MELANIE’S POV

Tiana’s words came rushing back to me. Everything she had told me. Everything I had refused to believe. “Did you mean any of that?”

My father stiffened. “Melanie—”

“Wasn’t I supposed to hear this?”

“Melanie, listen to me.”

“And please…” My voice trembled. “I need to know the truth.” He stared at me. “Why did you let me marry Jethro?”

The question came out sharper than I intended. He sighed.

“Because he was the only one who could save you.” I stared at him.

“Save me?”

“Yes

  • Caged By His Love   Who are they?

MELANIE'S POVMy father came to the house that afternoon, looking like he hadn't slept at all, his eyes red-rimmed, his hands trembling faintly as he sat across from Jethro's desk."I need to know what happens to me now," he said quietly. "For giving those names to men who turned out to still be loyal to Rodrigo.""Nothing happens to you," Jethro said, though his voice carried none of its usual warmth toward my father, only a kind of exhausted, careful neutrality. "You made a mistake trusting people you thought had left that world behind. It's a mistake, not a betrayal.""It nearly cost us everything.""It nearly cost us everything because Rodrigo is patient and thorough, not because you were reckless." Jethro's jaw tightened. "I've made my own mistakes in this fight. I underestimated how far he was willing to plan ahead. That miscalculation is as much to blame for last night as your two names."I watched my father absorb that, watched some of the crushing guilt in his posture ease, j

MELANIE'S POVRocco came out of surgery a little after three in the morning.I sat with Jethro in the hospital's private waiting room, a space reserved for exactly the kind of family that could afford to reserve an entire wing on short notice, and watched him pace the same six feet of carpet over and over while we waited for news. Lycan sat in the corner, silent, still in his torn tuxedo, staring at nothing."He's stable," the surgeon said, when she finally appeared in the doorway, her scrubs still damp with sweat. "One bullet nicked his lung. The other missed anything vital by less than an inch. He's going to need weeks of recovery, but he's going to live."Jethro's shoulders sagged, just slightly, the first visible relief I'd seen from him since the ballroom went dark. "Can we see him?""Briefly. He's heavily sedated."We found Rocco in a recovery room, tubes and monitors surrounding him, his usually sharp face slack with anesthesia. Jethro stood over the bed for a long moment, his

  • Caged By His Love   Broken

MELANIE'S POV I couldn't move. The violin case lay open on the hallway floor, its faded velvet lining cradling a single white rose and a folded piece of paper, and I stood over it with Jethro's hand wrapped around mine, unable to make my legs carry me any closer. I hadn't seen that case in years. I had buried it at the very back of the nursery closet, behind stacks of tiny folded clothes we'd bought in the hopeful weeks before the miscarriage, because I couldn't bear to look at either one. The violin and the baby clothes. The two things I'd loved most, the two things I'd lost most completely, sharing the same dark corner of the same silent room. "He was in the nursery," I whispered. "Yes." Jethro's voice was rough. "The whole upstairs was searched. Rocco must have surprised them while they were still inside, because they ran without finishing whatever they came to do. But they had time to do this first." "How did he know?" My voice cracked. "How did he know it was there? Nobod

MELANIE'S POVI have never known a car ride to last as long as that one.The SUV tore through the city at speeds I would have found terrifying on any other night, weaving between traffic, running lights, its engine roaring as the driver pushed it to its limits. Streetlights smeared across the tinted windows like long gold brushstrokes. The city outside seemed impossibly ordinary — couples walking hand in hand, a man walking his dog, a late-night diner glowing warmly on a corner — while inside the vehicle, none of us spoke.Jethro held me the entire way, his arm locked around my shoulders, my head tucked against his chest. I could hear his heartbeat, fast and hard, at odds with the perfect stillness of his face. He was on his phone almost constantly, issuing terse commands in a voice so low and controlled it frightened me more than shouting would have."Rocco, report."A pause. Then, "Copy. Do not engage. I repeat, do not engage

  • Caged By His Love   The gala was never the target

MELANIE'S POVThe car made its fourth pass at exactly 9:42.I knew because I'd been watching the clock above the ballroom's east doors for the last eleven minutes, counting the seconds the way I used to count measures before a difficult solo, trying to keep my mind anchored to something steady while the rest of me hummed with dread."Fourth pass confirmed," a voice murmured through the tiny earpiece Jethro had insisted I wear beneath my hair. I couldn't hear Brandon's exact words, only the low rhythm of them, but Jethro's hand tightened around mine in response, and I understood the message anyway."Same vehicle?" Jethro asked, barely moving his lips."Same vehicle," came the reply, quiet enough that only he could hear it. "Plates changed since the last pass. Driver hasn't gotten out.""Hold," Jethro said. "Whatever he's waiting for, I want to see it."I tried to keep my face pleasant, the way I'd practiced in the mirror that afternoon, smiling at a woman in a silver gown who was telli
