Dante’s POV
I sat in my office drumming my fingers incessantly on the mahogany tables. The polished sheen surface reflecting the frown on my face. He was late. Baron Pascal that is. The lousy bastard who thought he could do as he liked and go scot free. Not in my world. Not on my terms. A knock came on the door and in walked Isabella. She strolled to a stop in front of my desk. “Pascal called to say he’s on his way.” “What does the fucker think this is? His kid’s birthday?” I couldn’t help but scoff. “I doubt he thinks less of you Dante. But I have to say,” I met Isabella’s eyes with a raised brow. “The underlings have been moving a bit too loose lately.” “Don’t remind me. It’s starting to make me trigger happy.” “Admirable but undavisable.” She kept a curt smile on her face. “You can be annoying at times Bella.” “I try my best.” she swept her hair behind her shoulder. “We can shoot Pascal after he gives us what we need. I’ll even pick out the gun.” “Of course you will.” I chuckled. Out of all the guys in the building, Bella was the closest thing to a friend. She kept things professional between us but still maintained a friendly undertone. We’d been like this since we were much younger. She’d been by my side longer than the other two idiots. “He’s here.” She informed me while glancing at her phone. “Fucking finally.” My fingers drummed against the desk some more. “Should I go accompany him?” “He has a brain. Let him use it for once.” Bella hummed finding a place next to the desk to stand as we awaited Baron. No sooner than later a knock came. Baron stepped in with two of his lackeys not too far behind. I kept my lips tight. Offence on my turf? The neantherdal must have lost the brain I thought he had. “Boss.” He greeted. His accent permeating the cool air. I nodded to the brown leather chairs set a few metres from my desk. The small man took a seat, relaxing into it like he owned the place. “You’re late.” I stated. “Sorry about that Boss, the traffic in this city is fucking hell I tell ya.” “Are you making excuses?” I met his eyes, he didn’t break eye contact. “Nothing like that Boss. Just stating a point.” My head pulsed. This bastard was giving me a headache. I grimaced at his audacity. I had begun to wonder why all these underlings shared the same brain cell. It was one to the next with them. And to say my patience was tested was the least of it. I watched him settle a little more into his seat. Rubbing his stubble with his knuckles. “I didn’t expect such a call on short notice boss. It aint like you.” “Telling me how to behave Pascal?” “Nothing like that boss. Just that with everything going on and the feds sniffing up some people’s asses lately, it was a lil’ unexpected.” “The feds should be the least of your worries.” My voice was low and firm. I’m who you should be worried about, you fat pig. “They aint. Just saying--” “I believe in transparency when we have dealings Baron. You know that. I shouldn’t remind you.” I drummed my fingers on my desk again, already fed up of having to humour the idiot. Baron nodded, the motion almost frantic. “I know, Boss. I don’t need no reminders.” “So what happened with you and Diego? You took my money and I saw nothing.” “Boss, to be honest with you.” his face twisted in a crooked grin. “I had no idea what the fuck went on.” “Hmm?” I raised a brow. “My guys got there when them assholes were going ballistic. We couldn’t get anything while they were in the thick of it. Safe to say, it isn’t our fault them asshats decided to go guns blazing.” “So…” I trailed off. My eyes barely squinted on his too amused face. “We’ve got nothing.” I begged to differ. Diego and the serpents pull off a stunt like that and my goods go missing? Baron was a rat. A thieving rat. He adjusted himself in the seat, the same stupid grin on his face. “I don’t want to be that guy boss. The bearer of bad news, but it’s gotta be said--” “It isn’t a complete deal if we don’t have the drugs we paid you for.” Bella interrupted. Baron glared up at her. “You trying to be smart mouthy? You broads should know better than to talk when men talk.” I sat back. I knew men like Baron like the back of my palm. Conniving and clever when it came to making a quick easy buck, but when it was with women, he was one track minded and stuck in the stone age. No wonder his wife left him. That useless mindset of his would be his reckoning. I opened my mouth to speak. “Men, get this floosy outta here.” He ordered to his lackeys. Isabella glanced at me and we had a second of understanding. “My apologies sir.” She said to me. “Take your time.” I replied. Pacal’s men and Bella met in the middle of the room. I simply grinned to myself. They were in for it. As the two men attempted to grab her she made her move. Quick and sufficient. Knocking one of the men over and back into the side of the bar. She grabbed the other pinning him to the floor. The other guy stumbled to his feet, pulling out a gun from under his shirt. Isabella rammed her feet into the incoming lackey’s knee, disarming him with one swift motion. She pointed the gun at that one man, removing the handgun secured in the second one’s holster. Baron stood to protest when Isabella pointed the gun straight at his forehead stopping him in his tracks. “One muscle out of place from either of you, and I blow your brains out.” She informed all three men. Baron settled back into his seat. I stood from my chair, rounded the table and sat right on the edge so I could face the son of a bitch. “Now, shall we begin?” I asked rolling up my sleeves. I watched the poor sucker stare up at me with worried eyes. Like I said. I should’ve been the top of his worries.Dante's POVThe moment Kerry had taken Lily from the room I drank two more glasses of wine. I wouldn't lie and say Lily wasn't a looker. She was. Up close, she was something to look at. Definitely not cute like Kerry said. Perfect for the job she was going into. She'd attract those men like bees and they'd flock to her and she'd be out of my hair soon enough. “Should you be drinking so much this early in the morning sir?” Alessandro asked. He'd stood and watched the whole scene play out in here for the past few minutes. So silent that I had forgotten he was in the room. “I think I can handle it, Alessandro.”“I'm less worried about the alcohol and more about your state of mind.”“My state of mind has never been better Alessandro. No need to worry about me. You, on the other hand, need to take some vacation days.” “I'm quite healthy sir.” He pressed. I exhaled. A knock came at the door and in walked Bella and Matteo. “Good morning Boss,” Matteo greeted. “What's the situation?” I
Lily's POVI hated the way they stared at me like I was a piece of meat. I didn't know when I stopped protesting the words that came out of his mouth. Something about his words made me realize how final it was. Dad was a deadbeat and I was done for. I was about to be in a strip club serving all kinds of people.“I must really be cursed.” I muttered to myself in the back seat of the sedan car I'd been forced into about an hour earlier. “I really must be fucking cursed.” First it was mom telling us she been having an affair for about two years. Well, telling us was a stretch. Dad had found them in bed after an early return from a business trip. She held no remorse for her actions in fact she went as far as to reveal to us she was pregnant with his kid. I didn't want a new dad, or a new sibling without my dad and they split. I was sixteen. Six years later and it still hurt like a bitch. As if to make even more fun of me Dad's deteriorating condition came next. He couldn't handle losin
Dante's POVI had to laugh at the look on her face. From the very moment she stepped into the room she looked like a mouse that had winded up in a terribly elaborate trap.“Wouldn't you like to know?” I said. “I would…. actually.” She replied, her voice small. “Eat up.” I pointed my knife at her plate. She visibly swallowed gingerly picking up the utensil from the dining table. She still hesitated. “If I wanted you dead you would've been two weeks ago. Your daddy dearest has been owing me for a long while. So,” I sliced my food, the aluminium screeching on the ceramic. She flinched at the sound. “Eat up.”I chewed watching her take small bites. Her soft features would be a great attraction for customers when she started. I almost pitied her. Let her go? I chuckled to myself again. “Your time's up.” I stated. Her head jerked up, wide hazel eyes staring back into mine. I could see the fear, but it wasn't quite enough for me. “What? You shouldn't be surprised. You and I both know
Lily's POVI paced about the room rapidly. Left to right. Left to right. And left to right again. This wasn't really happening was it? I facepalmed.“Of course it's happening.” I said out loud. I glanced out at the birdcage barricades on the windows. The hours had gone by. My time limit was up. But I'd been a sitting duck for about God knows how long. No nothing. Just Rosa dropping off food and excusing herself. Since putting me here she rarely engaged in more conversation than necessary. I knew nothing. But then I had started to think, if I did get all this information, what was I going to use it for? I had no way out of here. I dug my hands into my hair breathing hard. “Calm down Lily. It's not the end of the world just yet.” I tried to calm myself, but my voice came out shaky. A knock came at the door. I stared at the door handle expecting….just expecting. Rosa walked into the room, her face greeting mine with a soft smile. She had no tray with her. Something was wrong. “Is th
Dante’s POVI adjusted my position against the desk folding my arms across my chest. Matteo relaxed into the chair running a hand through his spiky hair. “This Justin guy is a whole lot of shit encapsulated. He’s been on everybody’s ass. Deeper than we thought.” He started with a soft smirk.“Not just the syndicate and the politicians? What else does this son of a bitch have on people?”“Millionaires, businessmen, even your average joe at the corner shop has dirt that this bastard can find.” I shared a glance with Bella who raised a brow sharing my impression. Impressive. No wonder the syndicate wanted him gone. What could he possibly have on them? That, I wanted to know.“So asides from finding out he’s volatile what else? We don’t have all day you know? I don’t.”“Does that explain the shirt?” he pointed to my bloodied shirt.“Ghost.” I warned.“Alright, alright. Justin Harris, middle age, works for the Herald News as some freelance investigative reporter. He’s got the rep as we k
Dante’s POVThe drive back here should’ve calmed me down but it did nothing. I just received another phone call from another one of my underlings and no surprise when I learnt there was another issue going on. I swear if I had a dollar for every second those bastards pissed me off I would have more money in addition to what I already have. Those dipshits just couldn’t do anything right.I entered my main hall leading to my office, my men who walked through sidestepped and gave me a curt bow as I passed. I entered the office with Bella right behind me shutting the door. “If those shits keep up their acts I’m going to die before Uncle Rosco. Except I’ll shoot myself.” I grumbled. “Your uncle Rosco is still alive. I think you mean Charlie.” Bella commented.“No, the bastard is very much dead. Charlie’s the cookie cutter half brother who took his place. People call him Rosco just to make him pissed off. Don’t go asking for a bullet to the skull Bella.”“Noted.”“Where the fuck is Matteo
