THE ARCHIVE

The Greywatch archive occupied three subterranean floors beneath the main library, and Marlowe descended into it that evening with Emeric beside her, the warded doorway humming faintly against her skin as she crossed the threshold.

"You've never been down here," he observed, watching her reaction as they passed towering shelves lit by flickering witch-light sconces. "Most students haven't. Certainly no Unranked student, beyond the basement reading room they're technically permitted."

"It's not what I expected."

"The upstairs library holds curricula. This holds everything the Founding families would prefer stayed buried, catalogued badly enough that finding anything specific requires either institutional knowledge or considerable patience." He led her deeper, past shelves labeled in a script she didn't recognize, until they reached a small alcove containing a single desk and a stack of ledgers notably more weathered than the one he'd shown her the previous evening. "Your task is straightforward, if tedious. Cross-reference these against the master lineage index. I need every reference to bloodlines flagged as dormant, diluted, or incomplete."

"Why?"

"I'm keeping my end of our agreement," Emeric said, and something in his tone made clear this was costing him more than he was comfortable admitting. "You asked for equal information. I've decided to earn your trust by letting you find part of the answer yourself, rather than simply telling you and observing you decide whether to believe me."

Marlowe settled at the desk, pulling the first ledger toward her, and worked in focused silence for the better part of an hour, page after page of cramped handwriting recording bloodline marriages and lineage disputes stretching back centuries. She was three ledgers deep when she found it — a lineage entry dated roughly two hundred years earlier, the family name deliberately scratched out beneath a note in the same cramped handwriting: bloodline erased by council decree, all records to be sealed pending further review.

"Emeric." She hadn't meant to use his first name — it slipped out before she caught herself — but he didn't correct her, appearing at her shoulder within seconds, his expression tightening as he read the entry.

"Duskmere," he said quietly, before she'd even asked. "That's the name you're looking for, buried beneath the scratch marks if you look closely enough. The seventh Founding bloodline. Erased by unanimous council decree, two centuries ago."

"You already knew this was in here."

"I knew where to find it," he said. "I didn't know how to explain it without also explaining considerably more than I'm prepared to explain tonight." He met her eyes directly, something raw briefly surfacing beneath his careful composure. "My family's private records go into much more detail than this archive's sealed ledgers. I've known about the Duskmere erasure since I was old enough to understand what my family's legacy actually contains."

"And you think I'm connected to them."

"I think," Emeric said carefully, "that an Unranked student with unexplained lineage, unusually high magical aptitude, and a surname that made me go still the moment I heard it, arriving at this academy two centuries after a bloodline vanished from every official record — I think coincidence stretches considerably thinner than that."

Marlowe copied the entry into her own notebook, hands steadier than she expected given the weight of what he'd just confirmed. "What was their magic? The Duskmere line, before they were erased."

He hesitated, and for a moment she thought he might retreat behind measured evasion again. Then he exhaled, some internal decision settling into place. "Unmaking," he said. "The ability to unbind, dissolve, erase existing magical structures. Considered, at the time, the single most dangerous magical signature this school had ever produced."

The words landed with unsettling familiarity, though Marlowe couldn't yet say why, some instinct stirring low in her chest that she didn't have language for.

"Why erase an entire bloodline over a single dangerous ability?" she asked. "That seems like an extreme response, even for magic considered dangerous."

Something shuttered behind Emeric's eyes, the careful evenness returning to his voice in a way that told her, unmistakably, she'd reached the edge of what he was willing to say tonight. "That's a question I don't have a complete answer to yet," he said. "But I intend to find one. And when I do, Marlowe, I promise you'll hear it the same day I do. Equal information, just as agreed."

She stayed in the alcove long after Emeric had gone, the cross-reference work forgotten, her attention fixed wholly on the memory of his deliberate admission and the raw, unguarded moment before he'd shuttered it away again. She thought about the registrar's reluctant pen, Voss's gaze pausing on the Unranked section during orientation, and now this — a boy whose entire family legacy apparently rested on a story he himself was beginning to doubt.

None of it, taken individually, meant very much. Taken together, it formed a pattern she still didn't have the full shape of, but which she was increasingly certain existed regardless of her ability to name it completely.

By the time she finally climbed back toward the surface, the castle had settled into its late evening quiet, and Marlowe found herself walking slower than necessary, turning over everything she'd learned. Emeric had given her more tonight than she'd expected — genuine information, offered at real cost to himself, judging by the way his voice had tightened around every admission. Whatever came next between them, she was beginning to suspect it would be significantly more complicated than simple enemy or simple ally.

  • CROWNLESS AT GREYWATCH ACADEMY    SOVEREIGN TERRITORY

Marlowe's second week introduced her to a reality Talia had tried to warn her about but which words alone hadn't fully prepared her for: the dining hall's tiered seating chart wasn't merely uncomfortable in theory. It was a daily, deliberate ritual, and her new service assignment apparently exempted her from none of it."You eat standing," Odalys informed her flatly, watching Marlowe attempt to claim an unclaimed table near the hall's edge. "Unranked assigned to Sovereign service stand near their assigned student's table, in case anything's required during the meal. It's in the charter."Marlowe found Emeric's table without difficulty — impossible to miss, positioned at the hall's absolute center — and took her position at its edge, close enough to be available, distant enough to remain unmistakably separate."You're new," Cressida Winthrop observed, her pale gaze sweeping over Marlowe with clinical, unhurried assessment. "Kestrel, isn't it? Emeric's new project.""Cressida," Emeric s

The summons arrived two days later, delivered by a silent attendant who handed Marlowe a folded slip of parchment during breakfast and walked away before she could ask a single question.Marlowe Kestrel — report to the Castellan study, West Tower, immediately following morning classes. Service assignment finalized."Personal request," Talia said, reading over her shoulder, her earlier ease entirely gone. "From Emeric. Not the registrar's automatic assignment. Marlowe, I don't think I've ever actually seen that happen before. Sovereign Seven members almost never request specific Unranked students personally.""He recognized my name at the gate," Marlowe said. "I don't think this is coincidence."She spent the rest of the morning distracted through classes she barely absorbed, and by the time she climbed the narrow spiral staircase to the Castellan study that afternoon, she'd worked herself into a low, simmering resolve that had considerably more spine in it than nerves.Emeric stood ne

  • CROWNLESS AT GREYWATCH ACADEMY    THE SOVEREIGN SEVEN

Orientation in the East Hall gave Marlowe her first proper look at the Sovereign Seven as a unit, and she spent the better part of an hour cataloguing them from her position at the back of the packed room, unable to shake the feeling that she was studying for an exam nobody had told her she'd be taking."That's Cressida Winthrop," Talia murmured, following her gaze toward the silver-haired girl seated at Emeric's right hand, spine straight, expression carved from something notably colder than boredom. "Emeric's second. Don't cross her. She doesn't forgive, and she definitely doesn't forget.""Noted.""Beside her — Julian Everhart. Charming, funny, the kind of cruel that gets laughed off because he delivers it with a smile." Talia's voice dropped further. "Don't mistake the smile for safety."Marlowe followed her gaze to a boy leaning back in his seat with easy, unbothered confidence, already making the students around him laugh at something she couldn't hear, though his eyes kept drif

  • CROWNLESS AT GREYWATCH ACADEMY    THE REGISTRATION HALL

Talia Draycott found her twenty minutes later, still standing exactly where Emeric had left her, and took one look at Marlowe's expression before sighing with the particular weariness of someone who already suspected what had happened."You met Emeric," Talia said. It wasn't a question."I refused to kneel at the gate."Talia's eyebrows climbed. "Nobody refuses that. Not on the first day. Most Unranked students don't even know they're allowed to refuse — they just do it because nobody's told them otherwise, and by the time they figure out it's optional, the precedent's already set for the rest of the year.""Nobody explained why I should. I don't grovel for unexplained reasons." Marlowe fell into step beside her, grateful for a familiar face after the unsettling weight of Emeric's attention. "Is that going to be a problem?""Depends how you define problem," Talia said. "It's already made you memorable, which at Greywatch is rarely a neutral thing to be. I'm Talia, by the way. Draycott

  • CROWNLESS AT GREYWATCH ACADEMY    UNRANKED

The iron gates of Greywatch Academy were carved with wolves that had too many teeth and birds with wings folded wrong, and Marlowe Kestrel decided, staring up at them, that she refused to be intimidated by architecture designed specifically to intimidate her."You're supposed to kneel," said the girl checking names at the entrance table, not looking up from her ledger. "New Unranked intake kneel at the threshold. It's tradition.""I wasn't told that.""It's tradition," the girl repeated, as though repetition alone might make Marlowe's spine bend. "Every Unranked student for two hundred years has knelt at this gate before entering."Marlowe looked past her, toward the crowd of students already flowing through the gates unbothered — crisp uniforms, gold and silver crests catching the flat morning light, none of them kneeling, none of them so much as pausing. "I'll pass," she said, and walked through the gate standing exactly as tall as she'd been standing a moment before.Behind her, sh
