THE MARRIAGE IS A LIE

"Nothing," Liam said again, and this time he actually crossed the room to prove it, reaching for her hand like physical distance was the problem rather than the six-word answer he refused to expand on. "Ethan sends cryptic messages when he's stressed about the company. It doesn't mean anything."

"It means something to you. I watched your face."

"Sophia, I need you to trust me on this one."

"You're asking me to trust a man who won't tell me the truth." She pulled her hand back, more hurt than angry, though the two had started blurring together somewhere around midnight. "That's not how trust works."

He didn't have an answer for that or chose not to give her one, and the silence that followed carried them both to bed on opposite sides of the pillow wall; neither of them had bothered rebuilding since the wedding night.

By the time their flight landed in New York the following afternoon, the story had already broken.

Sophia's phone lit up with forty-three notifications before the wheels fully touched the runway. She scrolled through the first few with a rising, sick feeling, and by the time Liam leaned over to see what had drained the colour from her face, she couldn't speak at all. She simply handed him the phone.

LEAKED: The Kingston Marriage Contract.

Someone had photographed the actual document. Every clause. Six months minimum. Separate bedrooms. No emotional expectations beyond friendship. The internet had already decided exactly what it meant, and none of the theories circulating by the thousands were kind.

"They're calling me a gold digger," Sophia said, staring at a headline that used the phrase twice in a single sentence.

"They're wrong."

"It doesn't matter if they're wrong. It's everywhere."

The car ride from the airport passed in near total silence, Liam scrolling through statement after statement his legal team had already drafted, and Sophia staring out the window at a city that suddenly felt like it was watching her back. Reporters had gathered outside the private terminal in numbers she'd never seen for one of Liam's arrivals before. Someone shouted her name as they hurried toward the car. Not Liam's name. Hers, specifically, like she'd become the story instead of a footnote in his.

By the time they reached the penthouse, Liam's phone hadn't stopped ringing. The board wanted an emergency call. Two major investors wanted reassurance. His publicist wanted an official statement within the hour, and Marcus wanted to know exactly who had access to a document supposedly locked inside two secured files.

Liam stood in the middle of his own living room, jaw tight, and made call after call defending a marriage that had, three days ago, felt more real to Sophia than anything else in her life. Now she watched him fight for its legitimacy in front of strangers and wondered if any part of it would survive contact with a public that had already made up its mind.

The second leak arrived that night, timed with a precision that felt less like coincidence and more like strategy.

A photograph. Sophia and Daniel, her college friend and former coworker, standing close together outside a restaurant eight months earlier, his hand briefly on her shoulder in a gesture that meant nothing at the time and apparently meant everything now, stripped of context and captioned by a stranger who'd clearly never met either of them.

Kingston's Bride Secretly In Love With Someone Else?

The comments underneath multiplied by the minute, strangers dissecting a friendship they knew nothing about, deciding within seconds that Sophia Bennett was exactly the kind of woman who married for money while secretly loving somebody else entirely.

Sophia read the headline three times before the words stopped rearranging themselves into nonsense. Liam read it once, standing rigid beside her, and something in his face closed the same way it had on the porch during the storm, the same door swinging shut behind the same eyes.

"Is it true?" he said quietly.

"Liam."

"Do you love him?"

"No." The word came out sharp, immediate, and entirely true. "Daniel is my friend. That's the whole story. That photograph is nothing."

"Then why does it look like everything?"

"Because someone wanted it to look that way." Sophia's voice shook, frustration and fear tangling together until she couldn't separate one from the other. "Someone leaked the contract, someone leaked this photo within hours of each other, and you're standing here asking whether I'm lying instead of asking who did this to us."

He didn't answer. He simply looked at her the way he'd looked at the marriage document weeks earlier, like he was searching for a lie hidden somewhere inside something that looked entirely true.

He turned and left the room without another word, leaving Sophia alone with a headline the entire country had already read and a husband who couldn't decide whether to believe her.

Sophia didn't sleep. She sat awake in the dark long after the apartment finally went quiet, replaying the last three weeks like she might find the exact moment everything started slipping out of her control, and sometime past two in the morning, her phone buzzed with a message from a number she didn't recognise.

No name. No context. Just a photograph attached, and beneath it, four words that turned her blood to ice.

The photograph showed Sophia asleep in Liam's bed. Her own bed, inside her own home, taken from an angle that meant someone had been standing directly inside the room to capture it.

Leave him before he learns what you did three years ago.

Sophia read the message twice, then a third time, her hands shaking hard enough that the phone nearly slipped from her fingers entirely. Three years ago. The same three years from the photograph in Liam's desk. The same three years Ethan had warned him about on the porch. The same three years that seemed to sit at the exact centre of every secret circling this marriage like something with teeth.

She had done nothing three years ago except quietly love a man she believed would never love her back. If somebody thought that was a crime worth threatening her over in the dead of night, they knew something about her own life that she didn't.

Sophia's hands were still shaking when she finally understood what the photograph actually meant. It hadn't come from a paparazzi lens with a long-range zoom, aimed through a window from the street twelve floors below.

It had been taken from inside their bedroom by someone who had stood close enough to watch her sleep without either of them ever knowing.

"Absolutely not."Sophia had said the same two words four times in the last ten minutes, and Liam had ignored her every single time."You're getting a security detail," he said again, sliding a folder across the kitchen counter with the same finality he probably used on billion-dollar acquisitions. "Two men, rotating shifts, starting this morning. Reyes and Cole. They've worked personal security for the family before.""I'm not a hostage.""Someone stood inside our home and photographed you sleeping." His voice stayed level, but his hands, braced flat against the counter, weren't. "This isn't a negotiation.""I don't want to be treated like something fragile that needs constant guarding." Sophia pushed the folder back toward him, harder than necessary, papers sliding half off the edge of the counter. "I want to know who did this. I want an actual answer, not a bodyguard standing outside my office door pretending to read a newspaper.""You can want both things at once.""I want you to

  • CONTRACT MARRIAGE TO MY BILLIONAIRE BESTFRIEND   THE HONEYMOON

The storm hit an hour before their flight home was scheduled to leave.Sophia stood at the floor-to-ceiling windows of the honeymoon villa, watching lightning fracture across water that had been postcard-blue that morning, and listened to Liam argue with the airfield on the phone behind her."Nothing's leaving until tomorrow at the earliest," he said, hanging up. "We're stuck here.""Stuck," Sophia repeated, "in a private villa on a private island, with a private chef and an infinity pool.""I'm aware of how it sounds."They had come here for the same reason they'd done everything for the last three weeks, to convince a watching world that a six-month contract was actually a marriage. Four days of curated photographs, a honeymoon narrative built specifically for the tabloids, and then home to separate lives dressed up as one. Sophia hadn't planned for the storm. She hadn't planned for the strange, suspended quiet of being trapped somewhere with nothing left to do but talk. The staff h

  • CONTRACT MARRIAGE TO MY BILLIONAIRE BESTFRIEND   THE WEDDING

Sophia had imagined her wedding exactly once in her adult life, in the vague, embarrassed way most people did, and it had never once involved a courthouse anteroom with marble floors and a dress fitted for her by strangers eleven days ago.She stood behind the closed doors with her mother fussing over a loose pin in her hair, and her heart was doing something violent and unfamiliar beneath the borrowed pearls at her throat."You don't have to do this," her mother whispered, misreading the panic on her face entirely. "It's not too late to—""I want to," Sophia said, and was startled by how true it felt leaving her mouth.Three years of loving Liam Kingston in complete silence had trained her to expect exactly this feeling and nothing more, a permanent, private ache she carried everywhere and showed no one. She had prepared herself for a courthouse ceremony that would feel like theatre, a legal formality dressed up as romance for the sake of a will's cruel timeline. She had not prepared

  • CONTRACT MARRIAGE TO MY BILLIONAIRE BESTFRIEND   SIX MONTHS

"You're not actually reading that for the legal language."Sophia looked up from the contract, caught. She was on page three for the fifth time, and Liam had clearly noticed. They sat across from each other at his kitchen counter, the document between them like a chessboard, neither of them wanting to move on first. Outside the window behind him, the city had already gone dark, the same skyline she'd looked at a hundred times from this exact apartment as a friend, now somehow different because in eighteen days her name would legally sit beside his on every document tied to it."I'm making sure I understand what I signed.""You understand it. You're stalling."He wasn't wrong, which annoyed her more than if he had been. Sophia closed the folder and pushed it toward the centre of the counter, out of reach, like it might bite her if she stared at it any longer."I think we should acknowledge," she said carefully, "that this is objectively insane.""Objectively." Something close to a smil

  • CONTRACT MARRIAGE TO MY BILLIONAIRE BESTFRIEND   THE KISS

The kiss had gone on eleven seconds too long, and Sophia Bennett was the only person in the ballroom counting.Liam Kingston's hand had started at her jaw, steady and practised, exactly where marketing wanted it for the charity gala rehearsal. Somewhere around second four it had slid to the curve of her neck instead, and his fingers had curled there like he'd forgotten there was a call sheet at all, like he'd forgotten there was a camera crew testing angles twenty feet away.Sophia had kissed this man forty-three times in six years of friendship. Every single one lasted three seconds. Camera-ready. Rehearsed. The kind of kiss two best friends performed when the press needed a photo and Liam needed to look like a man who wasn't married to his company. This one didn't feel rehearsed. His mouth was patient at first. Then it wasn't. Sophia felt his control slip somewhere around second seven, felt it in the way his breath changed against her lips, in the way his other hand found her waist
