Roman’s POV
As I stood in front of the full length mirror in my bedroom, I found myself unwillingly indulged in the thought of her again.
Sienna.
The hurt in her eyes. The emotions in her voice. It just wouldn’t leave my mind and it made absolutely no sense. She looked exactly like Sabrina, down to the shape of her eyes and the curve of her lips, except that she had chestnut brown hair and sapphire colored eyes while Sabrina had charcoal black hair and blue eyes.
But then again, there was something about Sienna that felt different no matter how I tried not to think about it. Familiar, even.
I ran a hand through my hair, irritated at myself.
“Why the hell is she so convinced I’m her husband?” I muttered to myself. It didn’t add up. I had never seen her before in my life. Maybe Sienna was right and she was unstable.
But then, why couldn’t I stop thinking about her? Was it the feeling of guilt I felt towards her in her miserable state? Was that the reason I had this nagging pull in my chest that wouldn’t let me write her off entirely?
It wasn’t just her claim. Part of it was the way she looked at me. Like she knew me. Like she had been waiting for me to see her, to recognize her.
I tossed my shirt onto the bed and rubbed my face, exhaling sharply. I didn’t have time for this. I didn’t even know why I cared. I needed to rest after a long afternoon at the company.
Just then, the bedroom door opened, and I glanced up in the mirror to see Sabrina walking in. She was wearing one of her silk robes, her black silky hair loose and damp from her shower.
“Hey, baby.” She said to me with a softness of sweetness as she bit her lip and walked up behind me. Then, she wrapped her arms around my waist and pressed her body against my back.
I stiffened, feeling no arousal at her action. Frankly, I didn’t want any of this.
Her lips grazed my neck gently, planting soft kisses along the nape of my neck and over my back. As she kissed me, her hand slowly slid over my chest too.
“Sabrina, not now.” I sighed, stepping out of her grasp and moving toward the dresser.
At first, I was greeted by her silence. But I knew her enough to know that she was planning to throw a tantrum.
“Not now?” As expected, she blurted behind me in a sharp tone. “It’s never ‘now’ with you, Roman. What’s the matter this time?”
I pulled open a drawer, grabbing a fresh shirt. “I’m just not in the mood.”
“Not in the mood?” She echoed bitterly. “That’s your excuse every time. What’s the point of this marriage if we’re just roommates pretending to be a couple in public? You barely even touch me, Roman. The only few times you made love to me, I practically forced you to!”
I turned to face her, leaning against the dresser.
“How about you go get some good fuck from your side dick and stop pestering me into doing something I don’t want to?”
Her face paled visibly and she froze to her spot.
Caught.
A second later, she masked her shock behind teary eyes. Fake tears.
To be honest, I wasn’t mad when I found out that she was cheating on me after I had gotten suspicious and hired a private investigator to follow her around, only for him to send back photos of her kissing another man whose face was out of the frame and entering a hotel room with him. The fact that I wasn’t mad surprised me a little. I was supposed to be jealous and enraged that my wife was cheating on me with another man, but I wasn’t. Matter of fact, I couldn’t care less.
“How could you say something like that, Roman? What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Don’t play dumb, Sabrina.” I said, pulling my shirt over my head. “You can shed the crocodile's tears for someone else. I’m not buying it.”
“This is so unfair. You treat me like I’m not worth anything and now, you’re accusing me of infidelity? Do you feel satisfied when you make me unhappy?” She sobbed softly now and her lips quivered, but I wasn’t moved. I had caught on to her games a long time ago. She wasn’t crying out of guilt. She was crying because she had been caught.
“Well, if you’re so unhappy, why don’t you just go be with him? God knows I’m not stopping you.” I grabbed my watch from the nightstand, and strapped it on. “I’m taking Riley to the park. Don’t wait up.”
“Roman…”
But I walked out of the room before she could even finish.
**********
“Daddy, hurry!” Riley called, turning to look at me as she ran ahead in the quiet playground pack, with her curls bouncing as she clutched her stuffed bunny in one hand.
“I’m coming,” I chuckled as I walked after her. I needed the fresh air, away from the house and from Sabrina. Riley was the only part of my life that felt real ever since my near death experience six years ago. Sabrina and I had adopted her a year after my accident, after Sabrina had claimed adoption was the best option as she didn’t want to ruin her body by getting pregnant. I had agreed to the adoption because I didn’t want us to argue and now, I was glad I took that decision.
Riley was like my perfect ray of sunshine.
She stopped suddenly, pointing excitedly toward the swings. “Look, Daddy! It’s Livvy, my new friend at school!”
I followed her gaze to see a little girl with dark hair running toward us, her face lighting up upon seeing Riley.
“Livvy!” Riley shouted happily, dropping her bunny and running to meet her.
I smiled as I watched the two of them hug, giggling and chattering like the best of friends.
Then, I glanced up and my breath caught immediately at the familiar frame of a young woman standing near the swings, watching the girls with a small, soft smile. She looked different today. More relaxed, less guarded. But the moment our eyes met, her expression changed.
Sienna.
For a moment, I saw something like surprise cross her eyes, then confusion, then pain. Her lips seemed to part as if she wanted to say something, but instead, she bit her lip and turned her attention back to the girls.
“Livvy, we need to go.” She called out to the little girl gently as she walked toward them.
“But, Mommy, Riley’s here!” Livvy protested, pouting.
I frowned. Mummy? The little girl was Sienna’s daughter?
Sienna crouched down, brushing a strand of hair from Livvy’s face.
“I know, sweetheart, but we have to go. Say goodbye to Riley, okay?”
Livvy turned to Riley, her pout fading into a shy smile. “Bye, Riley.”
“Bye, Livvy!” Riley said, waving enthusiastically.
I watched as Sienna stood, taking Livvy’s hand. She glanced at me one last time. For a moment, I thought I saw her eyes glisten with tears. The feeling of guilt I had been battling with clawed at my heart again and I felt this heavy weight of sadness eat away at me.
What was going on with me? Why was I feeling this guilt and remorse towards someone I barely even knew?
As she turned to walk away, I surprised myself by doing the unthinkable. My hand shot out and grabbed her wrist.
My heart missed a skip and then started to beat faster as I felt her skin under my touch. Her skin was soft, warm beneath my palm, and the contact sent a jolt through me. An oddly familiar feeling that I had not felt in years until now.
Sienna turned back swiftly. Her eyes, now wide and tear-filled, locked with mine.
“Roman…”
I opened my mouth to say something, anything,
but nothing came out. My mind was spinning and my whole body felt warm at once. It felt as though I was meant to be here with her. As if I belonged to her.
I didn’t even know this woman, yet touching her felt like the most natural thing in the world. More natural than any touch I had ever shared with Sabrina.
And that scared me.
“I…” I let go of her wrist abruptly, taking a step back. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to…”
Sienna blinked at me, her lips parting as if she wanted to say something, but she didn’t. Instead, she nodded slowly and hesitated for a moment before turning and walked away, holding Livvy’s hand tightly.
As I watched her go, my chest tightened with emotions I couldn’t even name. Desire. Sadness. A yearning so deep it felt like it came from some part of me I didn’t even know existed. The pull I felt towards her during our brief moment of body contact was deniable.
And I wanted her. God help me, I wanted her.
I wanted to hold her again, to pull her towards me in an embrace. To kiss her. I wanted to throw all caution to the wind and make her mine.
And the thought of it scared me. Because I knew that was exactly what I was going to do.
SIENNAA sharp pain shot through my head as I slowly opened my eyes. I winced, the pounding in my skull making everything feel blurry at first. It took a moment for my vision to clear.Once I could see properly, I realized I was in what looked like an old, empty warehouse. My brows pulled into a frown as I looked around, confused and still aching. Nothing made sense. Where was I? Why was I here?I tried to move, but my body wouldn’t budge. Panic started to rise in my chest. I looked down, and my heart suddenly stopped momentarily.I was tied to a chair. My breathing quickened as fear wrapped tightly around me. I looked down at the ropes binding my wrists and legs, and a wave of helplessness hit me hard. Just as I started to lose control, flashes of what happened before rushed back to me.Gregory and Rafael. They had caught us… me and Sabrina. They knocked us out with those handkerchiefs soaked with chemicals.Panic turned to dread as I remembered Sabrina. My eyes darted around the ro
CANDICE“You worry too much, Ethan,” I said into the phone as I stepped out of my apartment and locked the door. “I already told you, I’m fine. I just took a few days off because I wasn’t feeling well. I’m going back to work today. How’s Atlanta treating you?”While Ethan went on about how he was doing fine but missed New York, even though he had only been gone two days for a business meeting, my eyes dropped to the floor near my door.A mess of flowers, apology cards, and gift boxes were arranged neatly in a pile on the floor. I didn’t need to guess that they were from Julian. My jaw tightened as fresh anger rushed through me.“I’ll call you back when I get to the office.” I said quickly, cutting Ethan off and hanging up before he could respond.Once the call ended, I kicked the gifts out of the way, stomping on some of them. My heel crushed a bouquet of white roses. A ribbon tore under my foot, and I muttered curses under my breath.“Cheating bastard.”Did he really think I would b
ROMANTHAT SAME DAY“The report was manipulated. Her husband didn’t die. He disappeared the same day her daughter was born.”The alcohol burned down my throat as I swallowed another shot. My mind was far away, stuck on Cross’s words from two days ago.“I think someone is sabotaging the truth and pulling strings behind the scenes, sir.”I poured another shot and drank it, trying to shut out the noise in my head. But the words kept coming back, over and over again. I couldn't shake them off.I was sitting on the small side table near the wine bar in the living room, using the drinks to distract myself. But it wasn’t working. No matter how much I drank, I still couldn’t stop thinking about it.There had been a mistake in Cross’s first investigation. When he told me, I was angry. I had trusted him to get it right. But later, I realized something didn’t add up. Something felt off. Cross was right. Someone was messing with the truth. Hiding things and pulling strings from the shadows. But
SIENNA“Greg… Gregory?”I watched Sabrina as she stared at the man in shock. Her eyes were wide and unfocused, and her mouth hung open like she had just seen a ghost. Her face had lost all color.“You know him?” I asked, even though it was obvious. She had called his name, so she most definitely knew him.It made me wonder whether he was one of her old henchmen? Maybe someone who had once done her dirty work and now turned against her?“Hold on, you two. The party wouldn’t be complete without me,” the second man said, pulling off his mask too. A sly grin appeared on his face.Sabrina’s eyes grew even wider, and her legs gave out. She stumbled back in shock.I looked at the second man closely. There was something familiar about him, but I couldn’t quite place where I had seen him before.“Wh…what…Rafael…” Sabrina stuttered, unable to finish her words. Both men laughed quietly, clearly enjoying the moment.“Oh, Mrs. Montgomery,” the second man—Rafael said with a mocking smile. “I never
SIENNAI looked around nervously as Sabrina’s car drove deeper into the quiet, run-down area. The place was filled with half built buildings, old abandoned houses, and a few empty warehouses. My whole body felt tense, and I couldn’t stop checking our surroundings through the window.Today was the deadline that the anonymous man had set for us to bring the money in exchange for our secret to be sealed away. He had sent the address, and now we were here, trying to find the right warehouse.“Number seven… number seven…” Sabrina muttered under her breath as she drove slowly, her eyes scanning the buildings.“There.” I pointed to a warehouse on the far right, squeezed between two others. The number seven was painted in faded white above it.As we got closer, my heart started beating faster. My mouth felt dry. The more we approached, the more I just wanted this to be over.Sabrina parked a little way from the warehouse. She looked around carefully, making sure no one else was nearby. If she
SIENNATHE NEXT DAYI rang the doorbell to Candice’s apartment and stepped back, waiting. She hadn’t shown up at work today, and I wasn’t surprised. Not after what happened yesterday with Julian and Sabrina. That was why I came straight here after work, to check on her. I knew she wouldn’t be doing okay after all the messy events of yesterday.Honestly, who would be?I waited a bit, then rang the bell again. And again. I was about to press it a fourth time when the door finally opened slowly from the inside.Candice’s blank face came up in front of me. She wasn’t crying, but the dark circles under her eyes said enough. Her hair was messy, like she hadn’t moved from bed all day. Like she had been crying on and off, sleeping in between.Seeing her like this made my chest tighten with anger. How could Julian and Sabrina hurt her like this? Especially Julian. I hoped to confront him when I got back to the mansion from here.“Hey.” She said softly. Her voice was low and dry, as if she hadn
ROMAN“Thank you so much for coming, Mr. Montgomery. It was a pleasure having you here.” One of the summit organizers said, shaking my hand. Another followed, doing the same. After a long and exhausting day, the business summit had finally ended, and I couldn’t wait to leave the building and head home to rest.Soon, we were finally left alone and it was just me and Harper. We walked side by side toward the elevator.“I really hope my mom made one of her usual home cooked dinners,” Harper said with a sigh as we entered the elevator and waited. He rubbed his stomach. “I’m starving.”I glanced at him and shook my head. “You really have no shame. Still a mama’s boy at your big age.”“Proudly,” he replied with a grin, then asked, “Have you heard from Miss Blake? I’ve been trying to reach her, but she’s been busy.”The mention of Sienna made my chest tighten. My heart started to race like it always did when I thought about her. She had been too busy with Ethan Crawford lately to even noti
CANDICEI stood frozen, my heart pounding so fast I could hear it in my ears. It felt like my whole world had just flipped upside down. I couldn’t take my eyes off what I was seeing. Sabrina on top of Julian, both of them lost in their moment, completely unaware that Sienna and I had walked in.I blinked slowly, trying to make sense of it. A part of me had always felt something was off with Julian. I even thought he might be seeing someone else. But never in a million years did I imagine it would be Sabrina.Julian was the first to notice us. His eyes widened in shock when he saw me standing there with Sienna behind me. In an instant, he pushed Sabrina off him, and she fell to the side of the bed. A sharp gasp escaped her lips as she finally noticed us too and she quickly grabbed the blanket and pulled it over herself.“Candice… shit,” Julian muttered, breathing hard as he scrambled to put on his pants under the blanket. Behind me, Sienna gently reached for my hand.“Let’s go, Candi
SIENNA“What the hell…” Candice whispered behind me.I quickly stepped away from her, my eyes wide with tears and my heart pounding so hard I could feel it in my ears. I tried to hide the contents of the package behind my back, even though it was pointless. She had already seen everything.Gone was the happy, smiling Candice from earlier. Now, her face was frozen in shock and confusion.Without saying a word, she stepped closer and took the photos right from my hand before I could stop her.I stood there helpless, frozen, as her eyes scanned through each picture with growing panic. My legs gave way, and I slid down to the floor, crouching against the wall as my whole body started to shake.“What is this, Sienna?” Candice asked in a soft, shaky voice. “What are you hiding from me? What are these pictures?”I opened my mouth to answer, but nothing came out. Just sobs. My chest tightened, and I broke down, crying.I shut my eyes, begging in my heart that this was just a nightmare. That
