The faint sound of a woman screaming filtered through the trees just as Felix and Ari were about to enter Arthur’s little cottage. Felix’s heart skipped a beat as recognition hit him. “That’s Kendra!”
“How do you know?” Ari asked with a scowl as she attempted to pull him through the door. “It’s probably a wild animal that sounds human when it screeches. Remember, their different here.”
“That was a human scream,” he protested.
“What’s the matter?” Olga asked as she walked into the living room with the baby in her arms to find Felix resisting Ari’s attempts to pull him inside.
“Kendra just screamed,” he said with urgency.
“What?” Olga barked with concern as she moved closer to them. “How do you know? Where is she?”
Ari glowered at Felix as she silently dared him to admit to his aunt that he’d play voyeur while Kendra and Rex were in the throes of passion. To her surprise, he did just that.
Olga closed her eyes while she listened to what her nephew had to say. She’d been aware of his attraction to Kendra for most of their lives, but she hadn’t thought it serious enough to impair his marriage like it was apparently threatening to do.
She heaved a sigh of regret. Perhaps she’d done wrong in not telling them the truth about their relationship to each other. Kendra was indeed her blood niece, but Felix and Rupert shared no blood with them. They were both children who’d been adopted by Olga’s siblings in their infancy. They were related by law, but not by blood. She’d withheld this truth from them for a variety of reasons; the main one being her desire to protect Kendra from Rupert. He’d showed aggression at an early age and she worried about having him and Kendra being isolated like they were. Rightfully so, since he’d tried to force himself upon her while thinking them blood relatives. She could only imagine what might have occurred had he known the truth.
Withholding the truth from Rupert was the right thing to do, but was it the same in Felix’s case? She moaned inwardly. At this point, it was water under the bridge. Felix was married to Ari and Kendra was married to Rex. There was no sense in confessing such a secret at this point and time. It was far too late.
She studied Ari during the last part of Felix’s explanation of why he was certain that it was Kendra’s screams that he’d heard. It was clear that the girl wanted no part of saving her husband’s cousin. Tension and animosity of this kind was never good; especially at a time when solidarity was of the utmost importance. Hopefully, Felix would move through this phase before his marriage to Ari was damaged beyond repair and the dynamics of the family unit would return to normal.
“Do you remember where you saw them?” Olga asked. When he nodded, she grabbed a bow and quiver that was fully stocked with arrows. “Ari is expecting and must be tired. I’ll go with you to check things out.”
“I’m fine,” Ari protested.
Olga’s eyes bore into the younger woman’s. “You don’t look fine. It’s best you lie down while we check things out. I wouldn’t want to risk anything happening to that child in your belly.”
Hearing his aunt’s words, Felix gasped and urged his wife to please cooperate and take a rest. Then, after assuring her that they’d be as quick as possible, he grabbed a bow and quiver for himself and headed off in the direction they’d last seen Kendra and Rex.
Even at her advanced age, Olga was in fine physical condition. Keeping up with her under normal circumstances took strength and stamina. Felix’s club foot didn’t help matters any.
“Do you think they ran into a beast that they couldn’t handle?” he managed to say as he struggled to keep the pace.
Her thoughts had been bouncing from worry about what could have happened to her niece to concern about her nephew’s young and faltering marriage and his feelings for the wrong woman so it took her a moment to realize that Felix was struggling to keep up with her. Feeling guilty about forgetting his handicap, she quickly slowed her pace.
“They’re both such adept hunters,” she mused. “I can see if it was just one being caught unawares by a beast, but, with the two of them together, it makes no sense.”
Felix’s brow knit together. “How close did Arthur say we were from Center Land? Do you think they were taken by those people?”
Olga pursed her lips together. “You don’t trust them either, I see.”
“I can’t say why,” he said. “I mean… Ari’s a huge supporter of them and she was raised there. It’s just that… well… something feels off about that place.”
“Like the fact that they take children who can’t cut the mustard off to a place that Ari has no idea where? Or the fact that the girl never once stepped beyond their walls?” she asked.
“It’s that and then something else,” he said with a shrug. “Call it a gut feeling.”
“I pray to the gods that your gut is wrong, son, but I don’t think it is,” Olga said as she grabbed a bolder to help pull herself up the path faster. “We’re supposed to go after Eugene tomorrow. I hope whatever’s happening doesn’t prevent that. I worry about him being there for so long.”
“If he’s even there,” Felix blurted as he strained to pull himself up after his aunt with the same boulder. “There is a path we could have followed, you know.”
Olga shrugged. “This is a more direct route.” Then, as she continued onward, she said over her shoulder, “What do you mean if he’s still there?”
“I don’t know,” he replied. “It just came out.”
They walked in silence for the rest of the way until they reached the small clearing where he’d spied on Kendra and Rex. Rex’s clothes lay where he’d tossed them during their love making, but there was no sign of either him or Kendra.
Although he wasn’t as adept a hunter as Kendra, Felix possessed a few skills of decent measure. One of them being tracking. After inspecting the ground around the clothes, he sucked in air. “It looks like there were at least a dozen people here. Five were carrying a load. From what I can tell, four kept an even pace, so I’m thinking they were all carrying the same load and then one was on his own.”
“They were kidnapped?” Olga gasped as she gathered Rex’s clothes and hugged them close to her chest. “We need to get to Arthur and see what he thinks. If it’s Center Land, I’m not waiting until tomorrow to start out.”
She would have liked nothing more than to be able to remove her head from her shoulders and shove it somewhere far away so that she’d no longer have to suffer from the piercing pain that permeated from the blow she’d received. Kendra had come around an easy fifteen minutes earlier, but, since she wasn’t alone and wanted time to study her situation, she’d feigned still being knocked out.“How hard did you hit her?” a woman demanded in a worried tone.“I didn’t think it was that hard,” replied another in a defensive tone. “She fooled me. I thought she’d be made of sturdier stock than she is. She’s the first surface person I’ve encountered.”“She should have come around by now. Minerva won’t be happy about this,” complained the first woman.“I don’t know why you’re angry with Jeena, Petra,” said a third w
Kendra’s mind whirled as she followed Jeena to the food tent. She’d managed to convince Minerva to stay and answer more questions. She discovered that the Amazon women were on a bi-annual surveillance trip about their territory and that they had a home with real buildings that they lived in. These trips were to get an idea of what was happening in the area around them. They rarely interacted with the people that they watched. They simply made note of what they were about so that they could keep on top of things should someone be planning a move that they would consider harmful to their own kind. It also gave them an idea of how well the wildlife was faring. They took a special interest in the well-being of the creatures who co-habited with them and dealt severely with those who were cruel or inhumane to them. She’d learned that, not only had they observed her and Rex making love, but they’d seen a blonde male and petite bl
Olga paced about the living room while she waited for Arthur to complete his arrangements for their travel. He not only needed to arrange for sufficient horses, but there was the baby to find competent care for. He’d never encountered someone from Center Land, so he had his doubts about them being the ones to kidnap Kendra and Rex. He told her and Felix of a small group of rogue Amazon women who occasionally roamed the area. Although he couldn’t be sure, he was more apt to believe it was them who took her niece and nephew.“What would Amazon women want with them?” Olga mused aloud. “I thought they were warriors fighting on the side of right.”“They are,” Arthur said. “Unfortunately, there are bad apples in every bunch. This group was cast out a few years back and have been wandering about like nomads ever since. I’ve heard rumors that they occasional
His mouth was so dry that it felt like he’d swallowed a cup full of sand. He needed water, but there was no one in sight to ask for it. He questioned if they’d give it to him anyway. Since he’d been captured, the treatment that Rex had received was harsher than anything he’d experienced. The flesh on the goose egg that the blow to his head had caused was broken, yet he’d been given no medical care for it. He was so worried about infection that he’d used most of the water that his captors had provided to wash it out; leaving very little to quench his thirst with. His head finally felt clearer. For quite a while, his world was nothing more than a dizzy blur. Now, at least, he was able to decipher that he was being transported east toward a community of aliens to be sold or traded for staples that the Amazon camp was in need of.He’d tried to telepathically reach first Arthur and then Olga, but
It was almost dawn before Rex stopped to rest. It was then that he put on the sandals. They were a bit snug, but, with the leather ties secured loosely, they stayed on his feet and didn’t pinch. It took him a few minutes to get accustomed to the feel of the edge of the sandal against the beds of his big toes, but he soon moved as if he had custom shoes on his feet.He allowed himself a full five minutes of rest along a fast flowing stream before he forced his body back into motion. By now, the camp was aware of his escape and they’d be coming after him. He needed to get back to the village and get both help and protection. Being half naked with undersized sandals on his feet made for poor armor should they come upon him with arrows. The sun had just come over the ridge when he heard the sound of horses whinnying in the distance. It was coming from a direction that seemed unlikely for the Amazon women, but he couldn&
Marta waited outside Minerva’s tent for Kendra. They were breaking camp the following morning so this was her only opportunity to get her away from camp unnoticed. The alien village was but a day away. They’d be there the following night and then the girl would be sold and the money would be in Minerva’s possession. She’d already conversed with Minerva and learned that the rogue queen was rapidly reaching her fill of the surface human in the bedroom. It didn’t surprise her. Minerva was a woman of exotic likes and dislikes. From what Marta knew of what went on inside that tent, the foolish girl had allowed Minerva every liberty. Of course, she was drugged the night before and Marta had no doubt that she’d been drugged again; especially since Marta had told her that it was a special Amazon drink that would help elongate her life. She imagined Kendra willingly drank it when it was offered.&
The sun had been up for a few hours when she heard the sound of battle nearby. Uncertain what to do, Kendra pulled an arrow from her quiver and carefully crept in the direction of the commotion. The sight of an Amazon woman holding a knife to Ari’s neck was the final stone in her tower of craziness. Without thinking about the fact that she was still quite far away, she secured an arrow in her bow and aimed at the woman’s torso. Without a moment’s hesitation, she let out a war hoop to attract the woman’s attention and then let the arrow fly. With the ease of a skilled and competent hunter, she made a clean shot to the heart.Ari groaned as her opponent’s bulk fell, full-force, upon her petite physique. “Are you trying to kill me? Someone get her off of me! The arrow’s digging into my chest, damn it!”With his leg not cooperating, Felix fell to the ground several times while
They tussled with the idea of Ari and Felix returning to the village. Felix was concerned about the welfare of the baby after his wife having gone through the trauma of having a knife held to her throat and then being pinned beneath extreme dead weight that covered her body completely. Ari held firm to her insistence that she was fine and so was the baby. She wasn’t about to go back to the village when the others were going to Center Land. The academy at Center Land was, after all, her alma mater. Of everyone in the group, she belonged going there the most.Kendra did her best to emphasize that they had no plans of staying. It was their intention to slip in, fetch Eugene, and slip out again. The laughter that Ari emitted upon this statement sounded resentful and almost evil as she informed Kendra that no one simply slipped into Center Land. She reminded her that the academy’s focus was to produce soldiers for t
