Third-person POV

Mia shoved the phone away. She didn’t know where it landed, and honestly, she didn’t care. Her heart thundered in her chest—Raven needed her.

She winced, pushing against the mattress, ignoring the sharp ache in her ribs. Her legs trembled, but she forced herself upright. Christian stepped toward her, his hand already halfway out.

“I’ve got it,” she breathed through gritted teeth. He paused but didn’t retreat.

She pressed one foot to the cold floor, then the other. Her body screamed in protest. Still, she kept going. The sheets tangled around her legs. Her knees wobbled as pain clamped down harder.

She panted, arms shaking as she fought to rise. Christian reached out again.

“Let me—”

“I’ve got it,” she repeated, breathless. But she didn’t. Her legs folded. She slumped halfway off the bed, twisted in an awkward bend like a half-folded paper doll.

Christian raised a brow. Then came the smallest, most defeated grin.

“Help,” she muttered. He blinked—then burst into laughte

“No,” I mumbled, then grabbed the first thing I saw—a yellow sundress—and handed it to her.She looked from the dress to me, then back at the dress, and then burst out laughing.“This would look amazing on you,” she said, grinning. “But unless we’re applying to fashion school, I don’t think it fits the dress code.”That snapped me awake. I laughed too, a real laugh that felt incredibly good. But then came the knock. It was Mom.“Raven,” she said, her voice tight. “You have a call. It sounds... urgent.”Raven turned toward me slowly, her smile fading. She opened the door and reached for the phone.“Hello?” Raven said, her voice soft and cautious. There was a pause. I watched her expression shift slowly—first confusion, then a wave of dread that clouded her features. Her grip on the phone loosened as she looked at me.“It’s my mom,” she whispered. “They’re driving out now… and Noah is with them.”Something dropped inside me, like ice melting down my spine. We didn’t speak after that. Raven and I stood at the front door like statues carved from suspense. The door was shut, but the glass panel let us see everything—the darkening driveway, the bruised sky glowing in shades of violet and gold, the porch lights flickering on and casting soft halos across the concrete. My fingers curled tightly around the frame while Raven shifted nervously beside me, her eyes flicking toward the driveway every few seconds. The warmth of the day had slipped away, leaving behind a tension that hummed in the air like a waiting storm.Mom had heard the sharp double honk of Dad’s car from the kitchen. She rushed in, apron still tied around her waist, streaks of flour on her cheek like forgotten war paint. The scent of cinnamon and garlic butter trailed behind her, but nobody noticed. Right now, food was the last thing on our minds. We were all waiting—for answers. For truth. For the storm we feared was rolling in behind Noah’s name. Then we heard it—the car door shutting.Dad’s footsteps cr

Hours passed like clouds dragging across the sky. Then Victoria's phone rang. The sound made all of us jump. She grabbed it quickly, fingers fumbling with the screen. Her mouth opened, but no words came at first. Her face shifted, slowly crumbling. Then—her voice rose, sharp and desperate.“Why should he be arrested?! That’s not possible! My son can’t be behind bars!”She stood there, frozen. The call ended. She turned to Raven, eyes wide and full of something that was no longer just panic—it was fear, and guilt, and something darker.“I’m sorry,” she whispered. “I have to go.”And she was gone before anyone could stop her.The door swung shut behind her.And once again, the room fell quiet.More hours passed, and Mom kept doing what she could to keep Raven calm. She sat close, held her hand at times, and spoke in the kind of voice you use when someone’s world is slowly caving in.“Sweetheart, it’ll be fine,” she kept saying. “They’ll sort everything out. Just give it a little time.”

Victoria, Raven's mother, locked eyes filled with dread with her husband, James Bradford. Her breath hitched, as if something sharp had lodged between her ribs.“What’s wrong with Noah?” her voice cracked, barely more than a whisper.James drew in a long, labored breath. His eyes flicked toward the window, then back to her. The muscles in his jaw tightened.“The police are at the house,” he said quietly. “Ellen’s parents called for his arrest. He’s fighting them off.”Victoria staggered. “What?!” she gasped, the word tearing from her throat. Her hands flew to her mouth. For a moment, she just stood there, trembling. Then she turned sharply and rushed to Raven’s bedside. She kissed her daughter quickly on the forehead, whispered something none of us could hear, and spun toward the door.James stepped in front of her, calm but unyielding.“Where are you running off to?” he asked, his voice low.Victoria tried to move past him, frantic now. Her breath came in rapid bursts, fingers twitch

The next time I opened my eyes, the light was softer, not as harsh. My head felt heavy, but my chest lighter than it had before. I blinked a few times and shifted my gaze slowly—to the nurse standing by the window. She was tall, dark-skinned, dressed in sea-blue scrubs with her name tag clipped over her chest pocket. Her braided hair was pinned up neatly, and a stethoscope rested around her neck. She smiled kindly, walking over to adjust the I.V. beside me.I swallowed. My voice came out hoarse. “Is… is Raven going to be okay?”She glanced at Raven’s bed, her smile softening. “She will be. She just passed out from shock. Her vitals are stable now. What she needs is plenty of rest.”A breath escaped my lungs—relief, but it didn’t last.My voice dropped lower. “What about Ellen?”The nurse hesitated. And in that moment of silence, the panic returned. My hands gripped the sheet beneath me as I tried to sit up. “Please—Ellen—what happened to her?”“No, no, don’t get up,” the nurse said qu

I was panicking. My heart thundered so hard I felt it in my ears. My breaths were sharp and broken, like I couldn’t get enough air. Raven was limp in my arms. Her body was so still, it scared me more than whatever was behind that locked door. And the door... it was still locked. What do I do? What do I do?My brain wasn’t working. It was like my thoughts had scattered into the air, lost in the echo of Raven’s scream. My chest tightened. My hands trembled. And then, my body did what my mind couldn’t.I screamed.A piercing, gut-wrenching sound ripped from my lungs, tearing through the silence of the school washroom. It was raw. Wild. I screamed again—louder—until I could hear my own voice bounce back at me from the tiled walls. My throat burned, but I didn’t stop. I kept screaming, hoping someone would hear. Someone had to.And then I heard it—footsteps. Voices.“Where’s it coming from?!”“The girls’ washroom!”The door burst open. A group of seniors and two teachers stumbled in, eyes
