Chase

Later that night, sitting in my suite with my balcony door open hoping to catch her scent on the breeze, I was lost in thoughts of her. I have never gotten sidetracked from anything that I was working on. Until now. Until her. I had to be near her again. My coronation ball will be the perfect time to formally introduce myself to her.

Picking up my phone, I called Sam, my secretary and a friend so close we could be siblings.

“Hey, Chase. Is everything alright? It’s late.”, she answered, a bit out of breath, as though she dove for her phone.

“Sam, I need you to send an invitation to Annalyse Mitchell and her family in River Moon pack for the ball.”

“Chase, the seating charts are done and everything has already been confirmed. Kind of short notice, don’t ya think? We’re only a couple of weeks out.”, she answered.

“Sam, there’s zero negotiating on this. Do as I ask. Or I will command it.”, I answered. I’m not generally so short with her, but Lyse has to be here for this. She’s going to be my queen in the near future.

“Ok, ok. Chase, is everything alright? You seem, I don’t know, moody.”, she replied cautiously, probably feeling my alpa aura pulsing through the phone line.

“Yeah, Sam. I’m good.”, I answered, softening my tone toward her. Not normally prone to apologies, to anyone, I know she wasn’t expecting one. But I felt as though I owed her one, anyway. “Listen, I know you’ve put a ton of work into this event. But it’s important.”

“No problem at all. I’ll get it handled. Just text me her information and I’ll have it hand delivered tomorrow.” I could sense her hesitation as though she had a question. “Who is she?”, boldly asking what no one else, except maybe my beta, Ryker would.

“You’ll see, Sam. For now, that’s my concern.”, he answered shortly. “Thanks for getting it done on short notice. You’re the best almost sister I’ve ever had.”, I told her.

“I know, C. I know. You’re alright too.”, she said with a smile before hanging up.

I got up and walked out to the balcony to clear my head and refocus on work. We’ve had rogue attacks on the border pack territories lately. It’s more organized, somehow, and seems as though it may in some way involve other supernaturals. It just feels… different. As though they’re searching rather than looking to attack. I have Ryker on it.

I paced back into my suite and, sinking into my bed, thought about solutions. When I drifted to sleep though, I was thinking about blue-violet eyes looking at me with need and amber hair fanned across the pillow next to me.
