Cora's POV

A few days later, Liam and my parents join me for my first baby doctor appointment — not to support me, of course, but to make sure everything is perfect for Iris’s cure.

Ever since I uncovered the truth, a strange, stifling tension hangs between us, thick and suffocating, and no one knows how to break it.

“We should have a baby shower!” Iris’s excited voice bounces off the sterile walls of the obstetrician’s office.

She’s the only one untouched by the tension, beaming with the pure certainty that she’s the center of everyone’s love.

“Of course we should,” Liam agrees indulgently, shooting her a warm smile — even as it’s my baby’s silhouette glowing on the ultrasound screen.

“That’s a wonderful idea, Iris,” my mother adds, her voice saccharine.

I clench my jaw as the cool gel slides across my exposed stomach.

No one even asks what I think. Why would they? I’m just the vessel.

It’s fine. I’ve been preparing for this.

If anything, a public baby shower gives me the perfect window to disappear.

“That sounds lovely!” I chirp, injecting fake cheer into my voice as I stare up at the screen.

I need to get out of here. For me. For my baby.

“I’m glad you’re finally on the same page as the rest of us,” Liam says, his voice steel under velvet.

“Your child appears perfectly healthy so far,” the pack doctor cuts in.

“Seven, maybe eight weeks along. Vitals are excellent. Development is fully on track. We’ll schedule another checkup in a couple weeks, but for now, everything’s perfect.”

My parents sag into each other, tears of relief brimming in their eyes. Liam flashes Iris another brilliant smile.

Meanwhile, I lie there, feeling like a ghost at my own child’s celebration.

The doctor switches off the machine, wipes my stomach, and the appointment ends.

***

That evening, the party kicks into full swing.

The pack house’s ballroom buzzes with the mingled scents and chatter of Snowcrest and Bloodthorn members.

I spend the beginning of the night on Liam’s arm, smiling mechanically as strangers offer their congratulations and reach for my stomach like I’m some communal talisman.

Each touch makes my skin crawl. I blink rapidly and step aside, feigning dizziness.

After about half an hour, Liam finally notices.

“Are you alright?” he asks sharply. “If something’s wrong, you should see the doctor immediately—”

“Just tired,” I assure him with a small, exhausted smile. “Pregnancy is taxing, you know. Would you mind if I went upstairs to rest?”

“Whatever you need to do for the baby’s health,” he replies.

His gaze has already slid past me, locking onto Iris across the room.

Of course.

We all know this party isn’t really for me.

Without waiting for his permission, I slip away.

This moment — the moment I’ve been waiting for — has arrived.

In our bedroom, I swap my gown for loose pants, a tunic, and soft-soled shoes I stashed away days ago.

I pocket the small bag of essentials I’d hidden under the bed — some money, an old map, and a vial of protective herbs Elder Maren once gave me — and head out through the servants’ corridor, heart hammering in my chest.

The front foyer is empty.

Everyone is too busy celebrating.

I cut across the courtyard and head straight for the Bloodthorn border.

Almost there.

Almost free.

Only a few guards stand watch, shadows against the treeline.

I slow from a frantic run to a confident stride, shoulders squared. The small pouch hidden beneath my jacket presses against my ribs — everything I need for the road ahead, packed days ago, just in case.

“I am Luna Cora. I need to retrieve something important from the Bloodthorn pack,” I announce, my voice sharp and commanding.

One of the guards hesitates, brow furrowed.

“Luna, I think I should confirm with Alpha—”

I cut him off coldly. “Are you questioning my authority?”

They stiffen. Lower their heads. Step aside.

But as I move forward, a flicker of hesitation roots me to the spot. If I waste another second here... Liam will realize I'm missing from the pack house. He'll come after me.

Jaw tight, I shove the doubt aside. No more waiting. No more second chances. I surge forward, pushing through the border before they can change their minds.

I don’t waste a second.

I’m through the border before they can react.

But just as my foot touches Bloodthorn soil, a voice slices through the night.

“Cora!”

My heart leaps into my throat.

Liam.

“Stop!” he roars, his voice laced with Alpha power.

I run harder.

I’m not stopping. Not for him. Not for anyone.

His footsteps thunder behind me. I can almost feel his hand reaching for my wrist—

Suddenly, a mind-link tears through my thoughts — the Beta’s voice, urgent but deeply respectful, speaking to both of us at once:

‘Forgive me, Alpha, Luna. Iris just collapsed. You are needed immediately.’

I glance back.

Liam’s eyes blaze in the darkness, torn between two instincts.

For a single, suspended moment, we lock eyes.

The wind howls between us. My lungs burn.

And then he makes his choice.

Without a word, he turns and sprints back toward Snowcrest.

Leaving me standing there, breathless and alone.

Relief crashes over me so hard it leaves me dizzy.

I’m free.

But in the same heartbeat, a jagged pain tears through my chest.

He didn’t choose me.

He never chose me.

I was never his mate, not really. Just a means to an end.

A sob chokes in my throat, but I push it down.

I run, deeper into the woods, farther from the pack and everything that ever hurt me.

***

The forest is endless.

Each step pulls me further from the life I once knew.

But somewhere between the trees, I lose my bearings.

The towering pines blur together, identical and unyielding. Panic claws at my chest.

I force myself to stop. To listen.

My own heartbeat thrums wildly in my ears.

And then—

Something else.

A scent.

Crisp fir, earth, and something unmistakably male.

It cuts through the woods like a blade, unfamiliar and alarming.

I tense, instincts flaring.

I’m not part of a pack anymore.

I’m just a rogue now.

And rogues are prey.

A sick realization knots my stomach.

The undergrowth at my feet — thick with silverleaf vines — only grows in one place.

The stories flood back, chilling my blood.

I’ve wandered into the Moongrove Pack’s territory.

The strongest, most ruthless pack on the continent.

A pack that executes trespassers on sight.

Cold sweat beads along my spine.

I have to get out. Now.

I whirl around, breath hitching, ready to bolt —

When a figure steps from the shadows.

Broad shoulders.

Unhurried stride.

Moonlight catches the edges of him — all darkness and danger wrapped in effortless grace.

Before I can even draw a breath to scream, a voice — deep, rough, velvet-edged and lethal — slides through the gloom.

“I’ve been waiting for you, mate.

  • Carrying the Alpha’s Baby, But He Loves My Twin   Chapter 60: Ceasefire

Liam's POVAs Iris and I are eating breakfast one morning, a warrior suddenly walks into the room, stone-faced with a letter in hand. “This was just delivered from the Moongrove pack,” the warriors says gravely. At the mention of the Moongrove pack, sheer rage boils in the bit of my stomach. I bare my teeth in distaste. This whole debacle with William Ashford was the last straw–not only did Jasper refuse my exchange offer, he had the nerve to threaten me with a full Werewolf Council investigation. And despite complying with his demands, Cora still isn’t in my hands. Iris is dying. I need to save her. I need to fix this. “Bring me a letter opener,” I demand. Iris looks up at me over the table, eyes sad, but she doesn’t say anything. Once the letter and small blade have been placed before me, I slice the envelope open in a single smooth motion. My hands tremble with rage as I expect to see yet another foolish demand from Alpha Jasper, but when I see Cora’s elegant looping cursive

  • Carrying the Alpha’s Baby, But He Loves My Twin   Chapter 59: Runaway

Cora's POVThere’s a small path near the edge of the Moongrove pack’s territory, close to the forest. I capture its location in my mind, planning out my route. The path will lead out towards the eastern continent–a land filled with untouched mountains, lakes, and rivers. There aren’t a lot of packs living out that way–and even the ones that do won’t know who I am. Maybe it’s the fresh start I need. I stand in the center of my room and ponder my plan. There’s going to be a small dinner this evening–just me, Jasper, Felicity, Gamma Rogers, and Beta Smith. I’ll find a way to slip away quietly and head back to my room early, then regroup there. I stack a bundle of clothes as well as some rations and tools in the corner of my wardrobe, then cover them with dirty laundry to keep them hidden and avoid suspicion. I’m sure there’s stuff I’m forgetting. I’m sure there’s lots more I need. But right now, the most important thing is that I get away from here. That evening, I sit with everyon

  • Carrying the Alpha’s Baby, But He Loves My Twin   Chapter 58: The Only Option

Cora's POV“He’s no longer of any use to us. Execute him.”Jasper’s words echo through my mind relentlessly as I make my way back to the pack house with everyone else, and I can’t help but worry about what they mean. The interrogation is over now–there’s nothing more we can get from William Ashford. And now, according to the deal, Jasper is supposed to hand me over to Liam. Jasper had told me before that he was still thinking it over, but I have no idea whether he’s truly lost in thought or if he’s already made up his mind. The decision to dispose of Ashford so permanently certainly indicates that he knows what he’s going to do. But what? As much as it pains me, I have absolutely no idea what Jasper’s true intentions are. “No doubt it’s been a trying day for everyone,” Jasper says. “I’ve had the maids prepare us a feast in the dining hall. Please, enjoy.” I walk down the hallways with everyone else, heading to the dining hall and wishing I could pull my thoughts out of this doom

  • Carrying the Alpha’s Baby, But He Loves My Twin   Chapter 57: Always Hope

Cora's POVAs we step out of the dungeon, I’m still rattled by everything I’ve just seen. “That was… I say slowly, glancing over at Jasper. He nods. “You okay?”“Yeah,” I reply. “We did what was necessary. I just… I’ve never been through anything like that before.” “I understand,” Jasper says. I hadn’t expected Jasper’s infamous reputation to be more effective than me stabbing the guy. Once Jasper had stepped in, though, the interrogation went by like it was nothing. It had gone surprisingly smoothly after that. William Ashford had spilled everything–his accomplices, their secret codes, the locations of their operations…All of it. When I found out that Liam truly hadn’t been involved with any of the terrible things Teresa had been put through, I was surprised by the wave of relief that washed over me. I’m still trying to figure out what it means. Why do I care if he’s a good person or not? Why do I still want to think the best of him, despite everything that’s happened? Maybe…

  • Carrying the Alpha’s Baby, But He Loves My Twin   Chapter 56: Torture

Cora's POVI wait for Jasper to argue with me, but he doesn’t seem to have an intention of stopping me. The three of us rush to the dungeon. I’ve never been down here before, but there’s something haunting about the way the torchlight flickers along the stone walls, the distant sounds of rattling chains. Shivers run down my spine as we head down a long spiral flight of stairs. By the time we make our way to William’s cell, Teresa and her parents are already waiting for us, and Gamma Roger stands stiffly to the side. As soon as Gamma Roger sees us, he makes his way towards Jasper. “Kept this bastard all up,” he says, nodding towards the figure curled up in the cell. “I’d say he’s damn near close to dropping from exhaustion.”Jasper nods. “Excellent work, Gamma.” “He’s all yours,” Gamma Roger says. “I’m off to run morning drills with the warriors.” With that, he walks off into the distance, leaving the rest of us to stare at the prisoner in wait. I can’t help but be impressed by h

  • Carrying the Alpha’s Baby, But He Loves My Twin   Chapter 55: Used

Cora's POVI can’t even begin to fathom how much of a jerk Jasper really is. “Give me a kiss and I’ll tell you,” he’d said. So I kiss him. I lean in close and press my lips against his and wrap my arms around his shoulders. The kiss feels like it burns, an undeniable passion for better or for worse. He grabs my waist and pins me against the desk possessively, and I can feel it in how he touches me, in how he holds me–Jasper knows I’m his. He’s just toying with me at this point. But once I break the kiss, I look up at him with wide, expectant eyes. “Tell me your decision,” I demand. Jasper smirks, pulling away and leaving me sitting on the desk. “I don’t think so,” he replies.“Tell me,” I snap, blood beginning to boil. What could he possibly stand to gain by batting me around like this? “I’m not telling you anything,” Jasper says.Somehow, that’s the last straw. Frustrated and angry enough to do something I’d otherwise regret, I leap off the desk and make my way towards the
