Chapter 2

Autor: Bowl of Rice
Emma and I took our seats in a private room at the cafe.

I couldn't help but look closely at her. I noticed that she had dark circles under her eyes, and her eyes were slightly puffy—she clearly hadn't slept a wink all night either.

Yet, putting her tired look aside, she was undeniably young and gorgeous, practically glowing with youth. She didn't look heavy at all, even with her subtle baby bump, exuding a gentle maternal warmth instead.

It was no wonder Shane had cheated on me.

Emma didn't seem bothered by the fact that I was just staring at her. She gently stirred the coffee in front of her before speaking up. "I'll get straight to the point. I know you're not Shane's cousin. You're his girlfriend. You've been together for five years, right?"

I nodded, making no attempt to deny it. I then moved the coffee away from her and passed her a glass of warm water instead. "You're pregnant, so you should avoid drinking coffee. You should have some water instead. Did you and Shane register your marriage?"

Emma froze for a second, apparently caught off guard by my gentle attitude. She then replied gently, "Yes, Shane and I got our marriage certificate last month.

"Your reaction yesterday seemed strange, so I had someone check into you, which was how I discovered your real identity. I guess you probably didn't know my existence either, huh?"

I hummed in response before letting out a bitter, self-deprecating chuckle. "I guess that makes me the homewrecker. You can rest assured that I won't hold on to Shane, though. I'll move away from the city once I find a job."

Emma looked at me, seeming genuinely surprised. "I thought you'd be like the women my father kept around.

"I really thought you'd make a huge fuss, demand that I divorce Shane and give up my place as his wife, and then spout some nonsense about how 'I'm the one he loves most.' I didn't expect you to be this calm."

I hesitated for a moment, took a sip of coffee, and said, "I'm not an idiot. In the past five years, every time I asked Shane about getting married, he either changed the subject or said he had something urgent to deal with.

"I had a feeling that something was wrong back then, but I just couldn't bring myself to face it. I suppose I can't do that anymore—not with you sitting here, carrying his child."

I stood up to leave after saying that, then stopped as if something crossed my mind. I grabbed the umbrella from my bag and laid it on the table.

"You can have this, since it's going to rain soon. You should avoid getting caught in the rain, especially since you're pregnant. You'd better head home early. If you're still worried about what's going to happen, I'll leave tomorrow."

Just as I was about to walk out, Emma suddenly called out to me, "Hold on!"

I turned back to look at her.

"Do you want to get revenge on Shane?" Emma asked, supporting her lower back as she stood up. She chuckled softly to herself before I could say anything. "I know I do."

Emma asked me to wait in the restroom for a while before calling Shane and telling him to come over.

She slapped Shane right across the face the moment he walked through the door and burst into tearful rage. "I know what's going on between you and Jasmine! She's not your cousin! You lied to me! I want a divorce, Shane!"

Shane let out a muffled groan, his cheek instantly swelling from the slap. He barely had time to react before pulling Emma into his arms and soothing her. "Please hear me out, Emma!

"I ended things with Jasmine the day I met you three months ago. She was the one who refused to let go, even finding the hotel we were staying at. You're the only one in my heart, Emma."

Emma wouldn't hear a word of it, continuing her outburst. "You've been with her for five years! How could you suddenly stop loving her overnight? What happens if she turns up pregnant later and won't let you go?

"I don't care what you say! I'm going to tell my father! I'm going to get a divorce, Shane!"

Having said that, Emma held her baby bump and made a break for the exit.

Shane grew frantic and blurted out, "Jasmine won't be able to get pregnant since I've switched her medication! She has taken them for so long her body is already wrecked!"

I picked up the child with ease and nuzzled her soft, round cheek. I noticed the shock and disbelief in Shane's eyes, so I took the initiative to introduce him to the child in my arms. "This is Dahlia Lister, my daughter."Just then, a tall, broad-shouldered man strolled up to my side. He naturally reached out and slipped his arm around my waist, pulling me close to him. Frank Lister, my husband, offered me an apologetic smile and said, "I'm so sorry. I had an emergency at the hospital that dragged my trip out way longer than planned. I just got back and happened to make it in time to pick Dahlia up from kindergarten."Frank shifted his attention to Shane. "And who's this?"I replied, "This is Shane Yardley."Frank nodded and extended a hand toward him. "Hello. I'm Frank Lister, Jasmine's husband."Shane looked at Frank, then turned to me in sheer disbelief. "Y-You're married, Jasmine?"I replied calmly, "Yes, I am. I'd really appreciate it if you stopped showing up and botheri

I went into the kitchen after saying that, and by the time I came back out, Shane had already left.Emma learned about it the following day. She walked into the diner in her heels and settled into her usual seat. She then called out loudly, "Give me one bowl of beef stew with extra beef! And don't expect me to pay for it, Jasmine!"I was at the register working on the accounts when I heard that and looked up at her. I couldn't help but laugh after seeing how casually she demanded her free meal, a smile spreading across my face. "I'll have it out in a minute! I'll even make it myself!"I watched Emma eat like she hadn't had a decent meal in days and laughed. "How come you always eat like you haven't eaten in days whenever you come here? I heard the Youngblood family's chefs are all Michelin-star hires. Do they not feed you at home, Emma?"Emma looked up and rolled her eyes, her cheeks bulging as she chewed her food. "You have no idea what I've been dealing with! I've been going he

Shane was eventually sentenced to six years and three months in prison.Emma couldn't be there on the day of the trial. She had suddenly gone into labor the night before last and given birth to a big, healthy boy, so she was still recuperating at a postpartum care facility.I sat quietly in the gallery, watching as the presiding judge brought the gavel down heavily, sealing Shane's fate with a single strike.Shane fixed his gaze on me from the defense table, refusing to look away. His eyes held a mixture of guilt, remorse, defiance, and profound bewilderment.I had long since stopped caring, though. I looked at him for only a moment once the lengthy trial was finally over before turning my gaze away. I then turned around without hesitation and never looked back at him again.I walked out of the courthouse, greeted by the warm sunlight.I used a small fraction of the money Emma gave me to open a small diner. I had fallen way out of touch with the real world after spending years ca

"Why did you string me along for five years? Why did you tamper with my medication and ruin me, Shane?" I stared intently into Shane's evasive gaze, my voice trembling slightly with emotion."If you didn't love me, you could have just broken up with me. Why claim to love me while hurting me? Why exploit my feelings while taking advantage of Emma's family status at the same time, Shane?"It's because you never loved me or Emma—you only love yourself! You knew how badly I wanted kids! Why would you tamper with my medications, Shane?"Shane kept his head lowered, his voice muffled as he replied, "I just wasn't ready to marry you at the time. I was worried that if you got pregnant, you'd push even harder for marriage. I was desperate to climb the corporate ladder, which means I needed a marriage that could help me get there… "You, of all people, should get where I was coming from, Jasmine. I—""I'm not obligated to get where you're coming from, Shane," I said, coldly cutting Shane of

Shane was totally dumbfounded. He stared at me, completely at a loss for words.I looked at his stunned expression and chuckled softly, my eyes brimming with cold indifference. "You didn't see this coming, did you? You actually thought a useless kept woman like me would spend five years being fooled by you, then willingly remain your mistress and your emotional punching bag, huh?"You're probably wondering how I ended up working with someone else to put you behind bars, right? I'm a human too. You had no right to treat me this way, Shane."Shane widened his eyes in disbelief as he muttered under his breath, "W-Why would you, Jasmine? T-That can't be true!"Yet, before Shane could even process what was happening, the police officers moved in and hauled him right out of his seat, his handcuffs cinching tight as he was led out of the conference room.Shane couldn't take his eyes off me, even while being taken away, as if he still couldn't accept what had happened. His gaze remained u

  • Chasing a Marriage That Never Existed   Chapter 4

Shane's so-called love life was going smoothly, while his career was going downhill. Yardley Group and Youngblood Group had become deeply entangled ever since Shane registered his marriage to Emma.He was hoping to use this chance to slowly take over Youngblood Group. He never expected Samuel Youngblood, Emma's father, to quietly sideline him under the pretext of "spending time with his pregnant daughter". He wasn't rarely allowed to attend the shareholders' meetings lately.Shane's temper grew increasingly foul recently, especially with all that resentment pent up inside him. That night, he smashed his third cup in the study, leaving broken porcelain and coffee all over the floor. He yelled at his assistant on the other end of the phone, "What do you mean by 'Mr. Youngblood's instructions'? You're the people I brought over from Yardley Group. Do you work for me or for Samuel? "Get your heads straight! Emma is pregnant with my child, which means Youngblood Group will be mine soo
