FIVE YEARS LATER
KIARA’S POV The warm rays of morning sunlight fell on me through the kitchen window. I looked at the beautiful sight of the neighborhood while sipping a cup of coffee. The thought of the past came flashing in my head like it was just yesterday. Five years have passed since the fateful night that my world came crumbling. The memories of Leo and Miriam's betrayal are still fresh in my head, but I'm not the same woman anymore. I'm now stronger and wiser. And thanks to Alex who came right on time to save me that fateful day… I would have lost my baby and even died too. Alex has been my friend since high school. We always look out for each other. I know he had a crush on me but I don’t have feelings for him nor even consider being in a relationship with him. I only had eyes for Leo,which broke his heart but still, he never left. Luckily for me that day,it was his number that I dialled before passing out. “I must get my revenge “ I murmured, biting my lower lips. “Mummy! Mummy! Look what I made” my daughter Sophia snapped me out of my thoughts. She held up her colorful drawing of a woman holding hands with a little girl. “Oh baby! Is that us?” I asked as I crouched to her level. “Yes mummy,” she nodded.” Do you like it? “I love it.” I said hugging her so tight. Her innocent smile made my scars almost insignificant.Almost. I heard a knock on my front door, which interrupted our moment. As I opened it, it was Alex. “Hey Kiara,”he said, giving me a warm smile. “So good to see you, Alex.” I pulled him into a warm hug and ushered him in. Immediately Alex entered my living room, Sophia ran to him, excitedly calling out "Uncle Alex!" Alex smiled and raised her up, spinning her in the air as her giggle filled the room. "Hey, kiddo! Missed me?” “Yes! Will you stay for dinner?” she asked excitedly. I couldn't help but smile at the sight of Alex and Sophia. Alex had always been like a father figure in her life. “Maybe later,” he replied, placing her down gently. Then faced me,”Let's talk.” "So, what's this huge job offer you were talking about over the phone?" I asked, curiosity getting the better of me. Alex smiled mischievously. "You’ve been shortlisted for Evergreen’s major project. You know they’re one of the top interior designing firms in the country. They want you to pitch for their upcoming project. ”My eyes widened in excitement. "This is huge! Evergreen designs are legendary. How did this happen?” Alex chuckled “I may have sang your praises to the right people. They saw your portfolio and were blown away. You, my friend, is an incredibly talented designer in town, so who wouldn’t want to work with you?” I blushed and smiled at the praises, feeling a sense of gratitude towards Alex. “But there’s just one more thing..you will be up against Williams & Co. & Harrison group too”. “Wait! What? Williams?” “Yes, and I heard that his company is going through some financial constraints now and it’s only Evergreen's project that will restore him back. Alex explained. “Ohhh I see, that scumbag, I will make sure that his company doesn’t get this.” I said with a sly smile. ****************************************************** I walked into the sleek conference room. My eyes scanned the room, taking in the professional atmosphere. I noticed a man standing not too far from where I was standing, he was talking to a group of people in front of him that apparently were his subordinates. Judging by his commanding presence and the deference shown to him, I guessed he must be the CEO of Evergreen company. While I was standing there observing, the man happened to glance over and caught my eye.He began to work towards me with a confident stride. “You must be Kiara right?” He said warmly, stopping in front of me. “Yes,” I replied,my voice steady. “It’s so nice to finally meet the popular interior designer in Los Angeles,” his smile wide and genuine.”You can call me Mark.” I was caught off guard by the compliment, that I felt flattered and a bit shy. I extended my hand. “It’s a pleasure to meet you too Mark.” As we shook hands, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride. Interior design was something I had always liked and dreamed of even as a child. After I finished schooling in Los Angeles, I was ready to venture and sharpen my skills. But life took an unexpected turn when I met Leo. He had come to Los Angeles for a work function, and it was love at first sight, atleast for me. He convinced me to move to London with him, assuring me of a beautiful life together. But after the divorce, I returned to Los Angeles, to start my life and career over again, with the help of my friend Alex. Lost in my thoughts, I was startled by a voice behind me. “Hello,Mark,” the voice said, polite yet unmistakably familiar. I turned around I couldn't help but notice how handsome he looked, just like always. His piercing eyes, chiseled jawline, and charming smile that once captivated me.. Immediately he saw me, he was stunned. “ Kiaria?”Kiara's POVThe doorbell rang, cutting through the calm silence of the evening. I glanced at the clock and was a bit confused because I wasn’t expecting anyone.I went over and opened the door, only to find a young man in a courier uniform holding a packaged white box."Delivery for Miss Kiara," he said, offering me a clipboard.I signed, thanked him, and closed the door.I became curious but carried the box to the living room and carefully tore it open. My brows were lifted in surprise.Inside lay an absolutely stunning dress. Midnight blue, floor-length, with a daring slit and a crystal-embellished bodice that caught the light even from the dim chandelier above. Resting on top of the gown was a small note."Wear this for tonight's party. Leo"I hissed under my breath and shook my head, a smile tugging at my lips."Funny how you suddenly want to impress me at any given chance. Something you never did when we were married," I muttered, dropping the note on the dining table.I grabb
Leo’s POVI jerked up at the sound of my phone ringing out so loudly beside me, pulling me out of my heavy, foggy sleep. My head was pounding like a drum roll and my chest was beating fast as I reached out blindly for my phone. "Hello," I spoke into the phone with a groggy voice, and wasn't able to see who the caller was."Good morning, Mr. Leo. I Just want to remind you about your 10:30 a.m. strategy session with the executive team. Since you are not here yet,I think we should reschedule it till tomorrow or should we leave it sir? "What time is it now?" I asked, trying to sit up. My head still pounding."10:00 a.m. sharp, sir."My eyes shot open. "Shit! no, no. Keep it as it is. I’ll be there in a jiffy."I ended the call and rubbed my forehead, trying to piece together what exactly happened last night. The wine. The laptop. The sudden wave of dizziness and passing out. What the hell happened?I dragged myself out of bed forcefully and staggered to the bathroom. The cold water fro
Leo’s POVShe hung up on me? Just like that?I stared at my phone and blinked. Still couldn't believe what just happened. I was still hoping that she would just call me back and tell me it was a mistake.I know she was hurted but she could have just let me explain myself. No matter how upset she plays to be, it's never going to stop me. Not when I've made a lot of moves, trying to make things right.I just sighed and closed my laptop, grabbed my car keys and phone, then stood up from my office chair. It was already late.I don't have to keep sitting here and replaying that call again and again in my head. I needed air. I needed to go home. The ride was short and smooth. As at the time I pulled into the driveway, the house lights were already on. The scent of dinner wafted faintly through the air.“Good evening, sir,” the cook greeted warmly as I stepped inside.“Evening,” I muttered. She smiled politely and added, “Dinner’s ready.”“Thanks. I’ll eat later.” My voice was flat, and I di
Kiara's POVMy phone rang immediately I reached my door, carrying two heavy bags and trying to find the right key. I picked it up without checking who the caller is. I pressed the phone between my shoulder and cheek. The moment I heard his voice, the feeling inside me just dropped."What is it, Leo?" I snapped. "Thought I warned you not to call me for anything work-related. I’m done for the day. How hard is that to understand? Or do you want—"“Calm down,” he cut in quickly. “I know you’re upset, but I didn’t call because of work or Miriam. I just... I called to check on you. To see if you got home safely.”I scoffed, rolling my eyes. "As what? Did I ask for your care?" I hissed. "You better say why you really called before I end this call."I moved the phone just a little bit, pressing it a little harder against my shoulder. I was trying to unlock my door. The force of the bags lying on my arms was much. I don't even know if Sophia's nanny had brought her home from school or if I wa
Leo’s POVI couldn't stop thinking about Kiara. Every quiet moment pulled me back to her.I decided to go to her office to atleast talk with her and probably ask her out on a date.I doubt she will agree to that.she might even slap me with her words first. But there's no harm in trying. Right? On getting to her office, her door was slightly open. She was packing up like someone that is done for the day. "Are you leaving?” I asked, stepping inside. She didn’t even bother to look at me. “Obviously. You can see it.” Ouch. “I only asked a harmless question.”“And I gave you a harmless response,” she snapped, yanking her drawer open and tossing papers into her bag without care. Her tone was cold, laced with unspoken frustration. She looked like she was going to explode the next second.“Come on, Kiara. What’s going on? You sound so bitter.”She stopped and slowly turned to me. “Why wouldn’t I be? When your dog refuses to let me breathe since I got here?”Her voice cracked slightly with rag
Kiara’s POVI’m not caught up in this drama I’m experiencing with Leo and Miriam. My main aim is to focus on my team and the project that brought me here and also proving to Evergreen Company that they didn’t make a mistake choosing me to lead their luxury workspace transformation. That’s what matters. Not this nonsense with Leo and Miriam’s daily dose of sabotage. But distractions don’t always ask for permission. After throwing out the gift Leo brought last time, I thought and hoped that it was the end of it. But no, he didn’t stop. One after another, they kept coming in. Perfumes, jewelry, even a limited-edition wristwatch he knew I used to admire back then but refused to get it for me on purpose. All this and more were delivered with fancy notes that screamed guilt and desperation.“Peace offerings,” he called them.Peace offerings, my foot.He wasn’t fooling me. I knew exactly what he wanted, to wiggle his way back into my life. But I’ve already made it clear, over and over again,
