the doors closed, Kairos came down the steps fast. He stopped right in front of me.

“How did you know?”

I lowered my eyes. “I listen. People talk when they think the new bride is too soft to understand.”

“Do not play shy with me.” His hand caught my chin, forcing my face up. “You walked in here and cut him open with words I never taught you. Something is different about you, Aria. I feel it every time I touch you.”

My pulse jumped. “The bonding changed me. You said it yourself. The old magic sits under my skin now.”

“That is not all of it.” His thumb brushed my lower lip. “You look at me like you already know what I will do next. It should frighten me. Instead it makes me want to keep you closer.”

I swallowed. “Then keep me closer.”

His eyes flashed. “Tonight. No court. No servants. Only the ritual. I need to feel you under it again.”

The rest of the day passed in a blur of forced smiles and quiet orders. Outside the walls, low rumbles started. Servants whispered that the outer stone had begun to crack. I heard them but said nothing. The cosmic force was waking earlier than before. I needed more time.

Night came heavy and hot. Kairos dismissed every guard from our wing. The moment the last door shut, he turned on me.

“Come here.”

I walked to him slowly. He pulled me against his chest, one hand fisted in my hair, the other locked at my waist.

“You exposed a traitor in front of the entire court and barely blinked,” he said against my ear. “Do you have any idea how that looked? How it felt to watch you?”

“I only wanted to protect us.”

“Us.” He laughed once, low and dark. “You say that word like it already belongs to you. Say it again.”

“Us,” I whispered.

His mouth found my neck. “Again.”

“Us, Kairos.”

He walked me backward until my spine hit the tall post near the bed. His hands worked the ties of my dress with impatient strength.

“The ritual tonight will go deeper,” he said. “I will mark you again. Stronger. So every person in this empire feels you are mine even when I am not in the room. Do you understand?”

My breath shook. “I understand.”

“Do you want it?”

I met his eyes. The truth and the lie mixed until I could not separate them. “Yes.”

He began the ancient words. The air thickened. Heat slid under my skin like liquid fire. His fingers traced the old symbols over my collarbone, my ribs, the soft place below my heart. Every touch pulled a soft sound from my throat that I could not stop.

“You burn for me,” he murmured. “I feel it. Tell me you feel it too.”

“I feel it.” My voice came out rough. “It is too much sometimes.”

“Good.” His forehead pressed to mine. “I want it to be too much. I want you to forget every other name but mine.”

The ritual rose higher. Magic and want tangled until I could barely stand. Kairos held me up, mouth at my throat, voice still speaking the binding words. When it finally peaked, I gasped and clutched his shoulders. He held me through it, breathing hard against my skin.

Afterward we stayed locked together for a long time. His hand stroked slow circles on my back.

“Something is coming,” he said quietly. “The walls crack. The sky splits. I will not lose you to it. Whatever this power is inside you, we will use it together. No more secrets. Promise me.”

I pressed my face to his chest so he could not see my eyes. “I promise.”

He kissed the top of my head and finally let me go. “Rest. I must speak with the generals about the outer walls.”

When he left, the room felt too large. I walked to the small table near the window to pour water. A folded letter sat under the jug. It had not been there earlier.

My hands shook as I opened it.

The handwriting was careful and unknown.

“We know you are not the same bride who arrived. The fire in your blood is not from the ritual alone. Keep hiding and we will expose you. Or come to the old temple at midnight three nights from now and learn who else remembers the queen who burned.”

No signature.

I read it twice. My pulse roared in my ears. Someone in the palace already knew. Someone watched me closer than Kairos did.

Outside, a deep crack split the night. Stone groaned. Somewhere far off a section of the outer wall gave way with a low thunder.

I crushed the letter in my fist and stared at the dark window.

Three nights.

Whoever wrote this already held a knife at my second life.

And I still did not know if Kairos would stand with me or against me when the truth finally tore free.

I set the trap knowing it might cost me Kairos’s trust all over again.Varen met me in the lower corridor just after the second bell. His face was grim.“He took the bait,” he said. “General Rhelan left the eastern barracks twenty minutes ago. He is heading for the old wine cellars exactly like the message promised.”“You are sure no one followed him?”“I am sure. My men are watching the other exits. If this goes wrong we both burn for it.”“Then it will not go wrong.”We moved quickly through the servant passages. The cellars smelled of damp stone and old oak. A single oil lamp burned near the far wall. General Rhelan stood there with his back to us, speaking in a low voice to a shadow that was not a person.“She is getting harder to reach,” he said. “The emperor keeps her too close. If we wait much longer the rifts will take the city before we can feed them.”I stepped into the light. “Looking for me, General?”He spun. His hand went to his sword. Varen was already behind him with a

Selene walked back into the throne room like she owned the air we breathed. The court had gathered after the worst of the night attack. Smoke still clung to clothes and hair. People looked exhausted and afraid. I stood at Kairos’s side on the raised platform, my hand resting lightly on the arm of his chair. Every muscle in my body stayed tight. The doors opened. Selene entered alone. She looked different. Her skin held a faint dark shimmer, like something under it was moving. Her eyes glowed with the same wrong light I had seen in the creatures.Whispers started immediately.Kairos rose slowly. “You disappeared during the attack. Explain yourself.”Selene smiled. It did not reach her eyes. “I was working to save this empire, my emperor. I found a way to close one of the smaller rifts. The one threatening the eastern farms.”“Speak clearly.”“The rift responds to phoenix blood.” Her gaze slid to me and stayed there. “Her blood. A small amount would be enough. I can perform the sealing

The capital was already screaming when we rode through the gates.Smoke rose from the outer districts in thick black columns. Bells rang without stopping. People ran through the streets with children clutched in their arms and whatever they could carry. I kept close to Kairos as we pushed through the chaos toward the main wall. His face was set like stone but his hand stayed locked around mine until we reached the base of the stairs.A captain met us there, face streaked with dirt and blood, breathing hard.“My emperor, they hit the eastern section first. The creatures are climbing the walls. We are losing men too fast.”Kairos’s voice came out hard and flat. “How many breaches?”“Two small ones so far. We sealed them but more are coming. The main force is still approaching from the west.”I stepped forw

  • CLAIMED BY THE ALPHA HEIR   Chapter ten: I chose the battlefield

I chose the war over his order and I would do it again without hesitation. The sky was still dark when I left the palace. I wore a plain soldier’s cloak and boots that were too big. A thin veil of phoenix fire wrapped around me so eyes slid past without stopping. I joined the middle of the marching column where dust and the noise of armor covered every small sound. Kairos rode far ahead. Even from that distance I could see the straight line of his back and the way he held the reins like he already knew the day would turn bloody. He believed I was safe behind high walls. That belief was the only reason I could slip away. The march stretched on. My legs burned. My heart refused to quiet. I kept the veil steady and my head down while soldiers around me complained about the early hour and the weight of their packs. None of them looked at me twice.Near midday a scout came galloping back so hard his horse

I could still feel the blade coming down every time he touched me.Morning light spilled across the bed but I had not slept. The vision from the night before sat behind my eyes like a brand. Kairos raising a sword. My own blood on the floor. His face above me. I kept my breathing even when he stirred beside me and reached for my waist.“You are quiet,” he said against my shoulder. “Too quiet.”I forced a soft smile and turned toward him. “Just tired. The dinner. Selene. Everything.”His hand slid up my side. “You pulled away from me last night. Twice. I felt it.”“I did not mean to.”“Yes you did.” He sat up and looked down at me. His voice stayed low but the edge was there. “Something changed after that moment in the hall. You looked at me like I was already holding a

I lied to him with the same mouth that still tasted like his kiss.Kairos had not let go of my arm since the garden. He dragged me back to our chambers, slammed the door, and stood there staring at the place where the wound should have been.“Talk,” he said.I kept my voice steady even though my pulse was wild. “The ritual woke something. Old magic. Phoenix blood, maybe. I do not fully understand it yet.”“Phoenix blood.” He repeated the words like they tasted wrong. “You expect me to believe that just appeared because I marked you?”“I expect you to believe what I am telling you right now. The bonding pulled it out of me. That is all I know.”His eyes searched my face. “You are still hiding pieces.”“I am telling you what I can.”&nbs
