LOGINNOVA
The car is silent for approximately five seconds. That short. That's how long it takes for my head to process what Enzo has just said. Journalism? Really? "It's... It's a thing of the past. It got me fucked up. I'm not going back to it. And don't tell me that I don't fit in with Beth and her friends." Enzo keeps driving, his eyes solely on the road now. I can practically see the gears in his head turning. I don't like where this conversation is heading. Not at all. It's headed towards a conversation I'd rather not have with Enzo. But it seems he knows what he's doing, and he doesn't care. It's like he's steering the boat toward that far end. "You love telling stories about people." "Enzo..." "No. That's what you love. You love the media. You live the clicks. You love the thrill and the attention it gives you, don't you?" When I don't answer, he turns to me. "I've seen you at the games reporting. I've seen the way you light up when stuff happens. I don't know why you quit." I stare at him. "You literally hate me because I was too stupid and obsessed with journalism. I lost my best friend because of it. Mr. Lawson won't even look at me and it's all because of some stupid hobby." "You said you wanted to be a..." "That was before okay? That was before I realized that I couldn't do that without hurting the ones that I love. My brother is into hockey and you are as well. One of these days I'll find something beneficial to me, and I'd destroy people I love because of it!" "I don't hate you, Nova." I shut my eyes. "You keep saying that." "I don't." "You do. Ever since the stuff happened. You hate me. Noah hates me." "I don't hate you. I could never hate you." He says, making a turn for the road that leads to his house. He gives me a long glance. "I could never hate you." "But..." "You're Noah's sister. You made a mistake." I feel a lump rising in my throat. "That's not what you said." I blink. "That's not what Noah said. That's not what it looked like when you and my brother came to my aunt's place." "There was a lot of emotions, Nova. I try to hate you but I can't. And it's not just because you're Noah's sister..." The engine cuts out, plunging the car into silence. Enzo doesn't reach for the door handle. Instead, he turns in his seat, resting his arm along the console, and looks right at me. I blink, tearing my gaze away from him. What's happening? Why did he drive us to his place instead of mine? And why is he looking at me like that? "It’s because... God, Nova," he starts, his voice dropping. "Because I’ve been trying to bury this for years." "Bury what?" I mutter, crossing my arms defensively. "What are you even talking about, Enzo?" "I’m talking about the fact that I’ve had feelings for you," he says, holding my gaze. "Actual, gut-wrenching, distracting-as-hell feelings for you, for as long as I can remember." I freeze. The world outside the windshield stops spinning. I just stare at him, my mouth slightly parted. Is he out of his mind? Has a hockey puck hit his head one too many times this season? Is this some sick, twisted joke? Yet, even as my brain screams at me that he has to be insane, a humiliating part of me can't completely rule it out. I think back to all those times he watched me a little too closely across at home. "Are you..." I swallow hard. "Are you concussed? Did you take a hard check into the boards today because that is a stupid joke." "I’m dead serious, Nova," he says, leaning in closer. "Do you have any idea how insane it drove me watching you throw yourself into reporting, worrying about people who didn't give a damn about you? Do you know what it did to me seeing the scandal and everything?" "You acted like you hated me," "I didn't hate you. I couldn't say anything because Noah is my brother, my best friend, and the unwritten rule is you don't cross that line. But I’ve had these feelings for you forever, Nova. Literally forever." My chest heave. My palms are sweating. The silence in the car is deafening. My voice comes out in a squeak. "You... you have feelings for me?" Enzo holds my gaze for a while. Then, the corner of his mouth twitches. A second later, his head tilts back and he bursts out laughing... It's loud, booming, and it's obnoxious. And it shatters the heaviness into a million pieces. I blink. "What? What is so funny?" Enzo wipes a tear from the corner of his eye, still chuckling as he shakes his head. "No... oh, man... no, I don't!" "What do you mean, no?" I demand, my eyebrows pulling together. Grinning wider than I’ve ever seen him grin, Enzo leans back against his seat. "You really thought it was true? Oh, God, Nova, your face right now... priceless. Absolute gold. I should have recorded that." The blood rushes violently to my cheeks, burning hot enough to singed my skin. My jaw drops open, and my brain short-circuits. "I... you... wait, you just said... that was a complete... are you actually out of your mind?!" I stammer, my voice pitching upward. "You lied? You just made all of that up?!" "Come on, you walked right into it!" Enzo laughs harder, doubling over. "The shock in your eyes, I swear I could frame it and put it on my wall." My hands curl into tight fists in my lap, and I glare at him. "Fuck you, Enzo." Enzo smirks, shifting the car back into park as he finally catches his breath, looking pleased with himself. "You wish, Nova," he teases, gazing down at me. "You totally wish."NOVAI turn away before either of them can say anything else and head for the kitchen.I need food. Or water. Or a new family. Honestly, at this point, I'll take whatever is available. My brother is exhausting and I can vouch that the kitchen will provide me a temporary escape for the next couple of minutes.I pull out the ingredients for my meal and set them on the counter, grabbing a chopping board and a knife.Chop. Chop. Chop.Maybe if I focus on the vegetables, I'll stop thinking about everything else.Fat chance.I hear footsteps behind me, and a moment later, Enzo's reflection appears in the doorway. I glance at him before letting out a sigh."Don't be mad at him." He says, folding his arms.I turn back to the chopping board. "I'm not mad at him.""Nova."I take a breath. "I said I'm not."He leans against the kitchen doorway, crossing his arms over his chest.I give him a look. "Okay, fine. Maybe I am a little mad at him.""Why?""You know why. And also because he's really ann
NOVAI trace the grain of the wooden coffee table with the tip of my finger. The anger that flared in my chest a moment ago is slowly being replaced by a cold, sinking feeling."If she sends it," I say quietly, not looking up, "it won't just be between you and me, Enzo. If she sends it to Noah... or to my parents...""I know," he interrupts. "I've already thought about that. Believe me, it's all I've been thinking about since I walked out of that room.""And?" I finally look at him. "And I'll deal with it," he says, his jaw clenching. "If she sends it to your brother, I'll take whatever he has to dish out. I'll take a punch, I'll take a broken nose... hell, I'll take whatever he wants. But I am not going to let her ruin my promise to you. I am not going to let her dictate who I talk to, who I care about, or what I do with my life."Well, I should take his word. He does sound sincere. Oh God. It’s terrifying how easily he can make me believe him, even when I'm not supposed to, given t
ENZOI storm out of the living room before I do something I'll regret. Something like smashing every fucking thing in this house. My mother's laughter follows me to the stairs."Don't forget to thank me when you're playing in the NHL, Lorenzo!"I flip her off without turning around."Such a lovely gesture!" she calls after me.God, I fucking hate her. I make it halfway up the stairs before the realization of what just happened hit me. I squeeze my eyes shut.Okay... I'm not seriously worried about what her reaction would be right? That's fucking right. I'm worried about what her brother's reaction would be when he listens to that recording. I practically tore his sister apart with every disgusting word. But then... I'd said those things to protect her, right? To make my mother believe there was nothing between us. And now my mother has a recording. A fucking recording.I pull my phone from my pocket and open Nova's contact. My thumb hovers over the call button. What am I supposed to
ENZO“No, you listen to me, you miserable...”I bite my tongue hard, my chest heaving like I’ve just played three consecutive periods of brutal overtime. I can’t do this here. Not with her standing in the entryway looking at me like I’m a malfunctioning machine.I turn on my heel, shoving past her, and storm up the stairs two at a time, leaving her screeching complaints against the walls.Once I hit the second-floor landing, I pull my phone out of my pocket, my thumb swiping. I can still remember what I told Nova downstairs. What we were going to do before my mother arrived unannounced. I open a browser tab. How to be good to her?A bunch of sappy, useless relationship blog links pop up. I stare at the screen, let out a scoff at some generic advice about "active listening and emotional availability," and delete the search. I try again. How to be a boyfriend.I scroll through a few more articles until one headline actually makes me snort. Signs you're failing as a boyfriend. Yeah, well
ENZOWhat is she doing here? That's what I think first when I sight my mother glaring at Nova. It's nothing new. It's been established that she doesn't like Nova. She doesn't care much for Noah but Nova... we all know she dislikes the girl. Then after the recording stuff... her hatred for the girl grew.My mother’s eyes... icy, and sharp, takes in the scene. First, they land on me, holding Nova’s hand tightly in mine. Then her gaze drags over to Nova. She takes in her damp hair, and the plain black shirt swallowing her frame... my shirt.I feel Nova flinch beside me, as she tries to yank her fingers out of my grip. Panic. She’s terrified. I don't let go immediately she tries to get her hand off. I tighten my grip, letting her know I’ve got her, before letting my fingers slide away."Mom," I say, stepping between them. I square my shoulders, blocking Nova from my mother's line of sight. "You said you weren't coming back until Sunday.""Evidently, I came home early," she replies. She do
NOVA The sun is scorching, shimmering, but that is the last thing on my mind.My palms are slick with sweat. My stomach is doing dangerous, acrobatic flips. And my brain? My brain has left me completely, leaving behind a mess.Yeah, I'm a mess. I'm a panicking mess.We haven't spoken since last night. Not a text. Not a glance across the hall at school. Nothing.I wouldn't even be standing here right now if Noah hadn't literally cornered me against my locker during fourth period, pinning me with his protective older brother glare and telling me, “Go see Enzo after school.”Easy for him to say. He didn't make a life-altering, utterly terrifying deal with his best friend to pretend to be a couple while secretly harboring feelings.I stand on the front porch of Enzo’s house, staring at the brass doorbell as if it's a venomous snake. I've been standing here for approximately five full minutes, my inner monologue screaming every possible worst-case scenario. What if his parents are home? T
