His eyes are on me

SHAWN

I didn’t know what I expected.

A normal coronation? A quiet night under the full moon? Honestly, I thought I’d just be standing there, cheering for Mike, my best friend, as he became Alpha of the Brim Pack. I’ve known wolves, packs and mates my whole life through him—heard the stories, the rituals, the warnings.

The night air was cold. Fires crackled around the clearing, casting dancing shadows on the faces. The scent of the forest mixed with smoke, dried herbs and tobacco.

Kane Rivers.

Legendary bachelor, custodian of the Brim Pack, tall, broad, dangerous in every sense of the word. I’d met him before, sure. Exchanged nods, brief conversations. I knew who he was. I knew the stories.

But seeing him tonight… seeing him in the firelight, eyes sharp, posture rigid, all control and intense — my chest started pounding for no reason I could explain.

And then, somehow, our eyes met.

I smiled at him, just a small, nervous thing, because that’s what you do when you meet someone's eyes . My heart didn’t just skip. It leapt. Slammed against my ribs. A jolt like static electricity ran through me, and I stumbled a little, catching myself on a tree.

I laughed nervously. “Uh… hey,” I said, waving a hand like it would somehow explain the jolt in my own chest.

Heat pooled at my stomach. My hands tingled. My skin prickled. A low, magnetic pull tugged me toward him, and I swear to God, I wanted to obey.

That’s when I remembered what Mike had always said. About mates. About bonds. About that single person that could unravel a wolf. I laughed nervously again—louder this time, trying to convince myself it was nothing. I’m human. Humans don’t mate with wolves. Especially with legends like Kane Rivers.

I took a step forward. My heart pounded, my vision narrowed, and for a terrifying, delicious moment, I felt… wanted. Like I mattered.

I blinked, startled at the thought.

The fires flickered. Sparks rose into the night. The pack cheered for Mike. The priest’s voice rang out. And I couldn’t hear any of it. All I could see was Kane.

I wanted to run. But my legs didn’t move. My body didn’t obey. My chest heavednand I realized with a jolt that I was curious. I was curious and terrified in the same breath.

I’m human. I can’t be a mate. Not to anyone. Not to Kane Rivers. And yet, when he looked at me, I felt… claimed.

The next instant, he leaned slightly forward, and I caught the faintest flicker of primal instincts in his eyes.

I swallowed hard. I had no idea what I was supposed to do. Because the boy standing here—the human boy who thought he was just witnessing his best friend’s coronation was about to become the centre of something far bigger than he could ever imagine.

“Alpha,” I grin, pulling him into a quick hug. “You survived.”

He laughs into my shoulder. “Barely.”

When we pull apart, his eyes flick past me.

“You good?” he asks.

“Why wouldn’t I be?”

His gaze sharpens. He lowers his voice. “Don’t wander too far tonight.”

I scoff lightly. “I’m human, not fragile.”

“That’s not what I meant.”

Before I can press him, the crowd shifts.

Kane steps forward. The acting Alpha acknowledging the new one.

He stops in front of Mike. Dips his head.

“I recognize you as Alpha of the Brim Pack.”

---

“Why is he staring at me?” I mutter.

Mike doesn’t answer right away.

“He’s not.”

I glance across the clearing.

“That’s weird,” I say under my breath.

Mike exhales slowly. “Just stay in the clearing.”

“I was planning on it.”

I grab a drink from the table near the fire and take a sip .

When I lower the cup— Kane is closer.

He hasn’t said a word to me all night . Our eyes lock.

My pulse stutters. I lift my chin slightly. If this is some dominance play, he can save it. I don’t belong to his pack. His gaze drops briefly—to my mouth, my throat—then returns to my eyes.

Across the clearing, Mike is watching us now.

Kane doesn’t look at him.He looks at me.And then he starts walking towards me.

“You’re staying inside the pack house tonight,” he says quietly.

I blink. “Wasn’t planning to hike into the woods.”

His jaw flexes. “This isn’t a joke.”

“I didn’t realize I needed a curfew.”

“Shawn.”

“You keep looking at me like I owe you something,” I say before I can stop myself. “I don’t.”

His gaze doesn’t waver.

“I know.”

“Then why,” I press, lowering my voice, “are you watching me like that?”

A muscle ticks in his jaw.

“For your safety.”

“That’s Mike’s job now. He’s Alpha. "

“There are things you don’t understand.”

I huff quietly. “Try me.”

His eyes search mine.

“You should keep your distance from me,” he says finally.

“Funny,” I murmur. “You’re the one who walked over here.”

His gaze sharpens. He steps half an inch closer.

“Shawn,” he says again, low and strained, “I’m trying to do the right thing.”

“About what?” I whisper.

His hand lifts - hovering near my wrist.

“About you,” he says.

Footsteps crunch behind him.

Mike’s voice cuts in, firm now. “Uncle.”

  • CLAIMING MY SUNSHINE   One week and we're done

SHAWN I'm still fuming as I stare at Kane's message. A part of me wants to lash out, to tell him he has no idea what I've been through. But another part... another part remembers the way he looked at me, the way he made me feel like I was the only person in the world. I take a deep breath, trying to calm down. It's been a month since I asked for time. A month since I walked away from the pack, from Kane. I've been trying to process everything, to wrap my head around the fact that I'm mated to a werewolf – a man who's decades older than me. Kane's 40, I've just turned 25. He was a pack alpha, a leader. And I'm... well, I'm just a human, trying to figure out my place in this crazy world. I glance back at my phone, at the messages we've been exchanging. It's been a rollercoaster of emotions, but being apart from Kane... it's been hard. My thumb hovers over the screen as I type out a response. "So what did you mean?" I ask, my tone softer now. The dots appear, and I wait, my

  • CLAIMING MY SUNSHINE   What do I really want?

SHAWN One minute I’m sitting on my bed, still in yesterday’s clothes, staring at nothing in particular and the next, I’m waking up to sunlight cutting through the curtains and a dull heaviness sitting behind my eyes. For a second, everything feels normal. Then it comes back. The pack. The bond. Kane. I exhale slowly, dragging a hand over my face before reaching for my phone on the nightstand. A notification blinks on the screen. Mike. " I know you left.Just… whatever you decide, I'm on your side." I drop the phone back onto the bed and lean against the headboard, staring at the ceiling. “Of course you are,” I mutter under my breath. No pushing—just standing there, waiting for you to figure your own mess out. That was Mike. I don’t know what I’m deciding between. Walking away should be simple. Stay here. Go back to normal. Pretend none of this exists. I lean against the window frame. Maybe Mike’s right. Maybe this isn’t something I can just ignore until it goes aw

  • CLAIMING MY SUNSHINE   You let him leave?

KANE I felt him leave. The noise from his room was enough to tell me he was packing. I chose not to intervene. By the time I stepped into the hallway, his scent was already fading from the space he’d occupied, replaced by the cold stillness of the room. No goodbye. No explanation. I didn’t alert the pack. This wasn’t something I could hand off like a patrol route. This was mine. I stepped outside and followed what remained of him—faint traces and disrupted gravel.I kept my distance. Far enough that he wouldn’t hear me, wouldn’t sense me watching. He slowed when the trees came into view. He stopped at the boundary. It was the same place he turned back yesterday. I stayed behind the tree line. He stood there longer this time. A part of me thought that he might choose to turn around, walk back, and give himself more time before making a decision he didn’t fully understand. He stepped over. Every instinct I had pushed forward—close the distance, stop him, pull him ba

  • CLAIMING MY SUNSHINE   Am I running away?

SHAWN I lie there, staring at the ceiling, replaying Mike’s question over and over. Can you? Yes. I can leave. I can walk away. I can go back to my life and pretend none of this happened. Except— I didn’t answer him back. By the time the house goes quiet, I’ve already made the decision. I sit up slowly, careful not to make noise. The room is still dark. I grab my bag, packing quickly. If I stop, I won’t go. I pull on my jacket and pause at the door. This is the part where I should hesitate. I open the door and step out. The hallway is empty. I move quietly down the stairs, past the main room, toward the front entrance. Every step feels louder than it should.I reach the main door. It's now or never. Cold air hits immediately. The gravel crunches under my boots as I move down the path, past the training field, past the outer buildings, toward the boundary I didn’t cross yesterday. “This is fine,” I mutter under my breath. The path changes under my feet as I move fur

  • CLAIMING MY SUNSHINE   This is not the space I asked for

SHAWN I walk past the house, all the way to the edge of the marked boundary and stop. I let out a quiet scoff. “Seriously?” I shove my hands into my pockets and keep walking, kicking at loose gravel. Mate. “This is insane,” I mutter. “Yeah. It is.” “You got a tracking device on me or something?” I ask. “No.” “Then how do you keep showing up?” “You didn’t go far.” “That’s not an answer.” I stare at him. “You said you’d give me space.” “I am.” I gesture between us. “This isn’t space.” “It is,” he says. “You stopped. I didn’t make you.” I drag a hand over my face. “This doesn’t feel like a choice.” “It is.” “Then why does it feel like I’m being pulled back every time I try to walk away?” “The bond doesn’t like distance,” he says. I let out a dry laugh. “Of course it doesn’t.” “It’s not me.” “Good to know you’re not stalking me. Just your supernatural connection doing the work.” “You’re handling this better than most would.” “I’m barely hold

  • CLAIMING MY SUNSHINE   Who is your mate?

SHAWN I make it halfway down the gravel path before I realize I’m shaking from frustration. I stop near the edge of the training field, hands on my hips, staring out at the treeline. Wolves move in the distance, running drills under the morning sun. Unlike the chaos inside that house. Footsteps crunch behind me. “If you’re here to confiscate my coffee for safety reasons, I already finished it.” “Kane,” I say flatly. He stops a few feet behind me. Not touching. “I’m not here to confiscate anything,” he says. “Good. I was worried hydration would become a territory violation.” “You’re angry.” He added. “Brilliant observation. " “You don’t get to manage me,” I say. “You don’t get to dictate where I walk or what I eat or how I breathe.” “I know.” “Do you?” “Yes.” The immediate agreement throws me off. I narrow my eyes. “Then why are you doing it?” His gaze holds mine. “Because I’m trying not to do something worse.” “Worse how?” A muscle jumps in
