Lysander's POV

"Sit," she said.

I sat.

"Now tell me what's really bothering you. Not what Seraphina said. What you think."

I dragged a hand through my hair. "I don't know what I think anymore.

" She picked a dead leaf off one of the roses, rolling it between her fingers. "Someone plants a small, reasonable-sounding doubt, and you spend all your energy chasing it instead of asking the obvious question."

"Which is?"

"Why does Seraphina care so much about talking you out of finding the truth?"

Nerissa's POVThe boardroom felt colder than usual, eleven people around the table who'd spent the last month reading about my life in the news instead of hearing about it from me directly."Shareholder confidence took a hit," the CFO said, sliding a report across the table. "Not catastrophic. But real. People don't love finding out their CEO's personal history reads like a thriller novel.""My personal history isn't the company's business.""It became the company's business the second it hit the front page, Ms. Vane. That's not a judgment. That's just how markets work." He said it gently, not unkindly, which somehow made it harder to argue with. "We need something that reminds people what Vane Holdings actually is. Stability. A hundred years of it, as of this quarter."I sat back, already seeing where this was heading."The Centennial.""The Centennial." He nodded. "It was already planned as a major event. Given everything, I'd argue it's become something closer to necessary. A publi

Lysander's POVDesmond dropped the envelope on my desk without much ceremony."Divorce filing," he said. "Seraphina's lawyer sent it over this morning. Straightforward, no contest on anything, no requests beyond the dissolution itself."I stared at it a moment before picking it up, strange how heavy a few pages of paper could feel after everything else that had happened this year."That's it? No fight over anything?""Nothing. She's not asking for a cent, not even the car still registered in both your names. Her lawyer said she wants this finished clean. Her words, apparently."I read through it slowly, the clinical language of lawyers reducing five years of my life down to a handful of paragraphs. Grounds. Irreconcilable differences. A marriage that had never been real, finally ending in exactly the plain, bureaucratic way real marriages sometimes did."Sign it," I said. "Today, if we can manage it.""No hesitation at all?""What would I be hesitating over, Desmond? A marriage that w

Seraphina's POVThe prosecutor's office set up a proper room for it this time, not the cramped visitation space I'd gotten used to. Real chairs. A table big enough for all the paperwork Rousseau's team had apparently decided this conversation warranted."Take your time," the prosecutor said, recorder running. "Start wherever makes sense to you."So I did. All of it, finally, with nothing left to protect. The accounts. The routing numbers I'd memorized out of necessity years ago. The names of men who'd delivered Rousset's messages over the years, the properties, the dates, every piece I'd quietly gathered in a storage unit while pretending to be nothing more than a frightened, pregnant wife."You kept all of this," the prosecutor said, flipping through a printed copy of my own records, "for five years, without ever using it.""I was waiting for a moment I could survive using it." I folded my hands on the table, steady now in a way I hadn't expected to feel going into this. "That moment

Lysander's POVWe ended up at my place, mostly because neither of us said anything else once we got in the car, and it was closer. The house felt too quiet when we walked in, the kind of quiet that had settled into every room since Seraphina left and never fully lifted since. Nerissa stood in the entryway a moment, taking it in, like she was seeing the shape of my life now for the first time instead of just hearing about it secondhand."You want tea," I asked, mostly because I needed something to do with my hands."Sure."We sat in the kitchen while the kettle heated, not saying much, the weight of the morning still sitting heavy between us."Seven years," I said again, like saying it a third time might finally make it feel real instead of just loud."It's a number. Numbers don't actually tell you how it's going to feel to live through them." Nerissa wrapped both hands around her mug once I'd set it in front of her. "I used to think five years was an impossible amount of time to carry

Lysander's POVMy mother held my hand through the whole thing, her grip so tight I lost feeling in two fingers somewhere around the halfway mark.Talia sat up straight at the defense table, hair pulled back, the same careful composure she'd worn through the entire trial months ago. I wondered if she practiced it in the mirror of her cell, or if it had just become the only face she knew how to make anymore. The judge spoke for a long time before she got to the actual number. Aggravating factors, mitigating factors, a careful, methodical breakdown of everything that had led to this specific moment."Taking into account the defendant's lack of prior record, her cooperation following conviction, and the court's assessment of genuine remorse," the judge said, "I sentence the defendant to seven years, with the possibility of parole after four, conditional on continued good behavior and completion of all court-ordered programs."Seven years. My mother made a small, broken sound beside me, qu

Nerissa's POVPriya called before I'd even finished my coffee the next morning."It's out," she said. "All of it.""All of what.""The arrest. His name, the yacht, the sabotage theory, all of it. Someone in the prosecutor's office must have talked, or a court filing got leaked, because every major outlet has some version of the story by seven a.m."I grabbed my laptop, hands not quite steady, and pulled up the first headline that loaded.*BILLIONAIRE HEIRESS'S FIVE-YEAR-OLD YACHT 'ACCIDENT' WAS ATTEMPTED MURDER, SOURCES SAY.*My stomach turned over slow, reading it, seeing five years of my own private nightmare laid out in bold print for anyone with an internet connection to read over breakfast.Lucien read over my shoulder, jaw tightening with every paragraph."They're already speculating about the rest of it," he said. "The marriage. Lysander. The twins.""Of course they are." I scrolled further, every outlet circling the same questions I'd spent five years trying to keep buried. "T
