CHAPTER 5: PUBLIC PROPERTY

last update 게시일: 2026-10-19 07:55:08

The announcement dropped at 9:17 a.m.

I was sitting at the kitchen island with a cup of coffee that had gone cold when my phone started lighting up like a warning signal. First one message. Then five. Then too many to count.

“Unknown: Is it true you’re married to Damien Voss?”

“Unknown: How long have you been together? “

“Unknown:Any comments on the sudden marriage?”

I locked the screen without answering.

Rosa appeared quietly and placed a tablet in front of me. The headline was already everywhere.

“Voss Empire CEO Marries in Private Ceremony”

Damien Voss, the notoriously private billionaire, has confirmed his marriage to Ava Reed. Details of the relationship remain scarce.

A single photo was attached, one I didn’t even remember being taken. Damien and I were standing near the elevators in the lobby of Voss Tower. His hand rested lightly on the small of my back. I was looking straight ahead, expression carefully blank. The caption called me his “new wife.”

I felt sick.

My phone rang. Lila’s name flashed on the screen. I answered immediately.

“Ava, what the hell?” Her voice was high and panicked. “It’s all over the internet. People from school are already messaging me. Are you really married to that man?”

I closed my eyes. “It’s complicated.”

“Complicated? You’re trending!”

“I’ll explain later. Just… don’t talk to anyone about it, okay? Please.”

There was a long silence on her end. “Dad’s surgery is next week,” she said softly. “They already moved him to a private room. Whatever you did… Thank you. But I’m scared for you.”

“I’m fine,” I lied.

After we hung up, I sat frozen at the island while notifications kept arriving. Some were from old coworkers. Some from numbers I didn’t recognize. A few were cruel.

(Gold digger.

She must be pregnant.

How did nobody land Damien Voss?)

I turned the phone face down.

The elevator chimed at 12:40 p.m.

Damien stepped out still wearing his coat, phone pressed to his ear. He glanced at me once, took in the tablet and my untouched coffee, then ended his call.

“You’ve seen it.”

“Hard to miss.”

He removed his coat and draped it over a chair. “The narrative is under control. My team has already released a short statement. We met through mutual connections, preferred a private ceremony due to family health matters, and requested privacy.”

“Family health matters,” I repeated. “That’s one way to put it.”

His eyes flicked to mine. “It is the truth, just not the entire truth. You will not correct anyone.”

I looked down at the diamond on my finger. “People are calling me a gold digger.”

“People will always talk.” His voice was flat. “Their opinions are irrelevant. What matters is that the board and my grandmother’s lawyers accept the marriage as legitimate.”

He walked to the refrigerator, took out a bottle of water, and drank half of it in silence. When he turned back, his expression had shifted into something colder.

“There will be a short interview request from “City Elite Magazine” tomorrow. We will do it together. Fifteen minutes. Smile. Keep your answers short. I will handle the rest.”

My stomach twisted. “I don’t know how to do interviews.”

“Then learn quickly.” He set the bottle down. “This is the life you agreed to, Ava. The cameras are part of it.”

The way he said my name still felt careful, like he was reminding himself I was temporary.

I stood up. “Is there anything else I should prepare for?”

“The gala on Friday. After that, a small dinner with two board members next week. You will sit beside me and look supportive. That is all.”

He started to walk past me toward the hallway, then stopped.

“One more thing.”

I waited.

Damien’s gaze dropped to my hand, to the rings he had chosen. “Wear them every time you leave this apartment. Even to the hospital. Especially to the hospital. People are watching now.”

The reminder that my father’s surgery was public knowledge somehow made everything worse.

“I understand.”

He nodded once and disappeared down the hall. The soft click of his study door felt final.

I stood alone in the kitchen as the city continued its ordinary day thirty floors below. My phone kept buzzing against the counter. Every vibration felt like another pair of eyes.

I picked it up, opened a new message to Lila, and typed the only truth I could give her.

Ava:I’m okay. Don’t believe what you read. I’ll call you tonight.

Then I turned the phone off completely.

For the first time since signing the contract, the walls of the penthouse felt less like protection and more like a glass cage.

And somewhere behind a locked door, the man who owned the cage was already moving on to the next item on his schedule

as if the woman wearing his rings was simply another business transaction he had successfully closed.

  • CONTRACTED TO THE COLD CEO   CHAPTER 10: THE PERFORMANCE

The stylists arrived at four in the afternoon. They worked in near silence, transforming me piece by piece. Hair swept into an elegant twist. Makeup is soft but precise enough to look expensive under camera flashes. The black gown settled over my skin like liquid night. When Margot fastened the diamond earrings and stepped back, she gave a single nod of approval.“You look like you belong to him,” she said.I didn’t correct her.At six-thirty I stood in the living room, waiting. The heels made me taller. The gown made me feel both powerful and exposed. I kept my hands still so the rings wouldn’t tremble. The elevator chimed at 6:42.Damien stepped out in a black tuxedo that looked as if it had been cut from the dark itself. He stopped when he saw me. His eyes moved over the gown, the earrings, the way the fabric followed the line of my body. For a fraction of a second something unguarded flickered across his face, surprise, or perhaps an assessment that went deeper than usual. Then th

  • CONTRACTED TO THE COLD CEO   CHAPTER 9: THE NIGHT BEFORE

Thursday passed in a strange, suspended quiet.I woke early, as I had every morning since moving in, and found the penthouse empty again. Damien had already left for the office. Rosa served breakfast without conversation. The gown hung in the closet like a promise I wasn’t ready to keep. The diamond earrings waited on the nightstand beside the rings I now wore even when I slept.I tried to fill the hours. I called Lila and listened to her talk about classes and a boy she liked, carefully avoiding any real questions about my new life. I spoke to the hospital and confirmed Dad’s pre-surgery schedule. I even attempted to read a book I found on one of the living-room shelves, but the words refused to stay in my head.Every time I looked at the clock, Friday crept closer. In the afternoon Rosa appeared with a small black box and a note written in Damien’s sharp handwriting.“Wear these tomorrow night. Do not remove them until we return.”Inside were a pair of black heels so delicate they

  • CONTRACTED TO THE COLD CEO   CHAPTER 8: THE FITTING

The stylist arrived at exactly four. Her name was Margot. She was tall, silver-haired, and spoke in short, precise sentences. She didn’t ask how I was. She simply unzipped the garment bag and ordered me to change. The gown was black and heavy in the most deliberate way. Soft fabric that clung and then fell. A low back. A high slit that made me feel exposed even before anyone else saw it. When Margot finished adjusting the final seam, she stepped back and nodded once.“Turn.”I turned. She circled me slowly. “Mr. Voss chose well. The cut makes you look expensive.”I didn’t know whether that was a compliment. While she worked, Rosa entered with a small black box. Inside were diamond earrings that matched the ring on my finger. Margot fastened them without asking. The cold metal against my skin made me flinch.“Friday night you will not touch your hair or your face once we are done with you,” Margot said. “You will walk in on Mr. Voss’s arm, smile when the cameras require it, and speak o

  • CONTRACTED TO THE COLD CEO   CHAPTER 7: WHITE WALLS AND DIAMOND RINGS

The private car stopped in front of the hospital at 10:03 a.m.I sat in the back seat for a full minute after the driver opened the door, staring at the familiar glass entrance. The last time I walked through those doors, I was terrified and broke. Today I wore a cream coat that cost more than my old monthly rent and a diamond that caught the morning light every time I moved my hand.Rosa had insisted on the coat. “Mr. Voss prefers you look composed in public,” she had said. I didn’t argue.Inside, the difference was immediate. The nurse at the desk recognized my name and smiled too politely. “Mrs. Voss, right this way. Your father was moved to the executive wing yesterday.”Executive wing. Even the hospital had a hierarchy.Dad’s new room was quiet and flooded with soft light. He looked smaller than I remembered against the white sheets, but the machines around him were newer and quieter. When he turned his head and saw me, his tired eyes widened.“Ava.” His voice was rough. “You l

  • CONTRACTED TO THE COLD CEO   CHAPTER 6: FIFTEEN MINUTES

The interview was scheduled for eleven the next morning.I barely slept. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw headlines and strangers’ comments calling me a gold digger. When the sky finally lightened, I gave up and sat by the window with a cup of tea I didn’t drink.Rosa appeared at nine with a makeup artist and a stylist. They worked in silence, transforming me into someone who looked like she belonged on Damien Voss’s arm. Soft makeup. Hair in elegant waves. A cream blouse and tailored black trousers that fit too perfectly. When they finished, I stared at the mirror and felt like a stranger was staring back.At ten-forty, the elevator chimed.Damien stepped out in a charcoal suit, already looking like he had won three arguments before breakfast. He stopped when he saw me. His eyes moved from my hair to the rings on my finger, then back to my face.“Acceptable,” he said. That was the closest thing to a compliment I had received. The magazine team arrived five minutes later. Two people
