The next morning, sunlight filtered through the kitchen blinds like nothing had happened. Like I hadn’t stood frozen in the hallway with Mason’s eyes burning into me. Like I hadn’t touched myself on the couch afterward, chasing a release that felt hollow because it wasn’t his hands.

I sat at the breakfast table pushing scrambled eggs around my plate, my body still humming with leftover tension. Madison moved around the kitchen in her robe, humming softly as she poured coffee. She looked radiant  cheeks flushed, hair tousled in that just-loved way. At forty-two, she carried herself with a confidence I envied. She had rebuilt her life after my father left, and Mason had become her anchor.

“Morning, sweetheart,” she said, sliding a mug toward me. Her smile was warm, “You look like you didn’t sleep much.”

I forced a shrug. “Just… thinking about the scholarship form.”

Mason entered then, freshly showered, wearing a crisp button-down that stretched across his broad shoulders. He was in his mid-forties, but he moved with the easy strength of a man who stayed in control of everything including himself. His gaze flicked to me for a second longer than necessary before he kissed Madison on the temple.

“Coffee smells good,” he murmured, voice low The same voice I’d heard growling commands the night before.

I crossed my legs under the table, pressing my thighs together. Stop it, Zoe.

Breakfast should have been normal. Instead, every small movement felt charged. When Mason reached across me for the sugar, his arm brushed mine. The contact sent a spark straight through me. I caught the faint scent of his soap  cedar and something darker. My fingers tightened around my fork.

Madison watched us both over the rim of her mug. She didn’t say anything, but I felt her attention. She had always been perceptive.

“You know,” she said casually, setting her mug down, “you’ve been so tense lately, Zoe. Maybe you need to get out more. Date someone. Live a little.”

The words landed like a challenge. I glanced at Mason. He was watching me again, that intense, unreadable stare that made my skin prickle with awareness. Heat crept up my neck.

“I’m fine, Mom,” I muttered.

“Are you?” Madison tilted her head, her smile softening  “Mason and I worry about you cooped up in this house all the time.”

Mason’s hand rested on her shoulder, thumb stroking lightly. The casual possessiveness of it made my chest tighten. I wanted that touch. I wanted to know what it felt like to be claimed so completely.

“I’m not cooped up,” I said, standing abruptly. “I have things to do.”

I escaped to the living room, heart pounding. The scholarship form still lay half-finished on the table. I stared at it, but the words blurred. All I could think about was the way Mason had looked at me last night  like he saw the hunger I tried so hard to hide. Like he wanted to feed it.

The day dragged. I tried to study. Tried to run errands. But every corner of the house held echoes. The kitchen counter where he had almost touched me. The hallway where our eyes had locked. By evening, I was a live wire.

Madison found me curled on the couch later, flipping through channels without seeing anything. She sat beside me, closer than usual, and tucked a strand of hair behind my ear.

“You’re beautiful, you know that?” she said softly. “You deserve to feel wanted. Desired.”

Her words wrapped around the ache inside me. I turned to look at her. Madison’s eyes held a depth I rarely saw love, yes, but also something knowing. Almost inviting.

“Mom…”

She squeezed my hand. “Whatever you need, sweetheart. We’re family.”

The front door opened. Mason stepped in, loosening his tie after a long day. His eyes found us immediately mother and daughter side by side. Something flickered across his face. Approval?  He crossed the room and leaned down to kiss Madison deeply, one hand cupping the back of her neck. I couldn’t look away. The way she melted into him stirred that familiar twist low in my belly.

When he pulled back, his gaze shifted to me. “Zoe.”

Just my name. But the way he said it felt like a caress.

Dinner was torture. Conversation flowed easily between them, but underneath it all was this current pulling me in. Madison’s laughter when Mason teased her. The way his hand rested on her thigh under the table. The occasional brush of his foot against mine  accidental? I didn’t think so.

Later that night, I lay in bed unable to sleep. The house had grown quiet again, but my mind wouldn’t settle. I replayed every look, every near-touch. The way Madison had said “we’re family.”

A soft knock sounded on my door.

“Come in,” I whispered.

Madison stepped inside, wearing a thin robe. She closed the door gently and sat on the edge of my bed. Moonlight spilled across her face.

“Can’t sleep either?” she asked.

I shook my head. She reached out and rested a hand on my arm, her touch warm and reassuring. Yet it sent sparks dancing across my skin.

“You know,” she said quietly, “Mason notices things. He notices you.”

My breath caught. “Mom, I"

“Shh.” She leaned closer. Her fingers traced lightly down my arm. “It’s okay to want things, Zoe. Even complicated things. Even forbidden ones.”

The air grew thick. I could smell her perfume mixed with the faint scent of Mason on her skin. My body responded against my will nipples tightening, a slow throb building between my thighs.

Madison smiled softly, almost tenderly. “He makes me feel alive. Powerful. Desired in ways I never knew I needed.” Her voice dropped. “I think you feel it too.”

I didn’t deny it. Couldn’t. The confession hung between us, raw and vulnerable.

She stood, robe slipping slightly off one shoulder, revealing smooth skin. “Think about what you really crave, sweetheart. And know that this house… this family… has room for more than you might expect.”

She left the door slightly ajar when she exited.

I lay there, pulse racing, body on fire. Footsteps sounded in the hallway  heavier. Mason. He paused outside my room. I held my breath, every nerve alight, imagining him pushing the door open. Imagining his hands replacing my mother’s gentle touch. Imagining both of them.

The footsteps continued past.

I pressed my face into the pillow, a frustrated moan escaping. The craving was no longer a whisper. It was a roar. And with every passing hour, the line between right and wrong, between daughter and desire, blurred further.

Varek dialed the number on the screen.Adriana’s face filled the feed, calm and polished, the detonator resting loosely in her fingers like a cigarette she hadn’t decided to light.“You’re later than I expected,” she said. “Is my assassin still warm beside you?”Varek’s voice was ice. “You walked into a building I own carrying enough explosive to redecorate three city blocks. That was a mistake.”“Was it? I see the house. I see the bedroom window. I know she’s there. Finish the contract, Sable, or I finish the building—and then I release every file I promised.”I sat up, sheet around my waist, and spoke clearly enough for the microphone.“The contract is void. I chose him. Come collect the refusal yourself if you’re brave enough.”Adriana’s smile thinned. “Pity.”Her thumb moved on the detonator.

The window latch turned a second time.I rolled off the bed, gun raised, sheet clutched around me. A dark figure slipped through the gap with practiced silence—female, lean, rain still on her jacket. She froze when she saw the muzzle pointed at her face.Adriana Voss’s courier. I recognized the jawline from a briefing photo months ago.“Don’t,” I said. She moved anyway. I fired once. The shot took her in the shoulder and spun her into the wall. She hit hard, cursed, and tried to raise her own weapon. I crossed the room, kicked it away, and kept my sights on her forehead.“Varek,” I called, loud enough to carry.Heavy footsteps pounded up the stairs. The door unlocked. Varek came in fast, pistol sweeping the room, then lowering when he saw the situation. Two of his men followed. He took one look at the wo

Varek was off the bed and armed before the radio finished the sentence.“Stay behind the doorframe. Gun from the drawer. Same rules as before.”I grabbed the compact pistol. He moved into the hallway in silence. Two suppressed shots cracked in quick succession downstairs, followed by a heavy thud and a short, wet gasp. Then Varek’s voice, calm and cold:“Clear. One more tried the service corridor. He’s down.”He returned three minutes later, blood spattered across the open front of his shirt—none of it his. He locked the bedroom door, set both guns on the dresser, and looked at me with an expression that had burned past adrenaline into something darker and more focused.“Safeword still red?”“Yes.”“Good. Clothes off. Kneel in the center of the room.&rdq

The phone screen went dark.Varek set it down with deliberate care. Outside, the sky had begun to pale at the edges. Sunrise was no longer abstract. It had a clock.“Talk,” he said. “All of it. Now.”I sat on the edge of the bed in the towel, still damp from the shower, and gave him the truth I had been carving into smaller pieces for days.“The client is Adriana Voss. She controls the eastern import routes you blocked last winter. She lost two shipments and a lieutenant. She wanted you dead in a way that couldn’t be traced back to her crews. I was the clean option—former intelligence asset, no active affiliations, already drowning in debt she quietly inflated through Krennic so I would need the contract.”Varek’s face didn’t change, but the air around him did.“She paid half upfront,” I continued. “The rest on confirmation. I was supposed to get clos

I shot the man in the foyer through the throat. The recoil snapped up my arms. He staggered, eyes wide with something like surprise, and dropped. His pistol skittered across the marble. Blood spread under him in a dark, glossy pool that reflected the red emergency lights.Varek didn’t waste the second. He moved down the stairs, kicked the weapon away, and put a finishing round in the man’s chest without ceremony. Then he looked back at me.“Good choice.”More gunfire cracked outside. The radio on his belt erupted with overlapping reports—east wall compromised, one of his men down, van reversing. Varek spoke two short orders into the handset, then grabbed my wrist and pulled me toward the rear of the house. We didn’t make it to the service gate.A second intruder came through the kitchen windows in a shower of

Varek pulled out of me and was on his feet before the phone screen dimmed.“Stay down. Away from the windows.”He dressed in under thirty seconds—trousers, shirt left unbuttoned, pistol already in his hand from the bedside drawer. Another weapon appeared from under the mattress. He racked it once, checked the chamber, and tossed a smaller compact piece onto the bed near my cuffed hands.“You know how to use that?”“Yes.”“Good. If anyone who isn’t me comes through that door, shoot them in the face. Not the chest. Face.”He unlocked the cuffs with a key from his pocket. Blood rushed back into my fingers in a painful tingle. I sat up, pulled the sheet around me, and closed my hand around the gun. The weight was familiar in a way I hated admitting.Varek moved to the w
