Chapter 31

There is a long pregnant pause as everyone falls silent. We can only hear a falling cutlery on the floor as it rings. I have no idea how they look or the expressions on their faces because all of my attention is on Devyn’s father.

Mark is stunned as he gapes at me. “What did you say, young lady?”

I quietly push my chair back and stand. I put both of palms on the table and lean forward, looking at him straight in the eyes.

“You’re as cold as ice,” I say.

“Sweetie, I think this is not the right time to—”

“I’m sorry, Suze,” I cut her off, “but I have to do this.” My defiant gaze remains on her husband who is frozen in shock.

“Devyn is a very talented artist and a successful one. As a father, you should be supporting him.”

I hear loud gasps from the women on the table. Devyn is still standing stiffly beside me. He is like a statue as he remains unmoving. I don’t even think that he’s breathing.
