Chapter 149

Today is my day off. I was able to wake up without the hospital alarm, without thinking about morning rounds, without thinking about surgical reports. The only thing on my mind was Elena. I walked over to her while she was playing with colorful blocks on the living room carpet. Her little black hair that had started to grow longer was tied into two pigtails, making her cheeks look even chubbier.

“Do you want to play with Mama?” I asked as I sat down.

She nodded eagerly and hugged me. “Yes, Mama is off?”

“Yes. Mama is off today,” I answered while kissing her forehead.

That should have been enough to make me feel relieved. But I also knew there was one more thing in my mind, I hoped Liam would have the day off too. I wanted a day where the three of us could sit in the same room without rushing, without emergency calls, without surgery schedules.

We started playing. I built a tower with the wooden blocks and pretended to be amazed every time Elena put another block on top.
