Chapter 1

ALLIE

“Here’s your card, Ma’am,” the cashier handed me my credit card as I went to the other lane to finally get my order. I immediately grabbed the paper bag and walked towards the doorway. My phone lit up and immediate panic rushed through my body. It was my mother-in-law calling.

I closed my eyes and sighed deeply before taking the call.

“Hello?”

“Allie, where the fuck are you?”

“I’m in the pastry shop,” I replied, swallowing the lump in my throat. I already knew she would react this way the moment she found out I’m out of the house. I really hate this feeling. That house felt like a prison to me and I always felt the urge to run away whenever I got the chance to.

“Who told you you can go out? You didn’t even let me know you went out? Such a rude woman! I regret allowing Daniel to marry a woman like you.” Mrs. Smith hissed.

Exhaustion beats at  every nerve in my body. Back then, when Daniel and I were living  in our home just the two of us, I never felt this burning feeling in my chest. But when his mother decided to live with us after his father’s death, everything seemed to change.

I never felt at peace anymore. The house that was meant for Daniel and I suddenly became unfamiliar to me. And I couldn’t do anything about it. I tried talking to Daniel, but he’s out of touch. When his father died, he became busier. He has to take care of his own business and his father’s. He rarely comes home. If he does, two days a week would be a maximum. I miss my husband a lot. I wish we could go back to the days when we used to cuddle in bed nonstop and talk about random things while eating our dinner.

“Come home now, we have a visitor. I need you to cook for us!”

My stomach churned up upon hearing those words. Yes, of course, she only calls me whenever she needs me. I rushed home because if I didn’t appear in front of her in any minute by now, she'd be furious. The moment I entered the front door, I immediately smelled a familiar lady scent from the living area. There were two people chatting nonstop and giggling on the sofa. They’re enjoying their chatting session and seemed to not notice me at all.

I cleared my throat. “Mrs. Smith,” I called her attention. Both of them stopped talking and looked at me with disdain in their eyes. As if I did a bad thing by getting her attention.

“Oh, you’re home,” Sofia cringed, scrunching her nose and adjusting the way she sits on the sofa.

Sofia was Daniel's friend when he was in college. By the look of it, surely Mrs. Smith still favors Sofia for her son. Mrs. Smith stood up and rushed to me. She’s darting me with an evil look and I couldn’t help but to be nervous. I hope she won't hurt me today. I could take a hundred painful words from her but not anything physical. For some reason, the past few days have been very exhausting to me.

“You’re late. I told you not to go anywhere! Look at this house, every corner has some sort of dirt. You’re not doing your job as a woman in this house.”

My face fell. I expected a humiliation from her and I got what I expected. Now I only end up in a crushing disappointment. I saw Sofia grinned. I looked away, spotting her necklace that suits her beautifully.

“I’m really sorry, Mrs. Smith. I’ll just put this in the kitchen and I will clean the house right away.”

I walked towards the kitchen, stepping into the afternoon light that painted the sink with a comforting glow, and sighed in a slight relief. I miss home. I wish I could go back to my parents' home in Aspen. Life was way much easier living in our old house. My life turned out miserable when they died in a car crash when I turned 19. I could’ve stayed in Aspen. Had I not sold our house and lived in Denver, my life wouldn’t have turned out like this.

Daniel offered me a comfortable life and yet this is what I get. But I love him. I love him so much that even when I could run away, I chose to stay with him.

“Aren’t you done cooking? We’re hungry!” a shout from my back made me tremble in panic.

I turned around and saw Mrs. Smith with a brow raised and both hands on her hips. Her unsatisfied expression can be seen in her face.

“I’m almost done,” I said in a shaky voice. I still tried making it firm but I am much more nervous today than any normal day. What is wrong with me? I feel so vulnerable. Even my body is so tired and it’s not cooperating. For many times, a spoon slipped to my hand going directly to the sink. And another spoon slipped. I muttered a curse under my breath. It slipped out of my mouth before I could sensor myself. Guess my filter was just as shaky as my emotion.

“Sorry.” I turned to face my mother-in-law and she’s much disappointed now as she was a minute ago.

“Finish that in five minutes or else–” she didn’t continue her statement instead she narrowed her eyes on me. I knew what she'd do. She will make me clean the entire house and make her as a slave whenever she wishes to.

I blinked and then got back to the pan with water and pasta. I need to finish this as soon as possible. I do not wish to work nonstop. If I need to please Mrs. Smith with my work, I’d do it even if it’s against my will.

As soon as I finished putting the chicken pasta on the plate, I rushed towards the living area with two plates in both hands. Mrs. Smith was smiling ear to ear and grabbed the plate on my left hand hastily. In a split second, I saw the broken pieces of plate down the floor and the thin strands of pasta and the red sauce scattered all over her cream-colored pants.
