~Houston~“So, let me get this straight.” I’m sitting behind my desk with Tyrice sitting in front of me and Jakob pacing the room. I’ve only been up for around an hour or two. We got in right as the sun was peeking over the hills. It wasn’t quite bright outside, but it was getting there. We all went straight to bed, and I haven’t seen Alayasia or Zara yet today. “You two went to the gathering and came back super early. Not just that, but you come back with a human and her daughter. Is that about right?” I run a hand over my face, not interested in this conversation. “Yeah, that’s the short version.” Jakob continues to place, and it’s actually starting to irritate me. “How long until the Mystic Wolves wage war?” I throw my head back, feeling the start of a headache. “What makes you think they will wage war?” Jakob stops pacing, and I watch him turn to Tyrice. The look on his face is one of shock. He looks completely dumbfounded at his words. “She was the Beta female, correct? She w
I look down at the phone to check the time. We only have a few minutes until we are supposed to leave. Getting out of the packhouse was fairly easy. I expected Maxim to be there to watch me leave, but he wasn’t around. Tyrice is putting our bags in the car, and I’m waiting to see if we are going to have guests or not. I’ve started to pace back and forth, the anxiety getting to me. Colby has been front and center, taking in our environment. He’s on the lookout for any sounds or anything that will alert us that we aren’t alone.A twig snaps in the distance, making me focus on the trees in front of me. I use my heightened sight, but I can’t see anything. “Well?” I jump, my heart beating a mile a minute. Tyrice steps up beside me and starts laughing. I extend my hand, popping him in his stomach. “Calm down, Killa. It’s just me.” Tyrice continues to chuckle as I turn my attention back to the trees. I check the time again and see we are almost at that time. If they don’t show soon, we’ll
~Alayasia~I fed Zara and was able to get her to lie back down. Her words kept ringing in my ears, making me even more confused than I already was. This isn’t an easy decision to make, and it’s driving me crazy. You know what needs to be done. I don’t know why you’re stalling. We HAVE to get out of here. I know, Clover, but there’s so much against us. This could blow up in our face. Clover growls in my mind, letting her frustration cover my body. I know why she’s fed up, and I don’t disagree. This should be a simple choice, yet here I am having trouble pulling the trigger. I know why I’m having trouble, but it makes no sense. This should be easy, and I’m just making it hard. A knock on the door pulls me out of my thoughts. My stomach immediately knots up, and my body starts to feel hot. I know it isn’t Maxim because he would never knock. Even if he forgot his key, we have a keypad on the door, so he’d always be able to get in. There were many times he’d drunk too much and had to key
~Alayasia~Well? What are we going to do? Clover poses a legitimate question that I’ve been wrestling with for a while now. I received a text from Houston. He told me that they would be leaving this pack during the night, and they would be willing to take us with them. It could become an issue down the road, but he assured me that they are okay with that. Prior to that text, I got a text from Maxim telling me not to wait up. The only thing I took from that is that I’m not meant to pleasure that Alpha today. I’m sure you’re wondering what the issue is. I’m being given an out and I’d be stupid not to take it, right? Well, what about later?Let’s be honest, I’m seen as a human. It was done on purpose, but it’s still a fact. This pack treats me horribly or completely ignores me because they see me as a human. What's going to make things different in a different pack? I have no money and have never had a job. Yes, I’m the Beta female, and it comes with pay, but I was never given that pa
~Houston~We don’t speak until we are secured in my room. Even then, we make sure that there’s no one lingering in dark corners and there are no red lights indicating cameras. Say what you will, but I don’t trust this pack at all. I’m sure they’d just as soon spy on us rather than actually treat us like guests. Well?Well what?Come on, Tyrice. You heard her. I told you to come out so you could listen to her for yourself. Yeah, I heard her and I didn’t say anything against her.You aren’t saying anything at all, though. When you're silent, that's when you’re thinking. So, what are you thinking? The mindlink goes quiet for a while, and I squirm on the bed, waiting for his response. I’m on the bed, and Tyrice is sitting on the little sofa that’s in the corner of the room. I know we need to discuss that little skirmish, but right now, I’m more interested in the Beta female. What’s with you, Killa? I mean, you are all for helping when it’s needed, but something about this is different f
Houston stops moving, and I’m sure that he can’t believe what I’m saying right now. I probably should have kept my mouth shut. I’m practically committing treason against my pack. I’m making accusations that I don’t have evidence for. I look up and see that we aren’t too far from the playground. There are kids playing, so it wouldn’t be the best place for Zara. I’m not the only one mistreated in this pack. I would never knowingly put Zara in a situation that could be dangerous. I look around and find a log not too far from where we are. I take Zara’s hand and move her over to the log. I walk back over to Houston and sit back down with him, making sure that I’m facing the log. I have to keep my eyes on Zara. I gently touch his knee, hoping that I didn’t completely break him with the news. “Are you okay? I… I’m sorry for what I said. You can forget I said anything at all.” I turn my head, still trying to figure out where to go. I don’t want to go home, and I can’t go to the packhouse.
