Brandon had called for backup the second Zora hit the ground.

“Delta patrol is five minutes out,” he said tightly, his voice strained.

“Graham’s leading them. Please, Alpha, release your command on me.”

But Trent didn’t hear him.

His world had narrowed to the woman bleeding in his arms, Zora. His Luna. Her pulse fluttered beneath his fingers like a dying bird.

Her blood soaked into his clothes, hot and steady.

Moments later, a black SUV skidded to a stop, warriors leaping out like wolves on a leash finally set free. They took down the last of the attackers with savage efficiency. Chains clanked as Graham, Trent’s Gamma, ordered the survivors bound and they moved into one of their vehicles. One of the Trent warriors operated it.

“Luna inside. Now!” Graham barked.

Trent scooped Zora into his arms and sprinted to the car. He had never carried her before, and his brow knitted when he realized how light she was—she weighed like a teen. Shame prickled at him for having been so caught up in

  • CONTRACTED TO THE BEAST ALPHA   Chapter 22

Alpha Trent was quiet as Graham’s words rang in his ears. “Maybe she was raised to ruin you.”No. He wouldn’t believe that. It couldn't be true. “Don’t ever say something like that again,” Alpha Trent said, facing Graham. Graham could see how serious he was and cleared his throat before nodding. “Sorry, Alpha. I should have known my place,” he said. Trent held onto Zora who was still lying motionless on the bed. His mind was racing as he thought of the Doctor’s words. Her DNA was unique—something they hadn’t seen before. Her mind was intact which meant that she wasn’t seriously hurt upstairs. So why wasn’t she healing? Why were her wounds still fresh? This wasn’t something that the doctors could heal. It was something more. He had to find some answers, but at the same time, he didn’t want to leave Zora’s side. He didn’t trust anybody else to look after her. He had only been away for a few hours and the doctor had taken her blood sample. He wasn’t going to let that happen agai

  • CONTRACTED TO THE BEAST ALPHA   Chapter 20

Graham heaved a heavy sigh. He never wanted their alpha like this, Zora needed to be saved at all cost, but alpha Trent not taking the mate stuff serious. He swallowed hard and said, “Alpha… look at her. She’s fading. You want to save her? Then let’s find her mate. You know what that bond can do how it can share pain, and strengthen healing. If she wants you, she can reject her mate. That’s her choice. But right now, we’re running out of time.”Trent’s voice dropped to a near whisper. “She doesn’t even have a wolf. How do I find her mate?”Graham frowned. “How do you know she doesn’t?”“My wolf tried to reach hers. There was nothing. No response.” he replied, staring at her. Graham startled, he was stunned that Trent had found his wolf and he didn't tell anyone. “Wait—your wolf? That’s new. Hasn’t he been… distant for years?”“He came back. But even he couldn’t reach her. And neither could Argon. Compass couldn’t locate anything either.”“That is great, development, you could have sh

“Zora… You were the second one. Not the mate the moon picked for me. But still…” he swallowed hard, his voice fraying, “Your blood is powerful. You could heal me, even if only for a while. And your presence…”He broke off, voice barely above a whisper.“Your presence would draw the real one to me. Because you’re connected somehow.”A beat of silence passed. Then— “That’s why I signed that damn contract. To keep you close… until she came.” He exhaled, bitter and low. “But the truth? I never wanted her.”His throat worked. His next words came rough, ragged.“My wolf, he lost it the first time he saw you; he wanted to claim you. You were standing there in Moonclaw… offered up like some twisted gift. Like you were a thing.”Trent fell in love with Zora at first sight; his dormant wolf surfaced on the same day, but the anger he felt when Dane cared for Alicia and offered Zora to be killed overshadowed his feelings. “I hated Dane for that. I hated myself for not stepping forward. I should

Dread washed over Trent as he heard the doctor's comment. He didn't need to be told how important the mate bond could help in sharing the pain; he wasn't mated to her. Would he allow someone else to claim the woman his heart beat for? Before the doctor could speak further, the door swung open, catching their attention, and nurses wheeled Zora out of the operating room. She was lying face down on the stretcher. She had been slipped into a hospital gown, which was cut open at the back to allow ventilation for the wound. Her back was tightly bandaged, but the edges were already stained with red. The moment his eyes caught her lying helpless on the gurney, Trent froze. His body moved before his mind caught up, stumbling forward as if in a daze. Then he stopped, his eyes locked on her pale form. He understood the doctor's suggestion more than anything. He raised his hand to his mouth, trembling, as if trying to stifle a gasp. He stood numb, unable to breathe, unable to look away. The wor
