Outside, Christian gripped the steering wheel harder as he turned onto the main road. His thoughts churned. He wanted to believe she was safe here.

But the job had changed. It was no longer routine.

Too many pieces were moving at once.

He turned at a junction, scanning his mirrors. His eyes flicked toward the trees ahead.

And there she was again.

The woman.

Blond hair. Cold, unreadable stare. Standing beside a tree, half-shadowed by branches.

Something about her felt familiar—but wrong. Like a face from a nightmare barely remembered.

Christian blinked.

She was gone.

But this time, his pulse didn’t settle.

It quickened.

He dragged a hand over his face, trying to clear his head of the image of the woman by the tree. One second she was there, the next—gone. Just a flicker. A flash of lightning. Too fast. Too quiet. No one else had seen her—or so he told himself.

He gripped the wheel tighter until his knuckles paled, slammed his foot down, and veered sharply. Then another turn. And anothe

  • Chasing Midnight Promises    Chapter 53: Long Awaited Tuesday

The rest of the evening moved like it didn’t exist.Mia locked herself in her room, drowning in shame and the sting of rejection. The silence inside those four walls screamed louder than anything. She clutched her pillow and stared at the ceiling for hours, unable to understand how one moment of vulnerability had ended in humiliation. Her skin still tingled where Christian had touched her, her pride still raw from the way he had walked away.Meanwhile, Christian buried himself in the basement. The air felt heavier than usual, like even the walls knew something had broken. He kept pacing, jaw clenched, fists tight. He couldn’t imagine what it would be like to face Mia after that. But in his heart, he had made a decision. From now on, it was strictly professional. No lines blurred. His duty was to protect her, not take advantage of her pain.Upstairs, Raven sat on the couch, her phone pressed to her ear. She had called Noah more times than she could count. Still no response. Every call

Christian cupped Mia's face gently, his thumb brushing along the curve of her cheek, his fingers smoothing over her brow like he was committing her to memory. He stared into her eyes with a softness that stole the air from her lungs."Do you really want this?" he asked, his voice husky, barely above a whisper.Mia didn’t answer with words. Her lips met his in a kiss that trembled with hunger and heat. That was her answer—a kiss that wasn’t soft, but certain. She poured everything into it: confusion, need, pain, longing. He responded just as fiercely, his hands roaming her back like he needed to feel every breath she took. But then, something shifted.Christian broke the kiss and stepped back. His breath trembled, and his hands dropped from her body as if letting go of something sacred. His chest rose and fell, uneven, his eyes no longer locked on hers."I can’t," he said.Mia's heart plummeted. Her voice came out tight. "What do you mean you can’t?"He took another step back, like spa

Christian swallowed hard. His hands dropped away like they’d been burned. He stepped back, jaw tight, eyes not meeting hers. He’d crossed a line. Broken something he swore he wouldn’t. And yet… part of him wasn’t sorry.“I didn’t mean to,” he said, voice hoarse. But the way he looked at her said otherwise.Mia stood frozen, every emotion she’d buried clawing to the surface—shock, confusion, anger, something else.Something dangerous.Because for a second, she hadn’t wanted to pull away. Not even a little. She opened her mouth, but nothing came. And for once—he had no words. Then the silence cracked.Reality hit her like a slap, yanking her out of the daze. Her eyes widened. Her whole body tensed. Then she exploded. She stormed toward Christian and slapped him—hard. The sound cracked through the room. Christian’s head turned sharply with the blow, but he didn’t move. He stood still, jaw tight, gaze lowered, the sting spreading across his cheek like a brand.Mia stood in front of him, h

  • Chasing Midnight Promises    Chapter Fifty: Soft. Accidental. Brief. But real.

Mia walked slowly down the narrow passageway, each step echoing off the walls. The air was dry, thick with dust and an eerie stillness that seemed to press in on her. The corridor stretched longer than she expected, lit only by flickering bulbs that cast trembling shadows on the cracked concrete. She wrapped her arms tightly around herself as a sudden gust of cold air swept past. It wasn’t just cool—it was cutting, like fingers of ice crawling beneath her skin.A shiver ran down her spine, but she didn’t stop. Her legs moved like they weren’t hers anymore, like something deeper was pulling her forward. Then she heard it. A soft hum—low at first, barely there. It sounded like dozens of computer monitors buzzing at once. The farther she walked, the louder it became. Her pulse quickened. Curiosity and unease wrestled inside her.“Is someone living down here?” she whispered, brows tightening. “No… it’s just me, Raven, and Christian. So… who else?”The hallway curved, then straightened aga

Mia tried to wave it off. “He probably just went out to sort something quickly,” she said with a small shrug, though her voice lacked its usual steadiness.Raven, still standing by the door, didn’t look convinced. “Doesn’t seem like that. If he went out for something urgent, why is the jeep still parked outside?Mia looked up, her brow creasing. “Is it still there?”Raven nodded. “Right where it was yesterday.”A pinch of discomfort settled in Mia’s chest. That was new. Christian wouldn't just disappear without saying anything. He had routines, quiet habits. If he wasn’t speaking directly, he’d leave a message—always. Whether it was five minutes or five hours, he let her know.Still, she rubbed her temples and exhaled. “Maybe it was urgent,” she murmured. “He’ll be back soon. I’ll call and check where he is.”Raven watched her for a beat, then gave a small nod. “Alright. I’ll bring your food up in a minute.”When the door clicked shut behind her, the quiet returned, pressing in around

  • Chasing Midnight Promises    Chapter Forty-eight: Is Christian Gone?

Sunday morning unwrapped itself in slow motion. The golden light drifted in through the curtains, painting gentle lines across Mia’s bed. Outside, birds chirped softly, as if unsure whether the world was awake yet. The breeze that slipped through the cracked window carried the smell of dew and distant flowers.Mia stirred beneath the covers, her limbs reluctant to move. As she shifted to her side and tried to sit up, a sudden clang exploded in her head. She flinched, eyes squeezing shut, and fell back against the pillow. Her pulse pounded behind her temples. She breathed through her mouth, jaw clenched, waiting for the pressure to ease—but it didn’t. The air in the room, once light and soft, now felt heavier, almost oppressive. She swallowed hard, confusion swimming behind her eyes. Then the memories returned, one after the other.Last night. Her anger. The fury that had surged through her chest like fire. Her voice cracking with frustration. The closet doors flung open. Shoes flying.
