I remembered how good Vaelor had been to me. How possessive he has been of me. Watching me while I sleep, cooking my favorite meals. How his touch feels against my skin, how he'd pull me to a corner in family gatherings, planting hot kisses on my lips.

“I can't wait until we get home, Kimberly.” He’d whisper in my ear before dragging me into the bathroom, his lips claiming mine against the wall

But all those sweet dovey moments were gone.

“Kimberly,” I heard Vaelor call my name from behind. I froze, the fear causing the paper to scatter on the floor.

The door jerked open, and Vaelor walked in.

I quickly picked up the scattered documents on the floor.

“Kimberly.” Vaelor stepped in, his presence occupying the space.

For a second, I couldn't talk. I stayed frozen, staring at him, my hands shaking behind me.

“We need to talk.” He broke the silence before us, and I finally shook out of my dead posture.

Vaelor moved closer to me; the scent of Clara's perfume covered him. Slowly, he guided me back until I was sitting on the bed. He sat next to me, and I gently placed the divorce papers beside me on the other side.

“You must have been surprised when you saw the wedding announcement—” he began, but I said nothing.

I had already detached myself from this marriage, so it didn’t hurt the way it did the first day Clara moved in.

“Clara is dying. The doctor said she has a little time to live, and her last request was for me to marry her. She wanted to die as a married woman.”

He wants to please his childhood sweetheart, even if I have to suffer for it.

“Okay,” I said flatly.

“Okay?” His brow furrowed.

What did he expect? For me to fight? I'm done fighting. This marriage was over long before now.

I nodded my head, standing up from the bed. I opened my drawer and dropped the divorce papers inside it.

He walked closer to me, standing behind me. “Kimberly, just give me—”

The sound of crashing was heard from downstairs.

“Vaelor,” Clara's trembling voice floated down the staircase.

I felt Vaelor's body tense. Clara had called, and duty answered immediately.

In a second, he was out of the room before I could speak.

“Are you okay?” I heard his faint voice from downstairs.

“Yes, I mistakenly broke the cup. My sickness must be acting up.”

“You should rest often, Clara.” My husband's voice was caring, and I think I haven't heard him speak to me in such a manner in a year.

“The doctor said I shouldn't be left alone.”

I went to the door and slammed it. Concealing their voices.

When Clara returned to the pack, she moved into our house five months ago. She claimed her house was broken into, so she couldn't sleep alone and had to move in temporarily.

Vaelor has approved it before I protest.

“The Dalton has been a good business partner, and Clara is sick.” He had said with finality.

And since then, she has flaunted herself in our home as if she owned it. Lunging at the pool in designer bikinis. Making small private talks with Vaelor like they're lovers.

Some nights I'd catch them so close, signing legal documents. The first thing she did was to strike a business deal with Vaelor's company the moment she came to the pack.

Vaelor didn't come back until midnight. I spent the night searching the internet for the best university to transfer to in Lincolnton in the human world when Vaelor walked in.

The choking scent of Clare's perfume announced his presence, and I quickly changed the search bar on my computer.

“You're still awake. What are you doing?”

“I'm done, just an assignment,” I said, closing the computer.

I stood up, heading to the bed, but he blocked my path.

“I've missed you.” His finger brushed my shoulder as he swept my hair to the side, making the skin of my collar visible.

I closed my eyes, leaning into his touch like a starving woman finally given a crumb.

I know I should pull away, but a starving part of me that only Vaelor could temporarily fill, even if he never stayed, wanted this.

His lips found my neck, and he unbuttoned the front of my nightgown. I closed my eyes, shutting off my sense of reasoning.

Just this once, I will let myself forget—

A knock came on the door, and Vaelor paused.

“Who's there?”

“It's me, Vae,” Clara called from outside.

She even has a pet name for your husband. A voice said in my head.

In a second, Vaelor was standing by the door, and he swung it open.

“Vae…” Clara’s weak voice trembled from the doorway. “My stomach… it hurts so much.”

She bent her back like she was in pain, hands resting on her stomach as her wailing voice filled the room.

Vaelor was quick to rush to her. He pulled her close to his chest as he examined her face, his back turned to me.

“Have you taken your medication?”

“Yes, but I couldn't sleep. The doctor said I should always have someone by my side so I could sleep.”

I saw a smile coating her lips as she was now facing me.

“Vae, I'm in pain! Am I going to die now before I get married?”

Vaelor pulled away and cupped her face. “You're not going to die now, not until I grant you your last wish.”

“I'm too weak, I can't climb the stairs.”

Vaelor scooped her off the floor and carried her in a bridal style. She gasped, wrapping her hands around his neck.

“Let me take you to your room. I'll stay with you until you fall asleep.”

With that, he was already walking away with her in his arms.

“What about Kimberly?” Clara asked, clearly not out of concern.

“Oh,” Vaelor paused, as if he just remembered that I exist.

He turned to face me.

“Go to sleep, Kimberly, don't wait for me.” Without waiting for my reply, he was already walking away with her.

I watched as my husband left to spend the night with his childhood sweetheart in the same house I lived in.

I didn't know when Vaelor got back home, but by the morning, I almost choked on my breath when I saw him flipping through the institution research documents I had stupidly left on the table last night after printing them out.

Last night, I had distracted myself from the thoughts of Clara and Vaelor searching for more institutions in the human world.

“Lincolnton medical institution.” He reads, sipping from his coffee. “When did you prepare this overseas project?” His brow arched, raising the University transfer application.

“A classmate asked me to grab the form for her.” My voice came flat, I pinched hard on my palms, but his eyes lingered on my shaking pinky finger.

“Sure. I know you hate the winter.”

I guess he didn't remember. Two winters ago, even though it was cold, I begged him to come with me to watch the falling flakes.

He dropped the cup of coffee, then turned to face me properly. “If you can't continue, you can quit. I'll appoint you to a position in one of Knight's companies.”

I closed my eyes. That's exactly the problem. Every achievement, every progress, and every paper is in the Knight's name.

I want to live for myself now. I want a name for myself.

I was about to say something when Clara's sweet voice swept through the room.

She was humming a melody and had the brightest smile on her face.

Without giving my application another look, he turned, facing Clara.

“Morning, Vae, morning Kimberly.” She greeted me, sitting in an empty seat. Her nightgown was too short, exposing her thighs as she sat.

“Vae, the testing of our wedding outfit is today before noon.”

“You know I'm doing this for her health,” Vaelor whispered to me, but I'm too far gone to care.

“Let's go talk about it in the study.”

I watched them leave, concealing my own emotion.

My phone peeped. It was a message from the lawyer. It's a soft copy of my marital status, and he told me to come pick the hardcopy I submitted yesterday.

My fingers tightened around the phone.

After three years of marriage…

This was what remained.

I stared at the marital status.

Single.

  • Chasing Back My Secret Luna   Chapter 54 We're not dating

Kimberly’s POVWhy does everybody decide to betray me?Maybe this would have been easier if I didn't have to work with the same two people who had betrayed me—and three, if I was counting Vaelor. The whole night, I can't stop thinking about it. It's not like I had developed any romantic feelings for Julian, but I truly saw him as a friend who had my back, especially after what I found out Dr. Fang was doing. Now, it turns out he was a traitor too, just like her. I wonder just how much about me he had been telling her while they were both snickering between each other, calling me a fool while I thought I had a real friend. This needs to stop happening.Morning comes and I don't even want to go to work anymore. I almost want to go on that break I was nearly forced into before. Instead, I carry myself forward, pretending I had not soaked my pillow with tears, pretending I had not been made a fool of once again. I think of all the patients that need me, who are hoping to see me today. I c

  • Chasing Back My Secret Luna   Chapter 53 Harsh Betrayal

Kimberly’s POVThe next day, I had expected Julian to avoid me, especially after the chaos of yesterday night, but he greeted me just as usual. It made me feel even worse than before. If only he could be angry, if only he would just yell and tell me that it was my fault he had to go through that, maybe it would be easier on me.But he was so understanding. When we were done doing our rounds on the red floor and treating indications, we went to the small cafeteria. While he was scooping up some of his soup, I told him, "I'm sorry for involving you in my business like this. I'm sure you wish you didn't get into this contract with me. If you want, we can just stage a fake breakup and—"He stopped eating his soup and placed his phone aside, staring at the plate of pale greenish liquid like it was about to give him the next part of the conversation that he needed to see. Eventually, he raised his eyes up to meet mine. Even though they seemed to be glimmering on the surface, I could find a

  • Chasing Back My Secret Luna   Chapter 52 Stop interfering

Vaelor's POV"How dare you!" The words were out of my mouth before I could hold them back. I had never approved of the relationship between Kimberly and this guy. Even if I was going to be replaced, I would be fine with anyone else—but not him. He looked like the type that would duck behind Kimberly for safety, and while he was diligent enough in his work, I didn't think he could protect Kimberly when it really mattered. It hit me like a sore spot when I remembered that I hadn't been able to protect her when it mattered, either.Clara, who was clearly responsible for the picture, saw the chaos she was about to unleash and wrapped her hand around Kimberly’s."Let's go canoeing!" she said, meaning to take both of them away from the scene.Once I saw them entering the canoe, I looked at the traitor who would dare to cheat on Kimberly. I wanted to punch him right across the face. Poor Kimberly looked so shocked; her heart couldn't take any more betrayal, I was sure of it. But I knew her s

Kimberly's POVWith Clara, there was always something to expect. And more than anybody else, I wished that most of the time those things could be positive, or things that didn't make my heart race in the wrong way. I knew that she was always plotting something behind that innocent facade, and I was just waiting for her to take off the mask and show her real colors at any given time. I knew that tonight would not be any different than all the other times; she would do the exact same thing.Nevertheless, I called Julian and asked if he could come because, once again, she was wiggling her Luna authority over me. As much as I hated it, I could not just ignore her. Perhaps I would draw the line after this second double date, because I didn't want to repeat this again.Julian was not enthusiastic over the line, and I was almost disposed to just telling him that he didn't have to bother about it. But I was desperate, so I just asked him again. He agreed, and even though he seemed like he wou

  • Chasing Back My Secret Luna   Chapter 50 Be careful of him

Kimberly's POV"We are taking these patients down to the White room. Isn't it amazing, Doctor Reed?" I said to Julian as we saw yet another patient being taken to the White floor. "If this continues, we are looking at patient levels dropping, and if that happens, this pandemic could be ending in just a couple more months. Our lives can go back to normal. That's wonderful, right?"I spilled all of this out in enthusiasm, and Julian looked like someone who was just coming out of sleep. "Oh yes, it really is..."Deep down, I intended to ask him what was wrong because the Julian I knew was full of energy. But I had done it several times this week, and every time he told me that he was alright. Pressing on the issue any further seemed bothersome; he was already doing so much for me, pretending to be in a relationship with me even though we were completely platonic friends. I could understand that he didn't want to be more than that.I kept the conversation minimal after that, hoping that h

  • Chasing Back My Secret Luna   Chapter 48 The Beta

Kimberly's POV"I don't know how I can thank you enough, Doctor Dove. You saved our Alice," the man at the hospital said. He turned out to be the Beta of this pack, and his daughter Alice was the little girl that I could not bring myself to give up on, especially after seeing her father's expression, as though his entire world had been taken away from him.And somehow, my will had metamorphosed itself into reality. A blue light emanating from my hands covered the girl, and her skin that had turned almost purple began to lighten until she looked much better. There was still a hint of purple in her skin, but when she was tested, she was at the same level as people in the yellow room that could be taken to the white room after some days.Nobody could believe it. There were myths about such a healing ability; people said that hundreds of years ago the moon goddess had blessed one person in every generation, but they had not seen it in so long that it had been forgotten. But my gift coming
