Chapter 4

مؤلف: Ferrycraft
Just like that, Tobias scooped Celeste into his arms and carried her into the ambulance.

I'd nearly lost our baby, yet he'd accused me of nothing more than jealousy. I stared at his retreating figure and felt something inside me die.

Determined to clear my name, I tracked down whoever was spreading the rumors online.

To my shock, Celeste herself had started them both times. She'd staged the whole thing to make herself look like a helpless victim of bullying.

I sent Tobias the evidence, but his expression grew colder. "So, you're telling me she deliberately trashed her own reputation?

"Adeline, even if you're trying to shift the blame, you don't get to turn around and accuse the victim."

Behind him, Celeste gave me a faint, knowing smile.

I understood at once. She had gotten exactly what she wanted. She'd driven a wedge between Tobias and me.

Devastated, I took to social media and accused Celeste of having an affair with my husband.

Tobias fired back with a scathing response. "Just because I carried her to safety? Adeline, you targeted a student because of me, deliberately gave her lower grades, cost her a shot at a scholarship, and drove her to the point of attempting suicide.

"I rushed back from over 600 miles away to clean up your mess, and you think I was flirting with her just because I saved her life? Does my whole world have to revolve around you?"

Once they read his comment, people online pieced together what had happened and started tearing into me.

One wrote, "Seriously? He was saving someone's life, and you call that cheating? By that logic, doctors would be cheating every time they treated a patient of the opposite sex."

"How gross! She seriously thinks everything between a man and a woman has to be sexual."

Another comment read, "She bullied a student over something she made up in her head? Someone like that has no business teaching. Get her out of that school!"

I stared at the flood of hateful comments, then I collapsed.

I was rushed to the hospital, where the doctors gave me treatment to help support the pregnancy. The doctors said the baby was still at risk and warned me that further emotional stress could increase the risk of a miscarriage.

Tobias and I had been together for eight years. When he found out I was pregnant, he had even gotten certified in newborn care and early childhood development, all to prepare for our baby.

And now, both times I'd nearly lost the baby, he'd been the one responsible.

A bitter smile tugged at my lips. If that was how things stood, then it was time to get a divorce. So, I asked him out to discuss the terms of the divorce.

But just as I was about to head out, Celeste took Tobias' phone and texted me a new address. It was my sculpture studio.

…

The police cruiser passed the last traffic light and pulled up at their destination. Then, the officers got out one by one.

Tobias pulled out his phone and opened our chat. We hadn't been in touch for so long that our conversation had dropped to the bottom of his message list.

But when he opened the chat, I stared at the screen, stunned by how many messages there were.

"Adeline, what did you want to talk to me about?"

"Did you get an abortion? Are you really going to divorce me? Just because I carried Celeste? Is it really that big a deal?"

"Adeline, I acted on impulse earlier. I've already deleted my reply. I don't want a divorce. Let's talk this through."

But I'd never replied to any of them.

Tobias took a deep breath and pushed open the studio door, his expression grave.

Dust, mildew, and a strange chemical smell billowed out. Frowning, he stepped inside and saw countless plaster sculptures throughout the studio.

Then he gave the team a deion of my appearance. "The suspected victim had long hair, no bangs, and was about five-foot-three. She was pregnant, with a very prominent baby bump."

Following the deion, the officers carefully made their way between the sculptures, searching for me. But even after a lengthy search, they couldn't find anyone who matched it.

Tobias looked displeased, though he was unconsciously beginning to relax.

He gave a dismissive snort. He'd actually believed the nonsense a drug addict had fed him. Besides, I owned the studio.

Tobias turned to his team and ordered, "Alright, everyone, let's clear—"

But an urgent voice cut him off. "Detective Clark, we've found a sculpture that matches the deion!"

But Tobias had no idea how I truly felt. After all, the living and the dead were separated by a gulf no one could cross. He couldn't see or hear me, and we couldn't communicate.Later, the court sentenced Glenn and Celeste. Their fingerprints on the plaster provided conclusive evidence against them. Celeste had tried to leverage her relationship with Tobias, but he'd refused to visit her even once. Guilt over what had happened to me weighed so heavily on him that he couldn't bear to see her. However, Celeste had used me to persuade Tobias to visit her. She promised to tell him what I'd said before I died, but only if he agreed to come. So, Tobias agreed to see her. The moment Celeste saw him, her eyes lit up. "Tobias, you came!" She played the victim and said, "Tobias, it's so cold in here. I miss you and our daughter. Can't you get me out of here?"Tobias had no intention of discussing anything else with Celeste. He stared coldly at her through the glass. "Celeste, I ca

For a long while, Tobias said nothing. He was stunned that Celeste had admitted it all without a flicker of shame. He'd never imagined that Celeste had killed me because she thought she was making the choice for him. Because Tobias hadn't pulled away from the kiss that day, Celeste had started hatching one plan after another. And he'd become part of her scheme, the final factor that had led to my death.Tobias' breathing grew ragged as he called the police right in front of Celeste. "Send someone to the hospital room on the third floor. Celeste White was Glenn Harris' accomplice."Celeste stared at him, incredulous. "Tobias Clark! Have you lost your mind?" She'd expected Tobias to take her side. She thought he'd help keep it under wraps, or at least delete anything that could link her to it, for the sake of their daughter and their family. What she hadn't expected was for him to go straight to the police and turn her in. Tobias looked at Celeste indifferently, and I sudden

Tobias remembered that I'd stopped responding to his messages after sending him the divorce papers. He'd assumed I wanted to cut him out of my life for good. After all, I'd been heartless enough to end my pregnancy when I was five months along. So when I stopped replying, he gave up on me completely. Later, Celeste started texting Tobias regularly. At first, he firmly turned her down. But gradually, he got used to having her around. By the time she graduated last year, the two of them were together. Tobias thought back on the past year. During every moment he'd been happy, I'd been buried in the plaster, unable to breathe. Something dark settled over him, yet he couldn't name it. All he felt was the weight on his chest.…Tobias had barely gotten into his car when a message from Celeste popped up. It read, "Tobias, the baby's crying. Do you think she's hungry? When are you coming back?"His expression darkened at once. Celeste was the reason Tobias and I had ended up like

In the next instant, Tobias struck Glenn so hard that he crashed to the ground. He kept punching the latter, each blow landing hard."How dare you!" Tobias roared. His voice was thick with barely restrained fury, and he'd lost all control. All he wanted was to tear Glenn apart with his bare hands. The other detectives rushed over and pulled them apart. Tobias struggled against the detectives restraining him, still trying to get at Glenn. "Why?" he shouted. "Why did you seal her inside that sculpture?"Glenn wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth, then said, "Why? I was just trying to help a student who'd been bullied!"Detective Clark, you were the one who publicly said Adeline had bullied Celeste. I couldn't just sit back and watch, so I helped her. That's all."Tobias was still seething. "You killed people over bullying? Glenn Harris, don't try to hide behind that excuse! Every one of those 17 people you killed was innocent!"Glenn's smile turned cold and sinister.

Tobias whipped around to look at the officer who had spoken. The man was standing before a sculpture. The rest of the team joined him, crowding in so tightly that Tobias couldn't make out the face. Unable to believe it, Tobias murmured, "How could this be? How could it be Adeline? She'd even signed for the divorce papers…"He moved stiffly toward the sculpture, still clinging to the last thread of hope. Maybe it was another victim. Tobias' pace slowed as a growing sense of dread threatened to overwhelm him. Just then, he heard one of the officers say, "Long hair. Plaster sculpture, approximately five feet three inches tall, and has a prominent baby bump. Most of the details match Detective Clark's deion. "Some parts sound hollow when tapped, while others sound dull. We've recovered fingerprints from the plaster. We're using X-rays to confirm…"As the officer listed his findings, Tobias' mind reeled. He stood there in a daze and stared at the sculpture. In the next instant
