Eva's POV
"Manhattan," Luke’s voice echoed in my mind, still laced with the confidence of his lies. Just five minutes ago, he’d told me he was in Manhattan on a business trip. I turned from the café counter in Palm Beach, coffee burning my tongue. He was seated by the window, holding hands with Lucy Radcliffe, the woman his parents demanded he marry and daughter of billionaire Brandon Radcliffe. It was a betrayal I could taste… bitter as the coffee I nearly choked on. The morning had already been cruel to me, but this? This was the final blow. I had lost the deal I came for in Palm Beach because my company was deemed too small and new to execute the deal. Now, I had to deal with this also... Luke’s betrayal. His eyes strayed to me, widening briefly before narrowing with guilt. The unspoken "oh damn" on his face only deepened the snag in my heart. I wouldn’t confront him. Confronting him was making light of his betrayal. I forced my feet to move, heading for the door. I heard him coming fast after me. “Wait, Eva,” he called with urgency. “Please wait, Eva.” He grabbed onto my hand, just by the door. He turned me gently to face him. “And why should I wait, Luke? You lied to me,” I snapped, my voice sharp. “I didn’t mean to lie,” he said, his voice low and insistent. “You know I’ve never lied to you before. My dad forced me into a date with Lucy this morning, and I couldn’t bring myself to tell you sooner.” His soft hazel eyes searched mine. Eyes that had always made me feel loved and appreciated. Now they made me seethe with rage. “I didn’t want this to happen.” He added. “Well, it happened,” I said, enunciating each word. “I thought you said you were never going to give in to your parents pressure. That you wouldn’t go on any date with Lucy or even marry her,” I said, remembering all the promises he made to me. Each memory of them was a stab at my heart as they crossed my mind. His gaze shifted downward with a bit of uncertainty. “The threats were getting too severe. I had to give in, Eva. My parents threatened to disown me if I did not marry Lucy," he said. I scoffed. The aftertaste of coffee turned sour in my mouth, matching the burn in my heart. He was lying again. That he couldn’t look me straight in the eye as he spoke was proof enough. “They had always made such threats to disown you all the while we have been together, and you never for once cowered to their threats. Why now?” I challenged his lies. “Let me guess: the choice was between your precious inheritance and our love. I bet you didn’t think twice before booting our love into the trash can” Luke reached for my hand, but I stepped away. “Don’t say that, Eva,” he pleaded, his voice gentle. “You know I wouldn’t sacrifice our love so cheaply. Their threats were getting severe. It even took me months to succumb,” he said, desperate to convince me. “Well, you finally did,” I replied coldly. “This is the end for us, Luke. Goodbye. Forever," I said. I spun on my heel for the streets, hurrying down the sidewalk. Behind me, I heard quick footsteps. Turning, I found myself face-to-face with Lucy Radcliffe. “I’m Lucy Radcliffe, Luke’s fiancée,” she said, extending her hand with an exaggerated smile. I ignored the gesture. “And you must be Eva Brooks, Luke’s ex.” She said, staring at the file case in my hands to pick my name. I didn’t bother correcting her assumption, though I’d only just become Luke’s ex a minute ago. Sliding closer to Luke, Lucy draped his arm around her waist and rested her hand on his chest. Luke just did nothing. He pretended he had no hand in the deliberate show to spite me. “So you are an event planner, Eva," she said and smiled. “Yes,” I answered flatly. I was unsure if her tone held genuine interest or veiled insult. Lucy’s eyes sparkled as she turned to Luke. “She’s an event planner, Luke. Isn’t that just perfect?” “Yes, it is,” he agreed, his voice dragged with reluctance. “Why don’t we have her plan our wedding? I am sure she would do a good job," Lucy cried, ecstatic. She looked to Luke for encouragement. Luke grimaced. “Lucy—” But she was already focused on me again. “Will you plan our wedding, Eva?” Lucy’s smile widened. “Six months from now, on my birthday.” Her gaze lingered, demanding an answer. I let my eyes travel from her to Luke, indecisively. The request was unexpected, and I suspected the motive behind it. Still, I was at a crossroads. A wedding like this could save my company. But I would have to stomach Lucy’s ridicule. Luke begged me with his eyes to refuse the offer, since our collective sanity was at stake. He should have thought about that when he chose to betray me. I raised my head proudly to Lucy. “Yes, Lucy. I’ll plan your wedding,” I said, determined.Eva's POVGavin jumped down from the car and hurried after me. “What did I do wrong, Eva?” he asked, pulling in front of me, blocking off my path with his big body. His handsome face was sewn tight with worry as he stared at me, the teasing spark in his blue eyes lost. His chin quivered as he asked again. “Did I do something to offend you, Eva?”I said nothing to him. He doesn't deserve my answers. I walked past him, continuing down the sidewalk to my office. But he was before me once again, filling up my path with his big body. “Okay, Eva. I am sorry for whatever I must have done wrong. I didn't know Isabella would do something as crazy as that.” He pleaded.“You still don't know what you did wrong, Gavin.” I whispered quietly to him, “I don't think you can ever know. You are too privileged to.” I sidestepped him again, continuing down the sidewalk once again. But this time, he grabbed my wrist, and he spun me around to him. “Get off me. Let me go, Gavin,” I yelled, struggling from
Eva's POVI climbed down the stairs of the apartment block three days after the incident with Gavin and Isabella. I held tighter to my purse and my car keys, knowing fully well it takes just a moment to lose them.In a block of over two hundred people, there were bound to be thieves. The block was crawling with them. Their specialty was snatch and run. One minute you are holding your valuable; the next, some unknown kid is running off with it at an insane speed. The sun was still prepping up in the sky for its morning dance. But the world looked bright enough to make good the promise of a fine day as I dropped down the external stairs onto the sidewalk, waiting to grab myself a cab. My car had broken down a day ago. Most people were usually surprised when their cars broke down, but not me. In fact, I was more surprised it hadn't happened sooner.I was hailing a cab when a Ferrari swept in front of me with a fancy swerve. The cab had to drive away to avoid a collision. The Ferrari park
Eva's POV“Yes, I am Gavin’s fiancée, and we have been dating for two years now,” I lied. I didn't know where the idea came from, but it sounded like a good backstory. A backstory that earned me a look of pure murder from Isabella. Her eyes blared with fire, sweeping the whole of me carefully, her lips curling with raw disgust as if I was a product of a nearby bin.I had hoped I wouldn't regret this when I said ‘Yes.’ But now, witnessing the passion with which Isabella stared me down, my heart thumping furiously with each step she took closer to me, I was beginning to have regrets. I knew now that I could as well kiss the Villa’Edste goodbye. The one thing I had been so desperate for, and one thing I had swallowed my pride, asking Gavin's help for.“You are lying, bitch. You are merely playing along with him.” She eyed me further, her eyes digging holes through me. “Gavin doesn't do poor, workaholic, and overdressed girls like you.”It felt refreshing to know I wasn't Gavin's spec. P
Eva’s POVTheir eyes burned through me as I remained somehow partly in their middle. I bowed away carefully, trying not to draw attention and make things between them any more awkward than they already were.Bri, Madam Isabella’s assistant didn't spare me even a glance as I moved to stand just beside her. I had thought her cologne was soothing and inspiring before. Now I thought it terrible. I had to crinkle my nostrils near her.Maybe I was being petty, but it didn't matter. She wasn't looking. Bri had her eyes trained on Gavin and Madam Isabella, especially Gavin. She watched the scene sullenly, her eyes twinkling with a bit of bitterness. She didn't seem to fancy losing her 6-foot-four Greek god, which she’d just begun to crush on, to her boss.Well—she was welcomed to the club of disappointment. Because how in the world could the most renowned playboy in the country coincidentally reunite with his ex-wife just when I had called him to help me seduce her assistant? It was just the
Eva's POVI had no idea why Madam Isabella’s name threw him off. His expression turned blank at the mention of the name. The flirtatious glint that always held his eyes was abandoned for a hardness that now had my heart nearly racing in the entrapment of my chest. The more I stared into them, the harder they burned. “I am sorry, Eva, I can't help you,” he said crisply and spun for his car.“Why?” I yelled after him, the word almost hanging in my throat. He didn't answer. Instead, his pace quickened, as if something was out to get him in the underground car park of the Luminee Palace. “Wait, Gavin. What is happening?"Still, I got nothing. His broad, powerful back retreating from my sight. He threw himself into his Porsche. With no other choice, I threw myself onto the front of the car, blocking his path with my body. I knew he could just simply reverse and drive off, but like this, I thought he would understand my desperation.I wasn't one to seek help from anyone. I was a one-m
GavinThe phone beeped in the middle of the presentation, cutting through the presenter’s monotonous voice.Every eye in the room snapped straight to me, picking me out as the suspect. There was only one person who could dare bring a phone to a presentation, and that was me. Anyone else, and they'll be kissing their jobs goodbye. It was my company. I set the rules and can break them.I took out the phone from my pocket, and it was Eva flashing on the screen. My lips curled slowly into a tentative smile. I reclined on my seat, staring at the screen. I wondered why she had chosen to call. Perhaps she's fallen for me already? The thought made my smile morph fast into a grin, a sly grin.I still couldn't pin down why she interests me so much. She was pretty—yeah, with her red hair and toffee brown orbs, and so were the hundreds of girls I have dated. Yet, I had never felt the urge to chase.Maybe—I tweaked my head slightly… I hadn't tried chasing any lady before now because they were alw
