Harper's POV

The second Ethan disappeared around the corner, it felt like the floo had ripped out from under me.

I stood frozen in the middle of the hallway, my ohon still gripped in my trembling hand, staring at the call screen until my vision blurred as every of his words echoed in my head.

My chest hurts so badly it felt like I had swallowed some brown glass.

He had declined my call. Just like that. After everything, after the kiss, after Madison, after the video, after blaming me for something I didn't even remember if I did. He had walked away like I was the problem.

Like I was the one who had ruined us.

A group of girls passed by, laughing too loudly, and one of them deliberately bumped my shoulder. “Careful,” she muttered to her friend, “Wouldn't want her trying to steal your boyfriend next.”

They laughed as they walked off.

Heat flooded my face and I wanted to disappear. I wanted the ground to open and swallow me whole.

I should have gone back to my dorm, locked myself in my room and cried until I had no tears left to shed, but I was here, in the cafeteria.

Doing what exactly? Maybe I still stupidly thought about Ethan.

“Wow,” a voice said behind me, dripping with fake sweetness. “She actually came out in public.” I didn't need to turn around to know who it was.

Sienna Blake. The beautiful flawless cheerleader that was always in Ashton space, kissing him, getting all touchy even during his games.

“I mean, if I threw myself at Ashton Reid and got caught on camera, I'd probably transfer.”

The girls around her laughed, but Sienna wasn’t done.

“I guess it makes sense, though,” she continued, her voice louder now, meant for an audience. “Ethan didn’t want her, so she went for the older brother. Kind of desperate, but creative.”

“Did you see what Ashton said? He told the guys he only did it bevause she looked like she was going to have a breakdown. A fucking pure charity! The nerd girl needed his hot buggy.”

I stopped in my tracks near the entrance of the dining hall, the words hitting at my face. I whipped around and for a moment, I thought I'd misheard the voice. “What?”

I had spent entire morning drowning in guilt over Ethan. I had leg him make me feel like I had betrayed him, like I had done something awful.

I had been sick with embarrassment, sick with confusion, sick with not knowing what had happened after I drank too much.

And Ashton Reid? He had the nerve to make it worse? To turn me into some pathetic joke for his teammates? To act like he'd done me a freaking favor?!

A charity?

I head to the center where the blue and white jerseys gathered like some royal court.

Ashton was there, sitting at the head of the table. He was still in his hockey jacket, dark hair messy in that careless way that probably took effort, and he was leaning back, a sports drink in one hand, looking every bit the king of Westbrook. When he saw me, he didn't look guilty or concerned. He looked bored, with a smirk playing on his lips that said he expected me.to. come crawling over to perhaps thank him for the ‘attention’’ I gained.

“Well,” he drawled, his gaze dragging over me slowly. “Look who…”

“Don’t.” My voice cut through his words, sharp and clear and the table went completely still, even sienna leaned forward slightly in disbelief.

“You don’t get to stand there,” I said, with a steady voice despite the storm raging inside me, “and act like you did me a favor.” I slammed my fist on the table in front of him as his smirk faltered.

“Excuse me?” he said, his tone cooling in disbelief.

“You heard me,” I shot back. “I don’t know what version of the story you’ve been telling your friends, but let’s get one thing straight….”

I took a step closer, my heart pounding but my voice unwavering.

“That night meant nothing.”

A ripple moved through the crowd gathering around us.

Ashton’s eyes narrowed slightly in disbelief. “Careful with what you say,” he warned softly and it only made me laugh.

“No,” I said, shaking my head. “You don’t get to warn me. Not after you went around telling people I threw myself at you like you’re some kind of prize.”

His jaw tightened.“Maybe if you didn’t….”

“I don’t even remember kissing you,” I cut in, my voice rising just enough to carry. “That’s how insignificant it was.”

And I knew it hit him so damn well that his shoulders stiffened just slightly.

“Trust me,” I continued, my words colder now, sharper and matching his energy, “if I had been in my right mind, it never would have happened.”

A few gasps came in as people started bringing out their phones. Because no one talked to Ashton Reid like that. No one rejected the captain’s word in front of his court.

And I wasn’t done.

“You’re a legend in your own mind, Ashton,” I continued, my voice cutting through the stunned silence. “But to me? You’re just a mistake I wouldn’t repeat.”

Another loud gasp erupted. “Keep your ‘charity’. I’d rather be invisible than be another notch on a jersey that’s going to be forgotten the second you graduate.”

Harper's POV"He's asking for you again," the nurse said, stopping me in the corridor on my way back the next morning.I had come alone. Ashton had dropped me at the entrance and said he'd wait in the car, I understood him, and I had walked in.I pushed open Ethan's door. He was sitting up, wrist elevated, hospital breakfast untouched, and he looked better than last night, it was honestly more improvement than I had seen people look better after such an accident or shock."You came back," he said."I said I would, how's the wrist?” I sat in the chair beside the bed."Annoyingly painful, coach is going to be furious.""Coach can wait," I said. "How are you actually?""Strange, like something got shaken loose and I can't put it back where it was." He looked at the window. "I've been lying here since six am thinking about things I've been avoiding thinking about.""Like the fact that you were the first person they called,"The door opened, then I saw him. Mr. Reid was in the room and the

Harper's POV"Which hospital?" Ashton said.He was already up, already finding my clothes, I was still sitting on the bed with the phone in my hand processing the words emergency contact and accident and stable condition."I need to call back, th..hey didn't say." I was tumbling over my words."Call in the car, we need to leave now,”We were out the door in under two minutes.I got the hospital name on the second call, a Collins RD hospital, and told Ashton and he redirected without a word and I sat with my hands in my lap and stared at the road and tried to locate the feeling in my chest accurately.I was scared, fear of losing someone I had spent two years caring about and couldn't switch that off regardless of everything that had changed between this morning and now."Hey, the caller said he is stable. You don't have to worry all the way there.”"I know.""You're still scared."He didn't say anything else, he just tried to drive faster.Madison was in the waiting room when we got t

HARPER'S POVAfter the date, I walked back to campus alone letting go of what was supposed to be.I met up with Ashton the next day. I hadn't told him about any of the meetups so far, I was thinking of different ways on how to start the conversation.“You seem a bit distant, is there anything I should know?”We were on the bench outside and he was right. I had been present enough to respond when required but the rest of me had been thinking about something else entirely.”"I had coffee with Ethan last week," I said.He looked at his cup. "Oh yeah, I kinda figured it out.""You knew? Why didn't you say anything?"He turned to look at me directly. "Someone told me, and because I didn't know what you'd say back."I stared at him. "What did you think I'd say?""That you still had feelings for him." He held my gaze. "And I wasn't ready to hear that.""And if I told you I didn't still have feelings for him."Ashton looked at me for a long second."I'd say it's about time."I let the words s

Ashton's POV"Oh, saw your brother with Harper at the restaurant place near the east gate by the way. It looked like a whole thing, flowers on the table and everything.”Bryce told me on a Friday morning like it was nothing. We were taping up before practice, the locker room loud with pre-session energy, we had played well all week and knew it.And Bryce was talking about something else entirely, a party, a girl, a story that I had been half following and then he mentioned Harper in the middle of everything else like it was just another detail in a list of things that had happened in his life.I finished the tape on my wrist. "When?" I said."Yesterday afternoon around three." Bryce kept talking, moving on to the next thing, completely unaware that he had dropped a bomb. “Anyway, back to what I was saying—"Practice was the best session I had put together all month.Coach pulled me aside after the first drill and said whatever I was doing I should keep doing it and I nodded and went

Harper's POV"You're early," I said.Ethan was already at the corner table when I walked in, which was new. He was always never on time, never before, and finding him already seated with two menus and a small bunch another flowers on the table told me he had been here long enough to have arranged all of it and sit with his hands folded waiting."I didn't want you to be the one waiting this time," he gestured for me to sit.I sat down across from him and looked at the flowers and then at his face and he looked like someone who had made a decision and was quietly committed to seeing it through."How are you?" he smiled.I looked at him. "You actually want to know?""I actually want to know.""I am tired, I have an essay that's due on Friday, how about you?”"Better than last week." He turned his cup on the table. "Madison and I talked.""How did it go?”"Honestly? It was hard. She said things I needed to hear and I said things I should have explained before we started all these and by t

Harper's POVI went back to my dorm after and I couldn't stop beaming."You have a visitor."Jade said it from the doorway and broke my flashbacks.I looked up from my laptop. "Who?""Tall, football shoulders, holding flowers for the second time this month." She leaned against the frame. "Your brother's keeper is downstairs.""Ethan is not my—""I know what he is," she said. "I'm just telling you he's there."I closed my laptop.."Did he say what he wanted?""He said he wanted to talk." She paused. "He looked nervous, which I will admit I found mildly interesting because I have never seen him look nervous around you.”I sat there for a second. "Tell him I'll be down in five minutes," I said.Jade disappeared, I stayed on my bed for the full five minutes doing nothing except staring at the wall and having a very brief and very direct internal conversation with myself about what I was and was not going to do in this interaction.I was not going to be the version of me that dissolved the
