#Chapter 4: Not Fated

Tessa's POV

I blink in confusion. "I…"

She narrows her eyes at me. When she speaks, her voice is as sithery and sharp as a viper's.

"I did some investigating, you know," she begins coldly. "And I found that you weren't on the guest list for today's events. And yet here you are! So that begs the question…"

She leans in close, examining me suspiciously.

"How exactly did you manage to make it into this banquet hall?" She asks. "What strings did you pull to get that conductor booted?"

"N-No, I di-didn't do anything," I'm reaching for words. "It was...just an emergency-"

And then Carol rolls her eyes dismissively, cutting me off once more with an impatient interruption.

"Don't get your hopes up, Tessa," she says curtly. Her voice is blunt and ruthlessly no-nonsense. "Even if Evander won't be actively looking for his Fated mate in the future and ends up having to have a baby with you, he'll never bring someone like you–his poor, disabled wife who can't take care of herself–out in public."

She pauses and laughs a little. "Especially not in any sort of way that could affect his campaign."

"I do–I do have a job, you know," I begin carefully. "One I excel at, too. As a matter of fact, that's why I was called in to be here today. I'm fully capable of being independent."

Carol's lip curls in distaste.

I know she doubts me. I know how she sees me. I know how she and all the rest of Evander's staff look down on me and belittle me.

"This isn't ancient werewolf society," I add gently. "I mean, we don't need exceptional hearing to detect danger and stay alive anymore. We're so much better off now. And with the hearing aids I wear…"

Carol glowers at me. "Right," she says slowly. "Those hearing aids of yours."

I breathe out a heavy sigh. "I'm leaving now, Carol. I promise I don't want to disturb Evander's public image more than I already have. I was told to come here for the children, so now that I've done that–"

Suddenly, Janice walks towards me with the group of children in tow. "Miss Tessa!" She breathes out a sigh of relief. "Thank goodness we found you. Could you escort the children to their school bus, please?"

I nod.

"Great." Janice smiles at me briefly. "Thanks so much!"

And with that, she's gone.

I look over at the group of children. "Alright, kids!" I say, doing as much as I can do to make my voice sound bright and cheery despite the day's events. "Let's get moving!"

Carol glares at me for a moment before turning on her heel. She starts to walk past me, and as she does, I feel a strange pop! Sensation in my ears.

"Follow me!" I say as I begin to walk.

Something's off, though.

The sound of my own voice…

It's as though I'm underwater. I can barely hear it at all.

As I step outside the banquet hall's door and towards the parking lot, I suddenly realize that things are distinctly off.

I can't hear anything at all.

I reach my hands to my ears, and that's when I know for certain.

My hearing aids are gone.

My heart beats in my chest like a drum. It's exceptionally debilitating to try and navigate the world with only a fraction of the sensory input I'm used to.

Carol is behind this, no doubt, but the sheer cruelty to remove a deaf woman's hearing aids…

What could I have possibly done to deserve this?

But I don't have time to think more about this.

I've got the group of children in tow.

I can see the school bus up ahead. It's not far off. This shouldn't be too difficult.

Can't get caught off-guard. Can't let the stress show. I keep looking back and forth, guiding the children along carefully.

But as we traverse the road, I begin to notice strange looks heading my way from passersby. I must look a little panicked. I'm not used to being without my hearing aids.

One of the children grabs at my hand and looks up at me.

They mouth something, but I can't make out the words. Miss Tessa, probably.

Or Are you okay?

"I… I'm fine," I say slowly, relieved to see the other side of the street just up ahead where the bus is parked. "I'll be fine. Let's just get settled now, okay?"

Finally, I breathe out a heavy sigh as I watch the children file onto the bus one by one. The doors hiss shut and I think I can finally leave.

There's an off ringing in my head, and my ears throb dully where my hearing aids were pulled out.

It's fine. I'll get home safe, and I have another spare set that I can wear once I get back–

Lost in the relentless tangle of my own thoughts, I step into the road, preparing to make my way back to the car that drove me to the banquet hall to begin with.

But as I'm walking, I see a strange sight. Through the windows of the schoolbus, which is headed in the other direction, I can see all the children waving at me frantically.

I frown and squint at them, trying to figure out what's going on.

Am I missing something?

Probably, considering that I can't hear–

I shake my head and whirl around, trying to see what might be happening.

And that's when I spot it.

A motorcycle, rushing towards me all at once, dangerously close, close, closer–

I can sense the world spinning, and the next second, my back is flat on the pavement.

And as my eyes flutter shut, everything fades away until the pain is all that's left.

Tessa’s POV"What are you doing here?"When I hear the sheer coldness in Evander’s voice as he looks at me, my heart feels like it’s freezing over.I want to explain, but just as I open my mouth, Carol appears behind Evander and shoots me a smug smile.Carol. I grit my teeth as I stare at her.Of course she would set me up like this.It makes sense–too much sense. I should have known better than to trust anything she’d rope me into, but the sense of urgency she’d created got the best of me, and I’d been swept up in her lie.She used my own fear of disappointing Evander against me.And it worked.Doesn’t she know I’ve already lost Evander? Why is she still trying to sabotage me?"Members of the Alpha Council, I’m terribly sorry for this interruption," Carol says, turning to look at all the men in suits. "Ms. Tessa here is just a hearing-impaired member who seems to have lost her way in the building. I’ll handle this matter shortly."My face burns with humiliation. It’s not just the wa

Tessa’s POV"I can handle this myself!"Before I can overthink things, I point towards the doorway."I’ve got a first aid kit in my office under my desk," I tell Evander. He nods, and–still carrying me–takes me out of the classroom and into the office. Once the door closes behind us, Evander pulls out the first aid kit and looks down at me expectantly."Show me your hand," Evander instructs firmly. I find myself blushing at the sureness of his tone. "It’s really not that bad."I hiss as Evander presses a wad of gauze against the wound, and his lips twist."You’re a bad liar, Tessa," he says.Oh, you have no idea. I bite my lip as he carefully cleans the rest of the blood from the wound."I’m sure Mira is dreadfully sorry about what happened to you," Evander says coldly, tone distant and detached. "As I’m sure you know, it was nothing more than an accident, and I’m hoping you won’t hold it against her."So he’s just doing all of this to get a chance to defend Mira.Lovely.Even if t

Tessa’s POVI…want to initiate the rejection and move out.Evander raises an eyebrow."It–it’s because of the timing of it all," I add hastily, stumbling over the words. "I just… don’t want to interfere with you being with your true mate. I don’t want to disrupt… whatever progress your union is trying to make.""Plus," I add, rubbing my Mark, "It kind of… hurts, in the meantime."I look at Evander desperately, seeking, searching for any kind of sympathy or understanding. But rather than being appeased by my words, he seems bitter and irritated."I will handle this matter," he says coldly. "I’ll let you know when it’s time for the divorce and rejection. In the meantime, I’ll be staying in the study."I purse my lips. His tone of voice, despite everything, still hurts."How long will all of this take?" I ask.Evander frowns, clearly annoyed by the question. "What, are you in a hurry to get divorced? "My mouth falls open. "I–""Don’t worry," he continues. "It won’t be long. Probably

  • Chasing His Silent Luna Back     #Chapter 10: Irresistable

Tessa’s POVEvander never comes back to our room that night.I stay up all night, restless and consumed by the possibilities of what might have happened.Or–there’s only one possibility, really.I’m not stupid. If Evander didn’t come back to bed with me, that means he’s sleeping with Mira.I knew I was going to be replaced eventually. Evander made that clear from the start–I was always going to be something to trade away at the soonest opportunity.I just never thought it would happen so quickly. My Mark sits on my left collarbone, just above my heart. I remember the day Evander gave it to me like it was yesterday. My wedding day, my Marking Ceremony. It all used to feel like bliss. Not so much, anymore.I can actively feel the agony of my separation from Evander, too. My Mark burns and aches, the pain coming and going in waves. I can feel my heart breaking, a terrible loss made physically manifest. As a common courtesy, I think after Evander agrees my divorce plan, I’ll have to ask

Evander’s POV"Your light should be all fixed by now."I look Mira up and down carefully as I deliver the news. The Omega is just now packing up his toolkit, and the lightbulb in the chandelier is burning brightly. It was flickering when I first entered the room, but there was something almost… artificial about the way it wasn’t working.Something manufactured. It’s fine. I’d only gone into Mira’s room to check on the light and ensure it got repaired swiftly. Now that the task is completed, I turn towards the door, ready to make my way back to Tessa, when Mira suddenly grabs my arm."Thanks so much for coming here with me," she says breathily. My voice remains impassive. "No problem.""It’s very… moving, you know," Mira continues. Her hand starts to creep up my arm. "Your passion. Your devotion. Even to that little wife of yours, considering how sickly she is…""Right," I say slowly.Mira leans in, looking up at me through her lashes. "I mean, don’t get me wrong. It’s so honourable th

Tessa’s POV"This matter isn’t urgent."Evander’s cold, impassive voice cuts through the air, and the reaction is immediate.Mira’s eyes widen slightly.Carol purses her lips and looks down.Madeleine glances over at me, smiling ever so slightly. And I’m frozen in my seat, trying to decipher exactly what his words mean.Does he mean that he would like to take it slow with Mira? Because he’s certain they’ll have a great time knowing each other and gradually falling in love?Or Maybe it’s because of me. Maybe Evander doesn’t want to rush things with Mira because of me.Or is it that just a naive, foolish hope of mine? This matter isn’t urgent. Just four words, and I’m completely and utterly preoccupied.Evander raises an eyebrow, clearly noticing the shift in the room’s atmosphere."I’ve got things under control," he continues coolly.Mira does her best to smile, but when she does speak, her voice is tinged with annoyance."Usually when Fated mates meet at a ceremony they get engaged w
