The last day of the mating ceremony was a grandiose spectacle, with the pack bustling in preparation for the grand feast and the air humming with anticipation. However, I didn't care about any of that; all I could think about was Hailey. Her words from the night before resonated in my head: Wolfless, Outcast, Dangerous, Lies, everything. I didn't need to see her to know the truth; the subtle hint of her scent that pervaded Flora told me that Hailey wasn't just my mate; she was special, and she was here, somewhere, waiting for me to find her. I spent the morning observing the pack, noting the careful balance of power Marissa had over the omegas and their deference to Thomas. Although it was obvious who was in charge of this pack, their dominion would soon come to an end. It was a sumptuous feast. Silver goblets filled with wine, platters of enough food to feed an army, and elaborate floral arrangements decorated the long tables. Their faces lit up with joy, and the pack assembled in their best clothes. My wolf, however, was agitated and growling beneath the surface. Logan spoke softly as he leaned towards me as I sat down at the head table. "Alpha, I can attest to that. Here, Hailey works as a maid. However, they have concealed her since yesterday. I tightened my jaw. They wanted to keep her away from me. "Now, where is she?" My question was hardly audible above a whisper. "She has been tasked with work in the"kitchen," Logan remarked. "But I don't think she'll be there for very long." I looked around the room and nodded. If Thomas or Marissa thought they could keep her from me, they were terribly mistaken. When I smelt it again, it was a heady blend of rain and wildflowers, and the celebrations were well on. She was there when my head snapped towards the source. Hailey. She walked cautiously through the crowd while holding a tray of drinks. She stood out like a blaze in the darkness despite wearing a plain uniform and having her red hair pulled up in a simple braid. Clawing at the surface, my wolf lunged forward. Mine. I got up from my chair, attracting the attention of all those seated at the table.. Marissa narrowed her eyes and smiled artificially as she said, "Alpha King." "Is something wrong?" I moved away from the table and stared at Hailey, ignoring her. The sounds faded to a faint hum as the room appeared to blur around her. As our gazes locked, she froze, her face changing from one of surprise to one of terror. "Hailey," I stated in a forceful yet hushed voice. Her hands faltered with the tray, and I briefly feared she might run away. Then, though, she came towards me as though attracted by some unseen force. Everyone in the room grew silent as they watched her. HAILEY My heart stopped as Alpha Ryan called my name. No matter how much I wanted to disregard it, his voice was an order. My hands were shaking as I placed the tray on a nearby table, and my feet seemed to be moving on their own. His dark eyes stared into mine with such intensity that it was difficult to breathe, creating an electric atmosphere between us. His voice was low enough for me to hear him enquire, "Is it true?" I was burdened by his inquiry, even though I had no idea what he meant. "I have no idea what you're talking about," I said in a barely audible whisper. He took a step closer and answered, "Yes, you do." "You belong to me." My breath caught as our relationship dissolved. No matter how much I wanted to, I couldn't deny it. "Alpha King Ryan," interrupted Marissa with her voice Sharp and brittle, Marissa broke through the tension. You must be mistaken. Hailey is merely a maid without a wolf. His icy, cruel eyes turned to Marissa. "But she's my mate nonetheless." The chamber echoed with a collective gasp. RYAN Marissa lost her temper and looked to Thomas for solace. Thomas hurriedly answered, "That's not possible," and moved forward. "She is nothing at all. An orphan. Alpha King, you are not deserving of your attention. I growled, and the noise drowned out any more protests. "Enough," I stated in an authoritative tone. "You dare to doubt a mate's bond? Do you dare to ask me a question? Like a fish out of water, Thomas's mouth opened and closed in a panic. "I would never—" With my patience running low, I yelled, "Then stand down." Rotating, I snapped, my patience wearing thin. I turned back to Hailey and held out my hand and said, “Come with me.” Her eyes searched mine, fear and uncertainty fighting with something deeper. She slowly put her hand in mine, and the sparks of our bond ignited the moment our skin touched. “She can’t leave,” Thomas blurted, desperation leaking into his voice. “She belongs to this pack. She’s done things—she’s dangerous!” I rounded on him, my wolf charging forward. “You’ve already said too much, Thomas. Hailey is my mate. She belongs to no one but me.” The weight of my words silenced him, and I turned to Hailey, my voice softening. “Go pack your things. You’re leaving with me.” HAILEY The room buzzed with whispers as I slipped away, my chest thumping with my heart. I was shocked by what had just transpired. I was the mate of Alpha King Ryan, the strongest wolf of all. But doubt began to creep in as I crammed my little possessions into a frayed bag. I desired independence, but would he grant it to me? With my luggage firmly grasped in my hand, I made my way back to the main hall and noticed Thomas whispering to Marissa. Their words were too low for me to hear, and their features were masks of fear and rage. However, the weight of Thomas's stare struck me like a blade when his eyes shifted to me. It wasn't over, whatever they were planned. Not quite yet.LOGANYou can't hear a bird make a sound after she finishes stinging because we're all equally in shock... Is there anything at this point that she isn't capable of doing?I finally close my mouth after she exits the place of burial before facing Ryan. "Like...did you know she could sing this well?"He shakes his head negatively. "I had absolutely no idea, but let's get real; I haven't exactly been mate of the year, you know, so every time she does things like this, I am reminded that I don't really know the mother of my kids at all."Jaden scoffs, "At least I understand better why every powerful male species wants her badly... Let's be real: if she weren't my mother, I'd want her too, yet you keep messing up on all fronts."I find Hailey in the war room, staring at the map while holding chess pieces without her veil; even with her bare face and the level of power she embodies, she looks effortlessly young and innocent. Turtela laughs, "Enough, Jaden; we're adults now. Forgive the ol
AARON Smack! We are stare in shock as we watch the Queen hit an elder; what she's done I have no idea but we all curiously stare as we watch her being escorted out of the ceremony by guards. The whole time we've all been on edge, grief has taken its complete roots in us all and presently I am so exhausted. The day of Isaiah's burial arrived with a sky weighed down by clouds, heavy and unmoving, as if the heavens themselves mourned with us. I stood at the edge of the courtyard, arms crossed tightly over my chest, trying to keep from trembling. The wind carried no song or brightness today. Only the silence of grief. Everyone was dressed in shades of black and grey. The Queen, Hailey, wore a flowing black gown that whispered across the stone like smoke, a veil hiding her expression, though I could still see the pain in the set of her shoulders. She hadn’t said much since my father fell. Not to me, her mate, her friend or even her kids. I could only imagine what she was feeling—he w
HAILEYThe silence of the council chamber was stretched on like a lowly gravesite. Every breath I took echoed in the vaulted walls, bouncing off the stone like whispers of the dead. My fingers, hidden beneath layers of silk and lace, clenched tightly around the black veil that shrouded my face. Mourning has continuously taken its toll on me, and truly I didn't have it in me to fake pleasantries or keep up unnecessary pretentious appearances since I'd rather be locked up alone in my room with no one around me, but alas, being a queen has no room for private mournings. But this? This summoning? This was mockery wrapped in diplomacy in the hands of manipulative individuals itching to have their own selfish way.The Council of Elders sat before me like immovable statues, ancient and trembling in their self-importance. Their eyes flickered between my veil, my silence, and the towering figures behind me.Ryan stood at my right, his arms folded across his chest. Fury rolled off him in silent
ISAIAH I woke with a strange heaviness in my chest. For a moment, I couldn’t breathe. Not because of any wound or illness, but because something in the world had shifted. Something dark had breached the veil of peace, and though it has been a roller coaster of emotions, I know that something has breached the territory. Hailey had put me to rest, whispered soft assurances that I needed for sleep to come, and assured me that I'd done enough and this wasn't my fault. But as I sat up, her voice still lingering in my memory, I knew that I had more to do. The castle walls were shaking. The smell of death clung to every corner of the castle, and I knew for a fact that someone was dying today, but I had no idea who the person was going to be, and so I made my way in stealth mode to observe the situation before concluding on my next line of action. A low rumble carried through the air, like thunder echoing off a mountain."No..."I hasten my footsteps with more urgency, the weight of premoni
ISAIAH The moon hung low, its silver light washing the courtyard in a glow that felt too peaceful for the war stirring in my soul. I leaned against the pillar of the east tower, watching as the wind stirred the trees while the seas flowed and swayed in peace. My mind had been heavy for days now. Lilith’s energy clung to me like a stormcloud, oppressive and wrong. I felt her again just hours ago. Her pleasure. Her wicked joy. Not with me. Never with me. For the sake of the death of her child, she chose to ignore wrong and right, engaging in debauchery, constantly punishing me for not forsaken Hailey, for not siding with Serenia despite the fact that she was the one in the wrong and so she sort the father of her child out and planned for revenge. And I could no longer lie to myself. "Isaiah." Her voice slithered into my awareness before her form did. She appeared behind me, her dark beauty draped in silks that clung to her like shadows. I didn’t turn immediately. "You’re fi
AUDACUS How they think I have no idea what they are doing; I have no idea. I see the greed in Leviathan as he stares at Hailey's portrait; he wants her and everything she has to offer to himself, but right now I'd play the blind fool and let him think I see nothing. I summon Kalesh, who has replaced Shadow Knight in rank after Hailey obliterated him. "Kalesh keeps shadow warriors around Leviathan; make sure they are undetectable and let them report all his movements to you. You must miss nothing."He bows. "Yes, my king.""Also keep an eye on Lilith so she doesn't do anything foolish in the name of grief; she's become an absolute liability, and if she doesn't behave, you have my full support to eliminate her." He exits, and Akael comes in looking defeated even with the full regalia he is wearing presently."Hello, Father"...."Hello, son, what report have you brought to me that has you looking completely defeated?" "Is there really no other way that we can get Akasha back without h
