The Battle for Carinthia
Hadrian drew his sword and fought along with his men in the front of the battle. He breathed; this was different from what he trained for. He trained with his soldiers for a time like this. And it all came down to this one moment.
'As I thought,' he thought. 'A real battle is indeed different.' He looked ahead as both sides clashed. He clashed with the Alexia's men. His drawn sword glimmered and blurred as he swung it to his adversaries. He felt as if time has slowed, men are shouting on all sides at once and pointing their muskets and swords at the men opposite their sides. As his sword descended, time sped up and everything was going too fast for him to keep up. He kept pushing forward and he found himself in the middle surrounded by his guards.

Catherine looked unbelievably at her grandfather, she thought her grandparents have already accepted her engagement with Hadrian, but what she heard is different. ‘This not what was agreed!’ she not raising her voice, but the aggravation in her voice is evident. ‘Emperor Josef Hadrian is my betrothed, is he not?’ ‘I have retracted my stance on that matter, Catherine.’ King Henrik answered, looking at her strictly. As soon as they returned to the capital, Hadrian was met with paperwork after paperwork, and he was again buried in a mountain of paper in his office. He sighed exasperatedly and almost has his head on the table as he fills in what needed to be changed in the document he is reading. Hadrian was feelingdejectedwhen he went to his garden to tend to it. He looked around and he thought that the gardener dida good job. This should have made him happy, but his chest feels heavy that he could not even smile. Finding no motivation to do what he came to do, he just sat on the bench looking at the trees and then he stood up to walk. After a while he found himself in the fountain, he blinked and looked around wondering what he was doing there.‘Ah, there you are.’ A familiar voice called out and Hadrian turned to see Albert approaching him. ‘I was delayed for a bit, sorry to have kept you waiting.’

Henrik paced back and forth waiting for news of Catherine’s whereabouts; agitated at his men’s slow response, he kept asking his butler of news from the search party, he gave orders after orders and after more than a half hour later, the soldiers that came and he received reports from soldiers who were scurrying in and out of the office. Valdemar stood beside him just looking at the men as they talk to the King. His eyes were angry, but not because of the soldiers, but because of Catherine running away. His plans to finally become a royal have been thwarted. He went to a man standing close to him and whispered something and left soon after. In his mind he planned to make Catherine marry him when she returns.

Valdemar pulled the trigger of the gun he grabbed from the guard, aiming intently at Catherine and as he shot, Hadrian went between him and Catherine and the bullet hit Hadrian’s left chest and he fell on the ground, he pointed the gun at Hadrian once more and shot him a second time, this time, hitting him in his left shoulder. The guards pinned Valdemar down and kicked the gun aside, Albert pulled out his sword and is about to lunge at the duke, but Ivan stopped him. ‘You cannot do anything rash; our position is already sensitive as it is.’ Ivan told Albert who’s fuming in anger. ‘Hadrian!’ Catherine shouted and kneeled beside Hadrian who is bleeding on the floor. She carefully cradled his head as the others scrambled to call for a doctor. ‘Hadrian, please wake up!’ Hadrian huffed and coughed. They looked closely at his chest and curiously there was not a drop of blood on his clothes. He winced at the pain on his shoulder and knew he was shot there.

Hadrian rode out to meet his uncle who has camped in the border of his own kingdom. The older King met his nephew with a smile and wide arms. King Wilhelm stands a head taller than Hadrian, a great man with a muscular build. ‘Hadrian, my boy!’ King Wilhelm greeted Hadrian smiling widely. ‘I was expecting you to send a messenger, but here you are! The emperor himself! I trust you bring news?’ ‘I have uncle, and hopefully we are to meet King Henrik tomorrow.’ Hadrian answered after dismounting his horse.

A guard opened the gates to the Amalienborg Palace to let the King of Prussia and his entourage in. Catherine rose to her feet upon the sight of the young emperor and rushed over to meet them. Hadrian stopped his horse with a grimace on his face, she immediately saw the red blotch on his shoulder. His wound has reopened due to the strain of the several hours long horse ride. His expression told Catherine that his wound is hurting, she helped him as his struggled to dismount his horse. ‘Your Majesty!’ Anton called, running to his master. ‘Your wound!’

A young boy ran through the halls of Schönbrunn Palace chased by a man wearing black. The boy shouted happily, playing as he goes. His giggles and laughs filled the hallway, that it is almost infectious if it were not so early in the morning. ‘Your Highness, please don’t run!’ A young Anton called, chasing the young prince. ‘Prince Hadrian! Please wait!’ ‘I’m right here, Anton!’ Hadrian called, waving his hand at the older man who is trying to catch his breath. Young Hadrian ran off again as Josef walked up beside Anton. ‘Brother has run off again.’ Josef said. ‘Oh, Your Highness,’ Anton said, turning to Josef’s direction and bowed at him. ‘My apologies, I did not notice you there.’ ‘It is alright.’ Josef answered in a wistful tone with a book in hand. ‘He is giving you a hard time again.’ ‘It is quite fine, Your Highness.
