The next day, the hospital felt different. Though the walls and hallways were the same, to me the atmosphere felt unfamiliar. Gone was the sharp scent of the operating room that had clung to me for the past four months the strong antiseptic mixed with the metallic tang of surgical instruments. Now, what I smelled was medicine, IV fluids, and the beeping of monitors in the internal medicine ward.

I stood in front of the nurse station, wearing my white coat with a small name tag pinned to my chest. A new notebook was tucked in my hand, ready to capture every detail I would learn. My feelings were mixed. There was excitement, but also a quiet sadness, because I would no longer see Liam standing in the operating room, giving firm instructions while occasionally glancing at me with that look only I could understand.

“Good morning, new clerkship student?” greeted a resident with a warm smile.

Four months had flown by so quickly in the surgery rotation. It felt as though it was only yesterday that I stood nervously beside the operating table, listening to Liam’s firm yet calm voice directing the course of the procedure. And now, today, I found myself standing in front of the operating room with mixed emotions. This was my last day in the surgery rotation. Tomorrow, I would begin my clerkship in internal medicine.I gazed at the signboard that read “Department of Surgery” hanging on the wall. There was a sense of pride, knowing I had survived four months of pressure, but also an ache of sadness, because I knew the joyful days of working so closely with Liam in the operating room would never feel the same again.I stepped inside. The familiar scent of antiseptic mingled with the cold air of the AC welcomed me, just like always. Nurses I had come to know smiled and congratulated me for completing the rotation successfully. I returned their smiles faintly, though my heart felt

After showering together, we changed into clean clothes and sat at the dining table. A simple meal was ready—warm soup, bread, and herbal tea. It might not have been as lavish as the Luna banquet earlier, but for me, sitting across from Liam was the most beautiful thing.I watched his face, still tired, yet his gaze remained sharp. Every now and then he took a deep breath, then offered me a small smile.“Eat plenty. You used up your energy saving that man earlier,” he said as he ladled soup into my bowl.“I was scared, but at that moment I had no other choice.”“You were brave, but I want to talk about something more important.”“What is it?” I asked.Liam set his spoon down and looked at me seriously. “I know you keep thinking about your father. You hope to meet him again, but I want you to stop hinging your life on that. Focus on something real—something you can achieve now.”I fell silent. Those words felt like a gentle slap, because he was right. I often drifted into shadows and w

The dust slowly settled; the tensioned cheers from a moment ago had turned into a roar of victory. In the center of the arena, Liam still stood upright though his chest rose and fell rapidly, his breathing ragged, his silver fur smeared with blood and dirt.Gregor lay on the ground, his black wolf form covered in scratch marks and bite wounds. He tried to get up once, staggered, then fell back onto his back, breathing heavily. The crowd began to chant Liam’s name, “Darkmane! Darkmane!”Liam stepped slowly toward Gregor. He had reverted to his human form, though his body was streaked with blood and bruises. With the last of his strength he reached out a hand—a gesture of honor, not of insult.“Get up, Gregor. The fight is over,” Liam said.Gregor turned his head; his red eyes glinted with anger and shame. Roughly, he brushed Liam’s hand away.“Don’t think this is the end,” he snarled. Then he forced himself to his feet, staggered, and walked out of the arena with his head bowed. The au

The drums had only just faded when a roar thundered from the northern stands. A hulking figure in a dark cloak emerged from the crowd, each step heavy, his aura suffocating. Whispers died, and a single name rolled through the spectators like a storm.“Gregor…”Liam stiffened, his jaw tightening. His hand clamped around mine, harder than before. Gregor’s eyes swept the arena, locking on Liam.“I challenge you, Alpha Liam of Darkmane! You and me alone. We end this here, before every true Alpha!”The crowd erupted. Some howled for blood, others froze, knowing the weight of such a duel. If Liam refused, Darkmane’s honor would shatter. If he accepted, his life hung in the balance.“Liam, you’ve just recovered,” I whispered, panic rising.“I accept,” he declared.A roar thundered across the arena. The Moon Keeper lifted his bone staff. “Two Alphas shall fight. This combat is sanctioned. It ends only when one yields or falls. Are you prepared?”Gregor sneered, shrugging off his cloak. Scars

The thunder of drums shifted into the blare of a long horn. The Alphas descended into the stone-ringed arena, its walls lined with ancient terraces. Bonfires roared at the four corners, each flame marking one of the sacred directions. A Moon Keeper, a gray-robed elder, lifted his staff of bone.“Friendly combat. Not for vengeance, but for respect. The blood spilled here is bound by oath.”Liam stood among the honored line, arms folded, his gaze flicking toward me. I gave him a small nod. He kept his promise holding back. The first match began: the Alpha of Blackclaw versus the Alpha of Ironhowl. Cheers erupted as two tall men shed their cloaks, shifting in an instant. Bones cracked, muscles swelled, fur burst forth black and gray. They circled, snapped, lunged testing reflexes, measuring dominance. Minutes later, Ironhowl lowered his muzzle in defeat. My chest tightened. No matter how many times I witnessed it, the transformation always unsettled me not from fear, but from the knowled
