Chapter 1

I looked at my boyfriend, Shane Yardley, in disbelief.

I was still frozen in shock when Shane seized my wrist and dragged me to a blind spot away from the hallway cameras.

He stood with his back to the light, his face terrifyingly grim. "What are you doing here? Who told you to come here, Jasmine?"

Shane seemed like a complete stranger to me. He had never spoken so harshly to me before this.

I stared at his furious face, feeling a lump in my throat. I choked out a sob as I demanded, "Is it because of that woman? You've been cheating on me. How long has this been going on, Shane?"

Shane ignored my question and just looked over his shoulder at the pregnant woman waiting in the hotel lobby, looking in our direction with a puzzled expression.

He immediately turned back and warned me in a hushed voice, "It isn't what you think, so head home first. I'll explain everything to you once I return tonight, Jasmine."

He didn't even dare look at me again after saying that, as if he were worried that the pregnant woman would catch on. He hurriedly motioned to his chauffeur, signaling him to take me away.

I looked in the rearview mirror just as the car pulled away from the hotel and saw Shane standing beside the pregnant woman again. He gently wrapped his arm around her shoulders as he leaned in to say something in her ear. She was beaming while he held her hand tenderly.

I lowered my head, staring at the bruises left on my wrist from Shane's tight grip earlier.

I instantly understood everything. I understood why, after five years together, Shane always said he was against marriage and why he refused to hold a wedding for me. I realized now why he had never seemed bothered by the fact that I couldn't have children.

It turned out that he had someone else in his heart the entire time. I slumped against the back seat, shaking uncontrollably as I cried.

It wasn't until the car pulled up outside the house that I got out, still unsteady on my feet. I wiped my tears away and immediately began packing my things.

I ran into Shane returning home just as I was carrying my suitcase downstairs late that night. He took one look at my puffy eyes and let out a weary sigh.

He reached over to take my suitcase and explained, "Emma Youngblood is the heiress of Youngblood Group, so me being with her is a strategic move for my company, Jasmine.

"You can't even have children, and now that I'm getting up there in years, I want a child of my own too. Why can't you just turn a blind eye? We can keep living the way we always have, can't we, Jasmine?"

I recoiled from Shane's touch. "Those aren't valid reasons to cheat on me. We should just break up, Shane."

Everything fell silent for a moment.

Shane let out a couple of dry, scornful laughs before turning his gaze on me. "You want to break up with me? What makes you think you can break up with me? Do you think anyone else would treasure an infertile older woman the way I do? You're not that young anymore, so stop being so naive, Jasmine.

"I can give you everything—money, houses, and cars—except for a marriage certificate. Isn't it better to just turn a blind eye and stay by my side, Jasmine?"

I looked up at Shane, my heart aching terribly. I felt like I was truly seeing him for who he was for the very first time. I noticed the contempt in his eyes and realized that the man I loved had been looking down on me all along.

…

I lay in the hotel bed as memories from the past five years raced through my mind.

I couldn't even get a wink of sleep, so I got up and instinctively looked at myself in the mirror.

I was already 32 years old. I was no longer as slim as I used to be, and fine wrinkles had started appearing at the corners of my eyes. I had an average education level, my abilities were ordinary, and on top of that, I couldn't have children.

I really wasn't young anymore, and perhaps I didn't deserve to be treated well. I lowered my hand helplessly, my resolve wavering. I even thought I should return to Shane's side. I could pretend I knew nothing, keep living the life of a kept woman, and spend the rest of my life playing dumb.

It sounded much better that way, but I couldn't bring myself to live like that.

I tossed and turned, staying awake the entire night.

I had just gotten downstairs the following morning when the front desk receptionist approached me and said, "Mr. Yardley stopped by not long after you came in last night, Ms. Quinton.

"He mentioned that he was your husband and was concerned you might not be comfortable with your stay, so he upgraded your room to the presidential suite and extended your stay by a month.

"Please enjoy your stay and let us know if you need anything. Mr. Yardley has also asked us to pass this note to you, Ms. Quinton."

"I'll be waiting for you at home. I love you, Jasmine." I stared at the familiar handwriting on the note, my heart filling with an unbearable ache.

I was on the verge of giving in, of talking myself into going back to Shane, when a woman's voice sounded behind me, "You're Jasmine Quinton, right? I'm Emma Youngblood."

I picked up the child with ease and nuzzled her soft, round cheek. I noticed the shock and disbelief in Shane's eyes, so I took the initiative to introduce him to the child in my arms. "This is Dahlia Lister, my daughter."Just then, a tall, broad-shouldered man strolled up to my side. He naturally reached out and slipped his arm around my waist, pulling me close to him. Frank Lister, my husband, offered me an apologetic smile and said, "I'm so sorry. I had an emergency at the hospital that dragged my trip out way longer than planned. I just got back and happened to make it in time to pick Dahlia up from kindergarten."Frank shifted his attention to Shane. "And who's this?"I replied, "This is Shane Yardley."Frank nodded and extended a hand toward him. "Hello. I'm Frank Lister, Jasmine's husband."Shane looked at Frank, then turned to me in sheer disbelief. "Y-You're married, Jasmine?"I replied calmly, "Yes, I am. I'd really appreciate it if you stopped showing up and botheri

I went into the kitchen after saying that, and by the time I came back out, Shane had already left.Emma learned about it the following day. She walked into the diner in her heels and settled into her usual seat. She then called out loudly, "Give me one bowl of beef stew with extra beef! And don't expect me to pay for it, Jasmine!"I was at the register working on the accounts when I heard that and looked up at her. I couldn't help but laugh after seeing how casually she demanded her free meal, a smile spreading across my face. "I'll have it out in a minute! I'll even make it myself!"I watched Emma eat like she hadn't had a decent meal in days and laughed. "How come you always eat like you haven't eaten in days whenever you come here? I heard the Youngblood family's chefs are all Michelin-star hires. Do they not feed you at home, Emma?"Emma looked up and rolled her eyes, her cheeks bulging as she chewed her food. "You have no idea what I've been dealing with! I've been going he

Shane was eventually sentenced to six years and three months in prison.Emma couldn't be there on the day of the trial. She had suddenly gone into labor the night before last and given birth to a big, healthy boy, so she was still recuperating at a postpartum care facility.I sat quietly in the gallery, watching as the presiding judge brought the gavel down heavily, sealing Shane's fate with a single strike.Shane fixed his gaze on me from the defense table, refusing to look away. His eyes held a mixture of guilt, remorse, defiance, and profound bewilderment.I had long since stopped caring, though. I looked at him for only a moment once the lengthy trial was finally over before turning my gaze away. I then turned around without hesitation and never looked back at him again.I walked out of the courthouse, greeted by the warm sunlight.I used a small fraction of the money Emma gave me to open a small diner. I had fallen way out of touch with the real world after spending years ca

"Why did you string me along for five years? Why did you tamper with my medication and ruin me, Shane?" I stared intently into Shane's evasive gaze, my voice trembling slightly with emotion."If you didn't love me, you could have just broken up with me. Why claim to love me while hurting me? Why exploit my feelings while taking advantage of Emma's family status at the same time, Shane?"It's because you never loved me or Emma—you only love yourself! You knew how badly I wanted kids! Why would you tamper with my medications, Shane?"Shane kept his head lowered, his voice muffled as he replied, "I just wasn't ready to marry you at the time. I was worried that if you got pregnant, you'd push even harder for marriage. I was desperate to climb the corporate ladder, which means I needed a marriage that could help me get there… "You, of all people, should get where I was coming from, Jasmine. I—""I'm not obligated to get where you're coming from, Shane," I said, coldly cutting Shane of

Shane was totally dumbfounded. He stared at me, completely at a loss for words.I looked at his stunned expression and chuckled softly, my eyes brimming with cold indifference. "You didn't see this coming, did you? You actually thought a useless kept woman like me would spend five years being fooled by you, then willingly remain your mistress and your emotional punching bag, huh?"You're probably wondering how I ended up working with someone else to put you behind bars, right? I'm a human too. You had no right to treat me this way, Shane."Shane widened his eyes in disbelief as he muttered under his breath, "W-Why would you, Jasmine? T-That can't be true!"Yet, before Shane could even process what was happening, the police officers moved in and hauled him right out of his seat, his handcuffs cinching tight as he was led out of the conference room.Shane couldn't take his eyes off me, even while being taken away, as if he still couldn't accept what had happened. His gaze remained u

  • Chasing a Marriage That Never Existed   Chapter 4

Yardley Group and Youngblood Group had become deeply entangled ever since Shane registered his marriage to Emma.He was hoping to use this chance to slowly take over Youngblood Group. He never expected Samuel Youngblood, Emma's father, to quietly sideline him under the pretext of "spending time with his pregnant daughter". He wasn't rarely allowed to attend the shareholders' meetings lately.Shane's temper grew increasingly foul recently, especially with all that resentment pent up inside him. That night, he smashed his third cup in the study, leaving broken porcelain and coffee all over the floor. He yelled at his assistant on the other end of the phone, "What do you mean by 'Mr. Youngblood's instructions'? You're the people I brought over from Yardley Group. Do you work for me or for Samuel? "Get your heads straight! Emma is pregnant with my child, which means Youngblood Group will be mine soo
