Chapter 3

مؤلف: Ferrycraft
Tobias trembled slightly when he heard that. He wanted to deny it outright, but then he remembered that he hadn't heard from me in three years—not since I left him.

His throat tightened. Still, he stubbornly insisted, "No, that's impossible! Adeline signed for the divorce papers I sent her. How could she be dead?"

Without waiting for Glenn to respond, Tobias rushed out of the interrogation room, his face deathly pale.

He braced himself against the wall and took a moment to steady himself.

…

As soon as Glenn revealed where he'd hidden my body, the team set out for the location with a group of officers.

Tobias sat in the car and watched the streets slide past, each corner more familiar than the last. Then, memories of how we met came flooding back.

It had happened on this very street. He'd borrowed my art tube and used it to knock a fugitive out. The man had passed out on the spot, but the tube had been badly bent in the process.

Inside the tube was a unique piece by a famous artist that I'd managed to track down overseas. It was the kind of work that money alone couldn't buy.

I understood Tobias' intent, so I said nothing about where the artwork came from. Even though it hurt to see it damaged, I didn't ask him to pay for it either.

A week later, he came to see me with an original painting by a renowned artist.

Dark circles hung beneath Tobias' eyes, and he said cautiously, "Cézanne's paintings were almost impossible to find. Would you accept a Matisse as compensation?"

That afternoon, we talked about art, painting, and the fugitive. We never seemed to run out of things to say.

Tobias and I were like two parallel lines, never meant to meet. Somehow, fate brought us together.

Later, I learned he'd spent the entire week asking everyone he could for help and paying a fortune to buy the painting. He'd said that if he couldn't find one, he wouldn't have an excuse to see me again.

And apparently, he'd rehearsed those endless conversations in his mind hundreds of times before we met.

So, when Tobias explained that the kiss had been one-sided, I believed him.

He deleted all of Celeste's contact information right in front of me and made it clear to her he wanted nothing more to do with her. And I forgave him.

After that, Tobias handed me his phone to check every day, let me know whenever he went out, and kept his distance from other women.

Celeste, on the other hand, kept quiet in class and tried to make herself less noticeable. But the rumors about her kept spreading.

Unable to take the pressure any longer, she stopped me and begged, "Addie, everyone at school is saying I was the other woman who tried to come between you and Tobias.

"I made a terrible mistake that day. I wasn't thinking straight, and I know what I did was wrong. Could you please help set the record straight?"

Celeste sobbed uncontrollably, looking like someone who had nowhere else to turn. It was as though I'd been her last resort.

"I won't do it."

I had a few cutting remarks ready, but her helpless look made me swallow them. I sighed and added, "Sometimes, saying nothing is the best response."

Celeste understood what I meant. Tears streamed down her face as she looked up at me. Then, she nodded.

"I'm sorry, Addie. I let you down."

As coursework piled up, the rumors gradually died down.

But when the midterm projects were graded, Celeste missed out on first place by just 0.1 point and lost her shot at a scholarship.

The rumors, which had finally died down, came roaring back.

Celeste couldn't bear the pressure and jumped down from a bridge.

When that happened, Tobias was supposed to be over 600 miles away, helping corner a suspect. Yet, he was among the first to reach the scene.

He jumped off the bridge without hesitation and pulled Celeste to safety.

When Tobias climbed back onto the bridge with Celeste in his arms, his gaze was icy. I'd never seen anything like it.

His voice was laced with disappointment as he snapped, "Adeline Parker! You could have put an end to those rumors, but you stood by and did nothing.

"You even used your position to single out a student and drive her to take her own life. If people who make mistakes deserve to die, then what's the point of having laws at all?"

At the time, I was five months pregnant. I struggled to steady myself, then I explained, "I didn't do that! I only refused to address the rumors because—"

Before I could finish, Tobias shoved me hard, sending me crashing to the ground.

My abdomen struck the steps, and a sharp, unbearable pain shot through me. I struggled to get the words out.

"T-Tobias… my stomach hurts."

Yet he glanced down at me with contempt. "Adeline, Celeste's life is on the line. This isn't the time to let jealousy get the better of you."

But Tobias had no idea how I truly felt. After all, the living and the dead were separated by a gulf no one could cross. He couldn't see or hear me, and we couldn't communicate.Later, the court sentenced Glenn and Celeste. Their fingerprints on the plaster provided conclusive evidence against them. Celeste had tried to leverage her relationship with Tobias, but he'd refused to visit her even once. Guilt over what had happened to me weighed so heavily on him that he couldn't bear to see her. However, Celeste had used me to persuade Tobias to visit her. She promised to tell him what I'd said before I died, but only if he agreed to come. So, Tobias agreed to see her. The moment Celeste saw him, her eyes lit up. "Tobias, you came!" She played the victim and said, "Tobias, it's so cold in here. I miss you and our daughter. Can't you get me out of here?"Tobias had no intention of discussing anything else with Celeste. He stared coldly at her through the glass. "Celeste, I ca

For a long while, Tobias said nothing. He was stunned that Celeste had admitted it all without a flicker of shame. He'd never imagined that Celeste had killed me because she thought she was making the choice for him. Because Tobias hadn't pulled away from the kiss that day, Celeste had started hatching one plan after another. And he'd become part of her scheme, the final factor that had led to my death.Tobias' breathing grew ragged as he called the police right in front of Celeste. "Send someone to the hospital room on the third floor. Celeste White was Glenn Harris' accomplice."Celeste stared at him, incredulous. "Tobias Clark! Have you lost your mind?" She'd expected Tobias to take her side. She thought he'd help keep it under wraps, or at least delete anything that could link her to it, for the sake of their daughter and their family. What she hadn't expected was for him to go straight to the police and turn her in. Tobias looked at Celeste indifferently, and I sudden

Tobias remembered that I'd stopped responding to his messages after sending him the divorce papers. He'd assumed I wanted to cut him out of my life for good. After all, I'd been heartless enough to end my pregnancy when I was five months along. So when I stopped replying, he gave up on me completely. Later, Celeste started texting Tobias regularly. At first, he firmly turned her down. But gradually, he got used to having her around. By the time she graduated last year, the two of them were together. Tobias thought back on the past year. During every moment he'd been happy, I'd been buried in the plaster, unable to breathe. Something dark settled over him, yet he couldn't name it. All he felt was the weight on his chest.…Tobias had barely gotten into his car when a message from Celeste popped up. It read, "Tobias, the baby's crying. Do you think she's hungry? When are you coming back?"His expression darkened at once. Celeste was the reason Tobias and I had ended up like

In the next instant, Tobias struck Glenn so hard that he crashed to the ground. He kept punching the latter, each blow landing hard."How dare you!" Tobias roared. His voice was thick with barely restrained fury, and he'd lost all control. All he wanted was to tear Glenn apart with his bare hands. The other detectives rushed over and pulled them apart. Tobias struggled against the detectives restraining him, still trying to get at Glenn. "Why?" he shouted. "Why did you seal her inside that sculpture?"Glenn wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth, then said, "Why? I was just trying to help a student who'd been bullied!"Detective Clark, you were the one who publicly said Adeline had bullied Celeste. I couldn't just sit back and watch, so I helped her. That's all."Tobias was still seething. "You killed people over bullying? Glenn Harris, don't try to hide behind that excuse! Every one of those 17 people you killed was innocent!"Glenn's smile turned cold and sinister.

Tobias whipped around to look at the officer who had spoken. The man was standing before a sculpture. The rest of the team joined him, crowding in so tightly that Tobias couldn't make out the face. Unable to believe it, Tobias murmured, "How could this be? How could it be Adeline? She'd even signed for the divorce papers…"He moved stiffly toward the sculpture, still clinging to the last thread of hope. Maybe it was another victim. Tobias' pace slowed as a growing sense of dread threatened to overwhelm him. Just then, he heard one of the officers say, "Long hair. Plaster sculpture, approximately five feet three inches tall, and has a prominent baby bump. Most of the details match Detective Clark's deion. "Some parts sound hollow when tapped, while others sound dull. We've recovered fingerprints from the plaster. We're using X-rays to confirm…"As the officer listed his findings, Tobias' mind reeled. He stood there in a daze and stared at the sculpture. In the next instant

Just like that, Tobias scooped Celeste into his arms and carried her into the ambulance. I'd nearly lost our baby, yet he'd accused me of nothing more than jealousy. I stared at his retreating figure and felt something inside me die. Determined to clear my name, I tracked down whoever was spreading the rumors online. To my shock, Celeste herself had started them both times. She'd staged the whole thing to make herself look like a helpless victim of bullying. I sent Tobias the evidence, but his expression grew colder. "So, you're telling me she deliberately trashed her own reputation? "Adeline, even if you're trying to shift the blame, you don't get to turn around and accuse the victim."Behind him, Celeste gave me a faint, knowing smile. I understood at once. She had gotten exactly what she wanted. She'd driven a wedge between Tobias and me. Devastated, I took to social media and accused Celeste of having an affair with my husband. Tobias fired back with a scathing resp
