Chapter 3

Autor: Bowl of Rice
Emma froze for a moment and instinctively asked, "What do you mean by that, Shane?"

Shane was breathing heavily. He realized that he couldn't hide it any longer, so he just laid it all out. "You have to believe me, Emma!

"I was just fooling around with Jasmine back then. I swapped out her fertility pills a long time ago to prevent her from getting pregnant. I mean, she's been taking them for years now, so even if she gets herself checked out at the hospital, they wouldn't be able to find anything. She couldn't possibly conceive!

"You can rest assured that I'll only love you and our future child, Emma!"

Emma fell silent and briefly glanced over at the restroom where I was hiding. She then turned to Shane and softened her demeanor, saying, "I'll believe you for now, then. I'm hungry, so come get something to eat with me, Shane."

It wasn't long before the sound of their footsteps drifted away.

I leaned against the restroom wall, my entire body going numb as it shook uncontrollably. I could barely believe what I had just heard. I still held onto a sliver of hope as I made my way to the pharmacy and handed the bottle of fertility pills I usually took to the pharmacist.

Upon receiving the bottle, the pharmacist poured out a pill, inspected it closely for a moment, and looked up at me with a strange expression.

"These are levonorgestrel pills, which are used for contraception. I've also noticed the dosage written on the bottle. Is it possible that someone deliberately swapped out your fertility pills?"

I managed a faint smile at the pharmacist, too exhausted to even thank her. I walked out of the pharmacy in a daze and stood in the middle of the busy street, suddenly feeling that these past five years with Shane had been nothing but a cruel joke.

Just then, thunder rumbled overhead, and heavy rain came pouring down all at once.

I had no umbrella, so I just trudged through the rain by myself. I didn't want to go home—not that I had a home to go back to anyway.

Passersby ran by, trying to get out of the rain, and one of them slammed into my shoulder. They didn't even apologize. They just glanced back at me and vanished into the rain.

I went weak in the knees and collapsed into the cold rainwater, too exhausted to get back on my feet. I covered my face and cried uncontrollably; the rainwater blended with my tears and seeped into my mouth, tasting salty and bitter.

It was a long while before I finally raised my head again. I spotted a familiar umbrella held over me—the one I had given Emma earlier. I then looked at the bodyguard in the black suit holding it over my head.

Just then, the window of the luxury car parked alongside rolled down slowly. Emma looked out at me and said, "You can quit crying now. You could cry your eyes out, and that scumbag Shane wouldn't give a damn. Get in the car, Jasmine."

I was helped into the car by the bodyguard, and since the car's heater was blasting, it wasn't long before my freezing hands and feet warmed up.

Emma threw me a pair of dry towels and waited until I finished wiping down before speaking. "I'm going to ask you one last time. Do you want to get back at Shane, Jasmine?"

I looked at Emma, and when our eyes met, I saw my reflection in her eyes. "I do."

…

That night, I dragged my suitcase and returned to Shane's side.

Shane didn't seem surprised by my return. He smiled smugly and pulled me into his arms. "It's tough being out there by yourself, isn't it? Isn't it better to just stay by my side? I'll provide for you for the rest of your life, Jasmine."

I smiled faintly and wrapped my arms around Shane. "I'll stay with you for the rest of your life, Shane."

Having said that, Shane turned his swollen cheek toward me and said aggrievedly, "Emma even slapped me today because of you, Jasmine."

"Your cheek is completely swollen," I said as I furrowed my brows, pulling him down to sit while looking completely heartbroken.

I then took out the first-aid kit and grabbed a cotton swab to apply some medicine to it. "I'll put some medicine on it, so hurry up and close your eyes. You wouldn't want it to get in your eyes, right? Emma really went too far. How could she hit you so hard, Shane?"

It was too bad that Emma didn't hit him harder.

Shane closed his eyes, grabbed my hand, and casually tossed out another sweet line. "It's alright. If it earns me your concern, then I'd say the slap was worth it, Jasmine."

I offered a bashful smile and gently applied the medication to his cheek.

It was a shame Shane had his eyes closed. He couldn't see that my face had already lost every trace of love I once had for him, leaving nothing but cold indifference.

"Don't say that.

"Shane, I really love you."

I picked up the child with ease and nuzzled her soft, round cheek. I noticed the shock and disbelief in Shane's eyes, so I took the initiative to introduce him to the child in my arms. "This is Dahlia Lister, my daughter."Just then, a tall, broad-shouldered man strolled up to my side. He naturally reached out and slipped his arm around my waist, pulling me close to him. Frank Lister, my husband, offered me an apologetic smile and said, "I'm so sorry. I had an emergency at the hospital that dragged my trip out way longer than planned. I just got back and happened to make it in time to pick Dahlia up from kindergarten."Frank shifted his attention to Shane. "And who's this?"I replied, "This is Shane Yardley."Frank nodded and extended a hand toward him. "Hello. I'm Frank Lister, Jasmine's husband."Shane looked at Frank, then turned to me in sheer disbelief. "Y-You're married, Jasmine?"I replied calmly, "Yes, I am. I'd really appreciate it if you stopped showing up and botheri

I went into the kitchen after saying that, and by the time I came back out, Shane had already left.Emma learned about it the following day. She walked into the diner in her heels and settled into her usual seat. She then called out loudly, "Give me one bowl of beef stew with extra beef! And don't expect me to pay for it, Jasmine!"I was at the register working on the accounts when I heard that and looked up at her. I couldn't help but laugh after seeing how casually she demanded her free meal, a smile spreading across my face. "I'll have it out in a minute! I'll even make it myself!"I watched Emma eat like she hadn't had a decent meal in days and laughed. "How come you always eat like you haven't eaten in days whenever you come here? I heard the Youngblood family's chefs are all Michelin-star hires. Do they not feed you at home, Emma?"Emma looked up and rolled her eyes, her cheeks bulging as she chewed her food. "You have no idea what I've been dealing with! I've been going he

Shane was eventually sentenced to six years and three months in prison.Emma couldn't be there on the day of the trial. She had suddenly gone into labor the night before last and given birth to a big, healthy boy, so she was still recuperating at a postpartum care facility.I sat quietly in the gallery, watching as the presiding judge brought the gavel down heavily, sealing Shane's fate with a single strike.Shane fixed his gaze on me from the defense table, refusing to look away. His eyes held a mixture of guilt, remorse, defiance, and profound bewilderment.I had long since stopped caring, though. I looked at him for only a moment once the lengthy trial was finally over before turning my gaze away. I then turned around without hesitation and never looked back at him again.I walked out of the courthouse, greeted by the warm sunlight.I used a small fraction of the money Emma gave me to open a small diner. I had fallen way out of touch with the real world after spending years ca

"Why did you string me along for five years? Why did you tamper with my medication and ruin me, Shane?" I stared intently into Shane's evasive gaze, my voice trembling slightly with emotion."If you didn't love me, you could have just broken up with me. Why claim to love me while hurting me? Why exploit my feelings while taking advantage of Emma's family status at the same time, Shane?"It's because you never loved me or Emma—you only love yourself! You knew how badly I wanted kids! Why would you tamper with my medications, Shane?"Shane kept his head lowered, his voice muffled as he replied, "I just wasn't ready to marry you at the time. I was worried that if you got pregnant, you'd push even harder for marriage. I was desperate to climb the corporate ladder, which means I needed a marriage that could help me get there… "You, of all people, should get where I was coming from, Jasmine. I—""I'm not obligated to get where you're coming from, Shane," I said, coldly cutting Shane of

Shane was totally dumbfounded. He stared at me, completely at a loss for words.I looked at his stunned expression and chuckled softly, my eyes brimming with cold indifference. "You didn't see this coming, did you? You actually thought a useless kept woman like me would spend five years being fooled by you, then willingly remain your mistress and your emotional punching bag, huh?"You're probably wondering how I ended up working with someone else to put you behind bars, right? I'm a human too. You had no right to treat me this way, Shane."Shane widened his eyes in disbelief as he muttered under his breath, "W-Why would you, Jasmine? T-That can't be true!"Yet, before Shane could even process what was happening, the police officers moved in and hauled him right out of his seat, his handcuffs cinching tight as he was led out of the conference room.Shane couldn't take his eyes off me, even while being taken away, as if he still couldn't accept what had happened. His gaze remained u

Yardley Group and Youngblood Group had become deeply entangled ever since Shane registered his marriage to Emma.He was hoping to use this chance to slowly take over Youngblood Group. He wasn't rarely allowed to attend the shareholders' meetings lately.Shane's temper grew increasingly foul recently, especially with all that resentment pent up inside him. That night, he smashed his third cup in the study, leaving broken porcelain and coffee all over the floor.
