Chapter 3

Author: Nourishing Soup
I wondered if Troy had hidden his posts because his Instagram was empty. Even his profile picture felt weirdly generic, like something from a brand-new burner account.

Logan wasn't messing with me, was he?

I was still second-guessing him when my phone lit up with a bunch of new messages.

"Hello, Zoey Collins. I'm Troy Levine. Logan said he wanted to introduce us so you could be my girlfriend.

"I've been thinking about dating someone lately, and I think we could give it a try.

"But I'm worried that I might not be your type. I'll send you some photos first, and you can decide if you want to be with me after you see them."

I bit my lip and slowly slid my finger up the screen, squinting as I opened the photo. A second later, my eyes flew wide.

A cute guy could make me blush and set my heart racing, but Troy's photo had me so dizzy I felt like I might get a nosebleed.

I kicked my legs against the mattress, too excited to keep still.

Right then, Logan texted me, "Troy isn't the easiest person to get along with. He barely replies to anyone and comes off pretty cold. Don't get discouraged. Try putting yourself out there a little."

Huh?

I scrolled through the new photos Troy had sent, all showing off his abs.

Cold? If he were a peacock, his tail would already be fanned out as far as it could go.

I held my phone, saving Troy's photos to my gallery one by one, completely forgetting to text him back.

Troy got impatient. "Am I not your type? Maybe I just picked bad angles. People always say I look better in person. How about we meet up? I can come meet you."

I raised my eyebrow.

Was he really this eager?

From everything I'd seen on the Internet, once people who dated online met in real life, things moved fast. Some even went that far on the first day. But I wasn't ready for that yet.

I spaced out for a second and accidentally tapped my hidden album. There was only one photo in it.

I let out a couple of awkward little coughs. Heat rushed to my face, and my mouth went dry.

I poured myself a glass of ice water to cool down and typed, "It's not like that. You're really handsome, but we don't have to rush to meet. We go to the same college anyway.

"I just got into your school, and in a few days, when the semester starts, we'll finally see each other."

After I sent the message, the chat stayed quiet for a moment. Then, my phone started to vibrate.

I cleared my throat before hitting the answer button.

I made my voice a little higher and said, "Hi."

A low, unhurried voice came through on the other end of the line, "Hey, this is Troy."

My heart jumped. I touched the warm edge of my ear and said softly, "I know."

"So, does this mean we are a thing now?"

"But you don't even know what I look like. What if I'm ugly? Would that bother you?"

"No," Troy said without hesitation.

My cheeks puffed out in annoyance.

Logan had said the same thing, and he still ended up badmouthing me behind my back.

When I stayed quiet, Troy finally spoke in an unhurried voice, "Zoey, I don't want to lie to you. I've actually seen you before."

He'd seen me before? Where?

There was no way someone as striking as Troy wouldn't have stayed in my memory.

My mind scrambled for answers as he continued, "The reason I was in such a hurry to make things official is because I know you went to Vayport recently. I figured you probably went to see Logan."

I felt even more thrown. "He doesn't even know I went to see him. How did you find out?"

Troy fell silent for a moment, then said in a low voice, "Because he's been looking for you everywhere online."

He sent me a link.

I frowned and opened it, finding a slightly blurry photo.

I was in the back of a cab with my forehead pressed to the cold window, neon colors spilling across my face. It looked quietly beautiful and a little lonely.

The caption on the post said, "Okay, I need everyone's help with this. Vayport, night of the 7th, Sizzlebone BBQ. I met this woman who knocked the wind out of me, and now I'm stupidly into her.

"I even ran after her cab and still couldn't catch up. Please, I'm begging you. If anyone can help me find her, I will do anything for you!"

When I reached the last line, I ended up laughing.

I glanced at the calendar. There was still a week left before school started, and I was honestly looking forward to it.

I was trapped in a cramped space. I tried several times to break free, but it didn't work.Logan was breathing hard, and the look in his eyes was so vicious it felt like he could tear someone apart.I forced myself to breathe and met his eyes. I kept my voice as steady as I could. "We can talk about it. Just let go first, okay?"Logan's lips twitched, but his grip only tightened. "You're moving in with Troy?"What the hell did any of that have to do with him? What right did he think he had to grill me like that?I frowned, but I knew this was the worst possible time to push him, so I pressed my lips together and stayed quiet. I honestly hadn't expected him to get even more wound up.Logan's eyes were bloodshot. "Why? Why did you choose him? I'm not worse than him!"He stared right at me, then suddenly pulled out a chain. My stomach dropped.A second later, he snapped the chain around his own neck and held the other end out to me. "I can be good. Please look at me, okay? I won'

Troy let out a low chuckle. "What do you mean?"I stepped out of his arms. "I'm the one who's trying to take advantage of you right now. But I don't really get to, not with how things are. Go find your dad before he starts to worry."Troy sighed, gave me a quick kiss, and then reluctantly walked away. That night, Troy got an earful from his dad for three straight hours. After that, he looked weirdly holy, like some kind of saint. When he came to see me, he even asked permission before he held my hand, let alone kissed me.My temper flared out of nowhere. "Troy, we can date, but if this is how it is, we should just break up now!"He panicked right away. "Break up? No way, I'm not breaking up. Never! Babe, I just think my dad had a point. In a relationship, the woman always risks getting hurt more."We're young and reckless, and if something happened, I'm scared you'd regret it…"He continued, "I might look easygoing, but if we ever went that far, I'd never just let you walk away

I hid a mischievous smile and forced my expression to smooth out. "You made that decision without even asking me. I wasn't happy about that."Troy's gaze dropped. "I'm sorry. I saw people flooding the confessions page with posts about you, and it really messed with my head. I said something I shouldn't have because I was upset. I won't do that again."Please don't stay mad at me."I looked at him and almost laughed.I cleared my throat. "It isn't that hard to cheer me up."Troy's eyes brightened. "What do you want me to do?"I lifted my brows and leaned close to his ear. "Hey, you really didn't edit that photo? I still don't believe a human body can actually look like that, so let me see the real thing."Troy froze, and once it registered, his face went bright red. "N-Now?"I nodded. "Yeah, right now."Troy's lashes fluttered. "Babe, you're so direct."I clicked my tongue. "Are you going to let me see it or not?"He pulled his phone from his pocket. "Yes, yes. I'll book a ho

Troy scoffed, his voice rising. "Logan Wright! What the hell are you even talking about? Zoey is my girlfriend, and you were the one who introduced us. Did you forget?""I didn't know she was…"Logan cut himself off, glared at Troy, and swore. He raked a hand through his hair."Troy, I treated you like a brother. What was I to you? You knew the one I'd been looking for this whole time was Zoey, and you kept your mouth shut!"If our friends hadn't caught the two of you sharing a room at the hotel, how damn long were you planning to keep it from me?"Logan kept getting more worked up as he talked. He pulled a pack of cigarettes from his pocket, but when he noticed me watching, he quietly shoved it back into his pocket."I'm not going to waste time. Give Zoey back to me, and I can pretend nothing happened."Troy and I spoke at the same time."Did you ask my girlfriend what she wants?""Did you ask what I want?"A little rush of satisfaction went through me. We couldn't help it.

Troy and I shared a look, then quickly stepped aside.I groaned inwardly. With the way things were right then, it felt like if we didn't at least do something, we'd have been misunderstood for nothing.I shook my head, pushed all the weird thoughts away, and let Troy pull me forward.Once we stepped into the room, he checked for hidden cameras. When he was sure it was safe, he took out the disposable sheets and covers.I stood off to the side, stealing glances at Troy's profile. His nose was so perfect that I wondered if he'd gotten work done. And his jawline made me wonder if he'd had a thread lift, because I couldn't see a single needle mark.I kept marveling to myself that someone in real life could actually look like this and that this guy was actually my boyfriend. Damn, I really was something!I was staring at Troy, completely absorbed, when he suddenly turned his head.Caught swooning over him, I suddenly felt uneasy. "W-What is it?"Troy stared straight at me, as if he

Troy wore a plain white T-shirt and jeans, holding a huge bouquet of peach garden roses. He stared at me as if he'd completely blanked out. He still looked dazed even after I walked up to him.My stomach dropped. What was with that reaction? Did he think I wasn't good enough for him?My mood sank straight through the floor. I let my expression go cold and looked away. I was about to pretend I didn't know Troy and walk off when he suddenly grabbed my wrist. His familiar voice came from right next to my ear, "These are… for you."I turned to look at him, but he looked away immediately."Give me the suitcase. I'll take it."Troy leaned down, his ears flushing bright red.Realization flickered across my face, and a small dimple formed in my cheek. So he actually was just shy.I reached out and took the flowers, mumbling, "You said you wanted to hug me, you wuss."Troy went still, then let go of the suitcase handle and snapped upright, lifting his arms with awkward stiffness. He
