Castle.

It had been four days since Adriana fell. Four long, blurry, back-to-back days that bled into each other like watercolor on wet paper. I hadn’t left her side since. Not once. Not even for air.

She was discharged this morning. The doctors said she needed to be monitored constantly by someone she trusted, someone close.

And well, that person had to be me. Not because I was the most qualified, or the most available, but because she asked.

I’d like to say I was there out of obligation, or guilt. But the truth is, she was hurting. And I couldn’t turn my back on her. Not in that kind of pain. Not after everything.

She lost her baby. I haven’t said that out loud yet. I’m not even sure I’ve let myself feel it fully.

There just hasn’t been time. Not between hospital lights and sleepless nights and the sound of her crying all the damn time.

Right now, I was carrying a bowl of soup to her room. Chicken and vegetables. Tomas made it, bless him. That man was doing everything—running the b

Angel. The scream split through the air, and for a second, I thought it came from me.Castle froze. His hand was still in mine. But his eyes went wide and hollow. Like he already knew.We both moved at the same time, no words, just instinct. Like muscle memory. I ran faster down the flight of stairs. I don’t even know why.I got there first, and the world just tilted.Adriana was crumpled at the bottom of the stairs, like a broken doll somebody had dropped too hard. Her hands were on her stomach. Her dress was soaked through with blood—thick and dark and spreading too fast. She was crying. No, wailing. Screaming his name.“Castle! Castle—my baby, I fell—I didn’t mean—please, please, it hurts—”He was behind me in a breath, then he ran past me and dropped to his knees. “Adriana, oh my God—shit, don’t move, just stay there—”She reached for him. “My baby—Castle, please—"I just stood there. Frozen. Like someone had hit pause on me.And all I could think about was how every time I tried

Castle. He was already at the door when I caught up. His clothes balled up in his arms, face hard, back stiff. He was leaving. Just like that. And it hit me. If he walked out that door angry, confused, and hurting, he wouldn’t come back. And I couldn’t let that happen. Not without trying. Not without telling him the truth, or at least enough of it to make him stay long enough to listen. “Angel,” I called, my voice coming out in a hoarse whisper. He didn’t look back or answer. Maybe he didn't hear me or maybe he was already tired of my bullshit. I reached the door and blocked it without thinking. His hands tightened around his clothes, like he was fighting the urge to shove past me. “Just wait. Please,” I said. “Let me explain—” He dropped everything, just let it fall with a thud on the carpet. And the next second, I was against the door with his hand wrapped tightly around my throat. His eyes were wild with pain and betrayal, but it didn't compare to the heartbroken expressi

AngelI was already in the tub when it hit me again that this wasn’t just a house. It was a goddamn estate. You know, those kinds of places you see in old movies or music videos—like something a prince or a billionaire would live in. The bathtub was almost the size of a freaking pool. I had actually spent the first five minutes trying to figure out how the jets worked, and then another three just staring at the panel like it might bite me. I didn’t even know tubs came with panels. The damn thing had buttons for heat, bubbles, lighting… lighting, for God's sake.I pressed one and soft lights came on around the base like it was a spaceship. I laughed to myself and shook my head, because this was ridiculous but also… kind of amazing. I sank deeper into the water, letting the warmth eat away the hangover. My muscles thanked me and my brain was relaxed for the first time in hours.Still, I couldn’t relax all the way. Not really. There was something gnawing at me. A weird little itch und

Castle. Why the hell did I bring Angel to my house? Seriously. What was I thinking? Now he had gotten a front-row seat to the one thing I never wanted him to see. He had seen my house and he was smart. He was going to start asking a lot of questions, and I was not sure I have the answers that would make him stay.Thing was that I was just too tired to think clearly when I was driving him away from the bar in the wee hours of the morning. I didn’t have the energy to argue with myself or call some fancy hotel. I just drove us here. I figured I would deal with it later.Yeah, big mistake.I remembered what he told me when I was upstairs, “Your place looks like it belongs to one of those old mafia families.”He was obviously joking about it, but he wasn’t wrong. In fact, he was so close to the truth that one wrong move would implicate me. The kitchen was quiet when I walked in. It was two floors down from my wing, way in the back of the house. There was a soft clatter coming from the

Angel.I woke up to silence and that was the first sign that something was wrong. Normally there should be traffic in New York by this time of the morning, but here it was so silent. The first thing I registered was that I wasn’t home, obviously. The second thing was that my mouth tasted like a paper bag and stale liquor.I squinted against the unfamiliar softness beneath me. My bed back at home wasn't hard actually, but it wasn't this soft. This mattress felt like clouds, the sheets were cool and smelled faintly of cedarwood and something sweet. The pillows were darker than anything I owned, a deep slate gray, and the duvet hung heavy across my legs, too expensive to kick off casually. This was not my apartment. This wasn’t anyone’s apartment, for that matter. This was something else.I sat up slowly and winced, every movement scraping against my skull like sandpaper. Finally resting against the headboard, I looked around the room. It was enormous. The walls were charcoal grey wit
