Morning arrived without any pause from a night that was almost sleepless. Elena was still asleep on Liam’s chest. And what made me stop in place was the fact that Liam also fell asleep sitting upright, his head tilted to the side, his arms still locking the baby so she would not slip even a centimeter.

I walked slowly so the floor would not creak. Up close, I saw Liam’s eyes fully closed for the first time since the night before. His breathing was heavy but steady. There were faint lines under his eyes, signs of exhaustion that no one bothered to hide.
