Serena's POV

I glared at Kyle as he clenched the steering wheel. The silence in the car was oppressive, but I didn't leap to break it. Let it hang there. Let him think.

His jaw tightened, his eyes forward. "You're serious?" he finally asked, his voice deep. Like he didn't want to know.

I nodded slowly, watching the dance of emotion on his face, surprise and confusion, and then another, something harder to place.

"She's Alexander's fiancée," I repeated. "Or, was. It's hard to say these days."

He blinked, catching my eye for a moment before turning back to the road. "Why didn't you ever mention her name?"

I huddled my arms around myself and leaned into the passenger seat. "Because then she was just a name. A betrayal. I never thought I'd have to lay eyes on her again. Certainly not like this."

Kyle took a slow breath, tapping his fingers once against the steering wheel. "I swear to you, Serena, I didn't know."

"I know," I whispered, looking out my window at the city lights. "But now you

Sophia's POV“Wait…” I said slowly. “You know Kyle’s ex-wife?”Damien’s silence was louder than an answer. He just kept his eyes on the people buying gas, his expression unreadable, but that silence told me everything.I swallowed hard against a hard lump, my mind reeling. Damien had known this the whole time, and said nothing?Damien didn't even flinch. He remained calm, but his eyes were more piercing than usual. "Yes. Turns out his first wife is an attorney. A bitch attorney. And his second wife? She's friends with one of my clients."I froze there. Kyle had been married twice. I remember him telling me that when I asked him about love. The door to Damien's car was already open before I could utter another word.He exited the car and shut the door behind him and went on to talk with the attendant about filling up the tank.I sat back down in the seat, my heart pounding. My brain reeled as I stared out through the windshield. How much do we really know about Kyle, anyway? He had bee

Sophia's POVThe hum of Damien’s car filled the silence, steady but almost oppressive. I sat stiffly in the passenger seat, aware of every passing second. It was different, being alone with Damien. Not terrible, not awkward the way you'd be with a stranger, but tensed, like there was a line between the two of us, and I was too afraid to cross it.The recollection of that one night, when I had kissed him, drunk and stupid as I was, flashed across my mind, and my face flushed. I did not know if he remembered, or if he cared, but the fear lingered on. And to add to it all, I had no idea what was going through his head. Was he playing his usual calm, unreadable game, or did he have secret motives that were beyond my reach? One thing was certain, though, his dedication to Serena wasn't in question. I was impressed with that. I was more impressed than ever with Serena, in fact. She had all of these sexy, powerful men, Damien, Kyle, even Alexander, albeit a wimp, fighting over her attenti

Serena's POVI stared at her, amazed. My heart skipped a beat. A couple of beats. Of all people, Pristine? She stood by Kyle's side with serene composure, wearing a tight emerald-green dress that fitted her body in all the right spots. Her hair was sleek, swept back behind one ear, makeup subtle but flawless. She was the type of girl who would be walking on the arm of a guy like Kyle. But I knew the truth. She had a habit of appearing when I least expected her.Kyle, unaware of the storm now brewing in my chest, touched her shoulder. "This is my new investor," he said again. "Pristine."Pristine.She didn't even bat an eyelash. She approached Damien first with a cheerful smile, as though we were all just standing there holding our breath."Damien!" she smiled and leaned in for a hug, wrapping her arms around him as if they were close friends.Damien was taken aback. "Wow. Spotless. What are you doing here? I didn't know you would be appearing?" She released the hug, laughing lightly.

Serena's POVShe gave me a brief look, shrugged like she wasn’t in the mood to chase answers, and headed straight for the hallway. “I’m going to dress up,” she called over her shoulder. “Hurry up. I’m not missing dinner because you’re still not ready to get dressed.”I rolled my eyes but was thankful she didn't press me further. I went to the guest bathroom, undressed, and stepped into the shower.Warm water pounded my skin, calming me, but my brain would not shut off. That kiss, it was so much more than flirting. Or maybe I was reading too much into it again.Damien had a way of getting under my skin. When I was done, I towel-dried my hair, slipped on my robe, and returned to the room to select a dress. I hadn't even managed to get my dress up when I heard the familiar click of Sophia's heels. She stood in front of me, wearing a completely ready-to-wear dress that hugged her body like it had been cast for her. Her makeup was flawless, and her earrings glittered like tiny chandeliers.

Serena's POV"I haven't thought about it to that extent," I whispered, and then followed with a wicked grin, "But that would be dramatic, wouldn't it?""I'd kill to see his reaction. He'd short-circuit. Might even fall in love with you all over again."I sat back and panted. "I just want him to fall in love with me because of me."Sophia raised an eyebrow. "That's nice and all, but you can bet when he finds out, he's going to feel some kind of way."I sat in silence for a moment, the metronome of the ticking wall clock reminding me that there was nothing to say. "You think he'll be angry?"“No,” she said quickly. “Surprised? Definitely. Confused? Absolutely. But upset? Maybe at first, but only because he’ll realize he was trying to protect a woman who could probably hire her own private army.”I smiled faintly, tracing the rim of my water bottle with my thumb. “Maybe you’re right.”Sophia stood up, brushing crumbs off her lap. "Of course I'm right, I'm always right. Now I just need to
