Tessa’s POV
"Fated–fated mate?"
I breathe out the words like they’re the opening lines to a horror movie, like I’m terrified of speaking them aloud.
Like if I somehow hold them back, they’d somehow stop being true.
Evander has found his Fated mate. Which means things between the two of us…
As I stare up at them wide-eyed, Carol’s rude voice cuts through the room eagerly.
"Since Evander has found his Fated mate, it’s time to get things ready for the Rejection Ceremony and the divorce."
"I agree," Mira chimes in, lips pursed in a prim and deceptively sweet smile.
Carol and Mira look down at me, eyes gleaming something wicked and vicious. I know this isn’t anyone’s doing. It’s not anyone’s fault.
It’s fate.
Still, they both seem awfully pleased by just how fate has decided to conspire against me.
My hands curl into fists beneath the dining room table. I can feel each individual shard of my heart clinking around my ribcage like loose dice.
And our baby…
I squeeze my eyes shut briefly. No. Can’t think about that now. I’ll have to figure it out later.
I glance at Evander with wide, pleading eyes, desperate to see what he has to say.
There’s a cool hesitation haunting him as he glances passively between Mira and I. Just as he’s about to speak, though, a sharp ringing sound cuts through the air.
Evander pulls his phone out of his pocket and glancing at the caller ID. "I’ve got to take this."
He slips out of the dining room quickly and closes the door behind him, leaving Carol, Mira, and I alone.
Evander’s POV
By the time I hang up the phone, I couldn’t be more grateful for the distraction.
The tension when I introduced Mira to Tessa as my Fated mate…
Oh, she looked heartbroken.
Rationally, Mira and Carol and everyone else are right. I want to be with my Fated mate–it’s time to make that happen.
But it all feels… Off, somehow.
I can’t shake the image from my mind.
Tessa standing in front of me, eyes wide and pleading and utterly devastated.
It’s those eyes. Those damn pleading eyes.
By doing this, I’m going to hurt her. And knowing that is somehow stopping me from doing what needs to be done.
Tessa’s POV
I couldn’t come up with a more hellish combination if I wanted to.
Still, I do my best to extend a weak smile towards Mira. There’s no reason we can’t handle this gracefully. We lock eyes, and I raise a hand.
"I…" I begin slowly.
Mira looks away from me abruptly, gaze sliding past me like I’m not even there.
My jaw tightens.
"Beta, give me a tour of the villa," Mira says coolly. "I’d like to familiarize myself with my future home."
I barely manage to suppress my scowl.
This is my home. The home Evander and I share–have shared for years.
"It would be my pleasure," Carol replies, bowing her head to Mira.
They both shoot me thin, plastic smiles as they slip out of the room.
The door slams shut behind them, rattling the house to the foundations.
At least now I get the chance to plan my next move.
So Mira is Evander’s Fated mate, and as our marriage contract suggested, he’s going to leave me for her. But I’m carrying Evander’s child now...
I should let him know about my pregnancy before he makes any decision, right?
I need to check the contract.
With some difficulty thanks to my injuries from the accident, I stand up from the table and take stock of my injuries.
Bruises, scraps, and cuts make up the majority of it, but my bones ache in a way that has me clenching my knuckles and gritting my teeth.
Still, I manage to make my way upstairs to my bedroom. Once I’m there, I cross the room to my dresser drawer, where I keep all my important files and documents.
I pull out a copy of the contract I’d signed years ago, back when Evander and I first agreed to get married.
I sink into an armchair and grip the thick stack of paper tightly.
Way back at the very start of things, I’d been swept away by excitement, overpowered by the strength of my own love for Evander. So I’d barely bothered to read the prenuptial agreement before signing it.
But now, I’m hoping there’s something in it that could save me and my baby.
I skim through the fine print, turning the pages with care. Most of this is what I’d initially assumed it to be–statements on division of finances, on managing media appearance, on the terms and conditions of a potential child–
Wait.
My heart suddenly freezes in my chest like it’s been struck by a of ice.
There.
Tucked away in small black text at the corner of a page are the words that have the potential to ruin my whole life.
It’s a small supplementary clause in the child-rearing and parental rights section:
Unless the decision is revised at a later point, Tessa Everly will remain on birth control for the duration of this matrimonial agreement.
Should Ms. Everly unexpectedly become pregnant, Evander Redding will maintain sole custody of any resulting children, with Ms. Everly fully forfeiting parental rights upon the signing of this contract.
I can hardly believe what I’m reading.
Ms. Everly fully forfeiting parental rights upon the signing of this contract.
That means if our marriage is over, I won’t just be losing Evander.
I’ll be losing my baby, too.
The weight of the words hit me like a ton of bricks. The dread settles heavy in my chest.
I stare at the contract, my mind racing for a way out of this terrible situation. Then—click. The bedroom door creaks open.
I freeze and look towards the door, wide-eyed and still holding the marriage contract.
Evander hovers in the doorway, gaze raking over me slowly. His brow is furrowed, lips pursed.
When he speaks, his voice is cold.
"What are you doing?"
Tessa’s POV"What are you doing here?"When I hear the sheer coldness in Evander’s voice as he looks at me, my heart feels like it’s freezing over.I want to explain, but just as I open my mouth, Carol appears behind Evander and shoots me a smug smile.Carol. I grit my teeth as I stare at her.Of course she would set me up like this.It makes sense–too much sense. I should have known better than to trust anything she’d rope me into, but the sense of urgency she’d created got the best of me, and I’d been swept up in her lie.She used my own fear of disappointing Evander against me.And it worked.Doesn’t she know I’ve already lost Evander? Why is she still trying to sabotage me?"Members of the Alpha Council, I’m terribly sorry for this interruption," Carol says, turning to look at all the men in suits. "Ms. Tessa here is just a hearing-impaired member who seems to have lost her way in the building. I’ll handle this matter shortly."My face burns with humiliation. It’s not just the wa
Tessa’s POV"I can handle this myself!"Before I can overthink things, I point towards the doorway."I’ve got a first aid kit in my office under my desk," I tell Evander. He nods, and–still carrying me–takes me out of the classroom and into the office. Once the door closes behind us, Evander pulls out the first aid kit and looks down at me expectantly."Show me your hand," Evander instructs firmly. I find myself blushing at the sureness of his tone. "It’s really not that bad."I hiss as Evander presses a wad of gauze against the wound, and his lips twist."You’re a bad liar, Tessa," he says.Oh, you have no idea. I bite my lip as he carefully cleans the rest of the blood from the wound."I’m sure Mira is dreadfully sorry about what happened to you," Evander says coldly, tone distant and detached. "As I’m sure you know, it was nothing more than an accident, and I’m hoping you won’t hold it against her."So he’s just doing all of this to get a chance to defend Mira.Lovely.Even if t
Tessa’s POVI…want to initiate the rejection and move out.Evander raises an eyebrow."It–it’s because of the timing of it all," I add hastily, stumbling over the words. "I just… don’t want to interfere with you being with your true mate. I don’t want to disrupt… whatever progress your union is trying to make.""Plus," I add, rubbing my Mark, "It kind of… hurts, in the meantime."I look at Evander desperately, seeking, searching for any kind of sympathy or understanding. But rather than being appeased by my words, he seems bitter and irritated."I will handle this matter," he says coldly. "I’ll let you know when it’s time for the divorce and rejection. In the meantime, I’ll be staying in the study."I purse my lips. His tone of voice, despite everything, still hurts."How long will all of this take?" I ask.Evander frowns, clearly annoyed by the question. "What, are you in a hurry to get divorced? "My mouth falls open. "I–""Don’t worry," he continues. "It won’t be long. Probably
Tessa’s POVEvander never comes back to our room that night.I stay up all night, restless and consumed by the possibilities of what might have happened.Or–there’s only one possibility, really.I’m not stupid. If Evander didn’t come back to bed with me, that means he’s sleeping with Mira.I knew I was going to be replaced eventually. Evander made that clear from the start–I was always going to be something to trade away at the soonest opportunity.I just never thought it would happen so quickly. My Mark sits on my left collarbone, just above my heart. I remember the day Evander gave it to me like it was yesterday. My wedding day, my Marking Ceremony. It all used to feel like bliss. Not so much, anymore.I can actively feel the agony of my separation from Evander, too. My Mark burns and aches, the pain coming and going in waves. I can feel my heart breaking, a terrible loss made physically manifest. As a common courtesy, I think after Evander agrees my divorce plan, I’ll have to ask
Evander’s POV"Your light should be all fixed by now."I look Mira up and down carefully as I deliver the news. The Omega is just now packing up his toolkit, and the lightbulb in the chandelier is burning brightly. It was flickering when I first entered the room, but there was something almost… artificial about the way it wasn’t working.Something manufactured. It’s fine. I’d only gone into Mira’s room to check on the light and ensure it got repaired swiftly. Now that the task is completed, I turn towards the door, ready to make my way back to Tessa, when Mira suddenly grabs my arm."Thanks so much for coming here with me," she says breathily. My voice remains impassive. "No problem.""It’s very… moving, you know," Mira continues. Her hand starts to creep up my arm. "Your passion. Your devotion. Even to that little wife of yours, considering how sickly she is…""Right," I say slowly.Mira leans in, looking up at me through her lashes. "I mean, don’t get me wrong. It’s so honourable th
Tessa’s POV"This matter isn’t urgent."Evander’s cold, impassive voice cuts through the air, and the reaction is immediate.Mira’s eyes widen slightly.Carol purses her lips and looks down.Madeleine glances over at me, smiling ever so slightly. And I’m frozen in my seat, trying to decipher exactly what his words mean.Does he mean that he would like to take it slow with Mira? Because he’s certain they’ll have a great time knowing each other and gradually falling in love?Or Maybe it’s because of me. Maybe Evander doesn’t want to rush things with Mira because of me.Or is it that just a naive, foolish hope of mine? This matter isn’t urgent. Just four words, and I’m completely and utterly preoccupied.Evander raises an eyebrow, clearly noticing the shift in the room’s atmosphere."I’ve got things under control," he continues coolly.Mira does her best to smile, but when she does speak, her voice is tinged with annoyance."Usually when Fated mates meet at a ceremony they get engaged w
